  • Robust harmonic detection, classification and compensation method for electric drives based on the sparse FFT and the Mahalanobis distance
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IET Electric Power Applications. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology. - 1751-8660 .- 1751-8679. ; 11:7, s. 1177-1186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents a method for the robust detection, classification and possible compensation of harmonics in electric drives during real-time operation, with the aim of providing a framework for monitoring and diagnostic without the need of additional hardware. The detection is performed with a sparse fast Fourier transform algorithm, for its lower computational effort when the signals are sparse (which, by definition, contain few meaningful spectral lines). The classification is performed on the results of the signal frequency analysis by means of the Mahalanobis distance concept, improving the robustness and noise rejection properties of the method. The compensation part relies on a family of regulators in parallel, each operating in the rotating reference frame of the harmonic to be cancelled. The theoretical background is followed by a discussion on the implementation and the interaction of the three blocks for a successful real-time operation. The system was tested in laboratory and proved to fulfil the requirements, by running in parallel to a vector control for synchronous machines. It was also found that the method is a useful tool to determine the presence of unknown harmonics in an electric drive system, thus potentially providing early warnings of unexpected failures.

  • Participatory budgeting as a form of dialogic accounting in Russia : actors' institutional work and reflexivity trap
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0951-3574. ; 31:4, s. 1098-1123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how participatory budgeting (PB), as a form of dialogic accounting, is produced in practice. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative case study of PB development for the period 2013-2016 in one Russian municipality. Based on triangulation of in-depth semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis, videotape data and netnographic observation, the authors employ ideas of dialogic accounting and institutional work. Findings The study shows that the PB experiment, which began with dialogic rhetoric, in reality, had very limited dialogic effects. However, the authors also observed that the PB dynamics over time made the practice neither inherently monologic nor dialogic. The authors explained such transformations by the way in which the individual reflexivity of actors altered when carrying out institutional work. Curiosity reflexivity was the most essential, triggering different patterns of institutional work to set up the PB experiment. However, further, the authors demonstrated that, over the course of the experiment's development, the institutional work was trapped by various actors' individual reflexivity forms and in this way limited PB's dialogic potential. Originality/value The study shows the importance of understanding and managing individuals' reflexivity, as it shapes the institutional work performed by different actors and, therefore, influences the direction of both the design and materialization of dialogic accounting experiments such as PB. In a broader sense, this also influences the way in which democratic governance is developed, losing democratization potential.

  • Innovation as counter-infrastructure: How Singapore news startups innovate their news practices amid a tightening media regulatory infrastructure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Panel presentation at the 72nd International Communication Association Conference (May 26-30), Paris, France..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amid the tightening media restrictions in Singapore, this presentation discusses the innovation practices of Singapore’s independent news startups that challenge the status quo and contribute to the development of a counter-infrastructure that resists the country’s regulatory infrastructure. Contrary to common perceptions of direct censorship and repression of journalists, Singapore’s regulatory strictures instead indirectly curtails the growth of news startups by restricting funding sources, and influencing market principles that affect reputation management. In response, news startups have innovated their funding models, technology use, and reportage that differentiate them from the mainstream media. Drawing on the approaches of three news startups, this presentation examines how their innovations, both editorially and in seeking funding, give rise to infrastructural tensions and the development of a counter-infrastructure. Consequently, we assess the implications that these news startups and their innovations have on the country’s media environment, focusing on social justice issues, journalistic independence, and media plurality.

  • Exploring Hydrogenation and Fluorination in Curved 2D Carbon Systems : A Density Functional Theory Study on Corannulene
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry A. - : American Chemical Society. - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 116:36, s. 9080-9087
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corannulene has been a useful prototype for studying C-based nanostructures as well as surface chemistry and reactivity of sp(2)-hybridized carbon-based materials. We have investigated fluorination and hydrogenation of corannulene carrying out density functional theory calculations. In general, the fluorination is energetically more favorable than hydrogenation of corannulene. The substitution of the peripheral H atoms in the corannulene molecule by F atoms leads to a larger cohesive energy gain than when F (or H) atoms are bonded to the hub carbon and bridge carbon sites of this molecule. As expected for doped C-based nanostructures, the hydrogenation or fluorination significantly changes the HOMO-LUMO gap of the system. We have obtained HOMO-LUMO gap variations of 0.13-3.46 eV for F-doped and 0.38-1.52 eV for H-doped systems. These variations strongly depend on the concentration and position of the incorporated F/H atoms, instead of the structural stability of the doped systems. Considering these calculations, we avoid practical difficulties associated with the addition/substitution reactions of larger curved two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanostructures, and we obtain a comprehensive and systematic understanding of a variety of F/H 2D doped systems.

  • Laughable borders: Delegitimizing migration control regimes through humor
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: De/Legitimizing Global Migration Control, 28-29 October 2021, University of Amsterdam.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As scholars of migration politics, we often find ourselves in the position of trying to make sense of the senseless. The field we study is riddled with violence, absurdity and theatrics, which often form the very building blocks for migration control regimes across the globe. While we have produced ample as well as solid evidence of both the futility and cruelty of such regimes, the following paper seeks to take a less trodden path: exploring what happens when we laugh at the seriously perverted ways in which peoples’ mobility is governed. The idea of staging violence and oppression within the realm of ridicule is of course not a new one. To the contrary, studies across academic disciplines have long argued that humor holds a particular potentiality when it comes to challenging hegemonic discourses of subjugation. Somewhat surprisingly, however, migration scholarship has rarely engaged with the humorous as a methodological or analytical lens. The notion of laughable borders that I am here proposing is therefore intended to do several things. First, it seeks to make the empirical point that borders are laughed at by those that seek to cross them under adverse conditions. Second, such laughter can do powerful political work to delegitimize migration control regimes –disrupting the very rationalities that underpin the regime itself and thus exposing its arbitrary and perishable nature.

  • Wound contamination in cardiac surgery
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: APMIS : acta pathologica, microbiologica, et immunologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0463. ; 115:9, s. 1001-1007
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To investigate the degree of bacterial contamination in the sternal wound during cardiac surgery and the sternal skin flora after operation in order to increase our understanding of the pathogenesis of sternal wound infections. Design: Prospective study where cultures were taken peri- and postoperatively from sternal wounds and skin. Setting: University Hospital. Patients: 201 cardiac surgery patients. Results: 89% of the patients grew bacteria from the subcutaneous sternal tissue. 98% of the patients showed bacterial growth on the surrounding skin at the end of the operation. We found both commensal and nosocomial bacteria in the sternal wound. These bacteria had different temporal distribution patterns. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) and Propionibacterium acnes (PA) were by far the most prevalent bacteria during and after the operation. Furthermore, 41% of patients had more than 10 000 CFU/pad CoNS on the skin. There was no correlation between length of operation and number of bacteria. Men displayed higher bacterial counts than women on the skin. Conclusion: Skin preparation with ethanol/chlorhexidine is unable to suppress the physiological skin flora for the duration of a heart operation. A decrease of CoNS and PA postoperatively can be caused by competitive recolonisation of commensal and nosocomial bacteria.
