  • With that diet, you will go far : trait-based analysis reveals a link between rapid range expansion and a nitrogen-favoured diet
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8452 .- 1471-2954. ; 280:1750, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent global change has had a substantial influence on the distribution of organisms, and many species are currently expanding their ranges. To evaluate the underlying processes, long-term data with good geographic resolution are essential. One important but generally overlooked data source is offered by the taxon-specific national catalogues of first provincial records that are kept in many countries. Here, we use such data to quantify trait-based influences on range expansion in Swedish butterflies and moths between 1973 and 2010. Of 282 species meeting pre-defined quality criteria, 170 expanded their northern range margin, with a mean expansion rate of 2.7 km per year. The analyses demonstrate that habitat and diet generalists, forest species and species active during warm conditions have expanded their ranges more rapidly than other species. Notably, range expansion in diet specialists was positively related to a nitrogen-favoured larval diet, an effect not found among oligo- or polyphagous species. In contrast to the general view, this shows that specialist species can undergo rapid range expansion. We suggest that increased areas of nitrogen-rich habitat, and increased availability of a nitrogen-favoured diet, are among the most important drivers of range expansions, potentially having far-reaching consequences for a wide variety of organisms.

  • Future-oriented people show stronger moral concerns
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Current Research in Social Psychology. - 1088-7423. ; 19, s. 52-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown that moral concerns weigh more heavily when people areexperimentally induced to think about the distant vs. near future. The current researchdemonstrates that this also applies to people whose thinking is intrinsically and generallyoriented toward the future rather than the present. More specifically, we show that people with afuture time perspective are more condemning of others who transgress ethical rules and that theyare more committed to follow ethical rules themselves. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

  • Pattern-finding in qualitative data : a 17 steps procedure of making data analyzable

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • I have examined or tutored some 500 bachelors theses and some 100 masters theses at several Swedish universities.Over the past 20 years Swedish secondary school graduates has become less and less apt in mathematics, Mullis, et al. (2009). Due to this development university students mostly chose to make qualitative studies, irrespective if this is the best choice to study the research question on not. Most of them don’t even make good qualitative studies. After analysis of the requirements of what is needed, Prahalad’s (2006) ‘sandbox of innovation’, I have developed an abductive method for analysing qualitative data to help the students to get good use of their empirical material, a well-grounded theory, in contrast to the inherent deductive nature of grounded theory. It is suitable for studies based on interviews, focus groups and observations. As the dataset grows, the method becomes cumbersome, which I don not consider is a big problem, as big qualitative datasets would preferably be analysed by non-parametric statistics, rather than the iterative interpreting qualitative method I suggest here. The method has so far been used to advantage by students in some 15 bachelor and master theses. I also discuss the limitations of the method.
