  • The need for nutrition support teams in pediatric units: A commentary by the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition - Jpgn. - 1536-4801. ; 41:1, s. 8-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reported prevalence of malnutrition in pediatric hospitals ranges from 15% to 30% of patients, with an impact on growth, morbidity and mortality. Major deficits in nutrition care have been highlighted in European hospitals, and the implementation of nutrition support teams (NSTs) has been suggested as a means to improve malnutrition diagnosis and nutrition care for hospitalized patients. This comment by the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition reviews disease related-mechanisms causing malnutrition and consequences of malnutrition and suggests a framework for implementation of NSTs in pediatric units. The recommendations by the Committee on Nutrition include: 1) Implementation of NSTs in hospitals is recommended to improve nutritional management of sick children; 2) The main tasks of the NST should include screening for nutritional risk, identification of patients who require nutritional support, provision of adequate nutritional management, education and training of hospital staff and audit of practice; 3) The NST should be multidisciplinary, with expertise in all aspects of clinical nutrition care; 4) The funds needed to support NSTs should be raised from the health care system; and 5) Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of NSTs in prevention and management of pediatric nutritional disorders, including cost effectiveness in different settings.

  • CO2 and O-3 effects on host plant preferences of the forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 11:4, s. 588-599
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elevated levels of CO2 and O-3 affect plant growth and phytochemistry, which in turn can alter physiological performance of associated herbivores. Little is known, however, about how generalist insect herbivores respond behaviorally to CO2- and O-3-mediated changes in their host plants. This research examined the effects of elevated CO2 and O-3 levels on host plant preferences and consumption of forest tent caterpillar (FTC, Malacosoma disstria Hbn.) larvae. Dual choice feeding assays were performed with foliage from birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) and aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx., genotypes 216 and 259). Trees were grown at the Aspen Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility near Rhinelander, WI, USA, and had been exposed to ambient or elevated concentrations of CO2 and/or O-3. Levels of nutritional and secondary compounds were quantified through phytochemical analyses. The results showed that elevated O-3 levels increased FTC larval preferences for birch compared with aspen, whereas elevated CO2 levels had the opposite effect. In assays with the two aspen genotypes, addition of both CO2 and O-3 caused a shift in feeding preferences from genotype 259 to genotype 216. Consumption was unaffected by experimental treatments in assays comparing aspen and birch, but were increased for larvae given high O-3 foliage in the aspen genotype assays. Elevated levels of CO2 and O-3 altered tree phytochemistry, but did not explain shifts in feeding preferences. The results demonstrate that increased levels of CO2 and O-3 can alter insect host plant preferences both between and within tree species. Also, consequences of altered host quality (e.g., compensatory consumption) may be buffered by partial host shifts in situations when alternative plant species are available. Environmentally induced changes in host plant preferences may have the potential to alter the distribution of herbivory across plant genotypes and species, as well as competitive interactions among them.

  • The endocannabinoid system drives neural progenitor proliferation
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: FASEB Journal. - : Wiley. - 1530-6860 .- 0892-6638. ; 19:9, s. 1704-1704
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discovery of multipotent neural progenitor (NP) cells has provided strong support for the existence of neurogenesis in the adult brain. However, the signals controlling NP proliferation remain elusive. Endocannabinoids, the endogenous counterparts of marijuana-derived cannabinoids, act as neuromodulators via presynaptic CB1 receptors and also control neural cell death and survival. Here we show that progenitor cells express a functional endocannabinoid system that actively regulates cell proliferation both in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, NPs produce endocannabinoids and express the CB1 receptor and the endocannabinoid-inactivating enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase ( FAAH). CB1 receptor activation promotes cell proliferation and neurosphere generation, an action that is abrogated in CB1-deficient NPs. Accordingly, proliferation of hippocampal NPs is increased in FAAH-deficient mice. Our results demonstrate that endocannabinoids constitute a new group of signaling cues that regulate NP proliferation and thus open novel therapeutic avenues for manipulation of NP cell fate in the adult brain.

  • Skin morphology and layer identification using different STIM geometries
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X. ; 231:1-4, s. 292-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of on-axis geometry in scanning transmission ion microscopy (STIM) has been widely used for thin biological sample structure identification. In this configuration, the lateral resolution is optimised so that micron or submicron beam spots are easily achieved even for classic microbeam lines. Off-axis STIM was more particularly employed for rapid imaging, and also (when associated to a scattering set-up) for normalising elemental contents obtained by other ion beam analysis techniques in organic thin samples. Due to the very small beam current required, on-axis STIM is a stand-alone technique. Off-axis STIM can be advantageous as it enables the simultaneous utilisation of PIXE and RBS techniques. In this paper, the STIM images obtained with an on-axis geometry, a standard off-axis geometry and a recently developed on-off geometry are presented and discussed. Data from skin samples are used for comparison purposes aiming at studying skin permeability to sunscreens. Skin is a stratified tissue and the precise identification of skin layers is needed to ascertain the penetration depth of the physical filter from the formulation. In addition to the intrinsic difference in image quality due to the beam resolution, the influence of the detector type, implanted silicon detector versus Si pin diode, is discussed on the basis of their energy resolution.. their resistance to beam damage as well as the effect

  • Phosphatised olenid trilobites and associated fauna from the Upper Cambrian of Vastergotland, Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. - 0567-7920. ; 50:3, s. 429-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secondarily phosphatised olenid trilobites from organic-rich limestones (orsten) in the Furongian (Upper Cambrian) of Vastergotland, south-central Sweden, are described and illustrated. All trilobites originate from the Peltura scarabaeoides Zone and were collected on the western slope of Kinnekulle. Only the dorsal exoskeletons have become secondarily phosphatised, and the ventral appendages are not preserved. Yet the material is otherwise remarkably well preserved and reveals the morphology of the olenid trilobites in greater detail than hitherto known. Species belonging to the genera Ctenopyge, Sphaerophthalmus, Parabolina, and Peltura are identified, and several juvenile specimens are present in the material. The material is disarticulated and fragmentary, and it has only been possible to identify a few specimens to species level. In addition to chaetognaths and conodonts, the trilobites are associated with pelmatozoan columnals, a possible camaroid, and fossils of uncertain affinities. These fossils, along with a probable conulariid fragment from the Peltura minor Zone, are also described and discussed. The presence of a benthic fauna of pelmatozoans, and possible conulariids and camaroids, indicates that at least parts of the Peltura zones were deposited during dysoxic rather than anoxic periods. Moreover, the sea floor must have been firm enough to allow colonisation by sessile organisms.

  • Contribution of hip strength indices to hip fracture risk in elderly men and women
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. - 1523-4681. ; 20:10, s. 1820-1827
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this prospective, case-control study, femoral neck diameter, cross-sectional moment of inertia, or section modulus was an independent predictor of hip fracture risk after adjustment for BMD. However, the contribution of each of these indices to hip fracture prediction was modest in the presence of BMD. Introduction: The relative contribution of measures of hip strength to hip fracture prediction is unclear. This study was designed to characterize the association between hip strength indices and hip fracture risk in relation to BMD in elderly men and women. Materials and Methods: Seventy-one women and 25 men >= 60 years of age, who sustained a hip fracture during the study period of 1989-2003, were selected from the prospective, population-based Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study. These fracture cases were randomly matched for age and sex in a 1:2 ratio with non-fracture individuals. BMD at the femoral neck was measured before the fracture event by DXA (Lunar DPX-L). Hip strength indices, including femoral neck diameter (FND), cross-sectional moment of inertia (CSMI), and section modulus (Z), were estimated by reanalysis of the image files using hip strength analysis software. Results: In women, after adjustment for BMD, increased risk of hip fracture was associated with smaller FND (OR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.0, 2.7), lower CSMI (OR, 1.8; 95% Cl, 1.0, 3.2), or Z (OR, 1.6; 95% Cl, 1.1, 5.1). In men, none of these hip strength indices were significant predictors of fracture risk. However, using the results in women as a prior distribution, it was estimated that the BMD-adjusted OR for FND (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.0, 2.3), CSMI (OR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.0, 2.5), or Z (OR, 2.3; 95% Cl, 1.4,3.9) was each significantly associated with hip fracture risk in men. In the logistic regression model, BMD alone accounted for 32% and 16% of the variance of fracture liability in women and men, respectively. The addition of FND, CSMI, or Z to the model increased the respective variance proportion to 34% and 19%. Conclusions: These data suggest that smaller FND and lower CSMI or Z is an independent risk factor for hip fracture in both women and men. However, the contribution of these measures to hip fracture prediction over and above BMD is likely modest.

  • Application of standard addition methodology for the determination of banned azo dyes in different leather types
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Analytica Chimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-4324 .- 0003-2670. ; 552:1-2, s. 76-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An analytical procedure based on microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and standard addition was applied for the determination of banned azo dyes in bovine, sheep, and goat leather. Standard addition at four different concentration levels was performed using azo dyes, dissolved either in methanol or water. All dyes were determined indirectly by measuring their corresponding harmful aromatic amines, formed after reduction by use of sodium dithionite. Comparing found amounts of amines with theoretical target values allowed an assessment of accuracy. The recoveries were also compared with those obtained for non-spiked samples using external standard calibration. The standard addition approaches provided much better accuracy than external standard calibration, with recoveries close to 100% for most amines. Since there was no great difference in recoveries when using methanol or water as solvent, preparation of the dyes in methanol might be preferred because of the faster evaporation of the solvent after spiking.
