  • VCSEL Wavelength Setting by Intra-Cavity Phase Tuning - Numerical Analysis and Experimental Verification

    • Monolithic multi-wavelength VCSEL arrays, with wavelengths of individual VCSELs precisely set in a post-epitaxial growth process, would enable compact multi-color light sources and transmitters for various sensing and datacom applications. Here we report on a numerical study of the requirements of spectral matching and balancing of DBR reflectances, optical confinement factor, and optical gain for uniformity of threshold current and slope efficiency over wavelength with wavelength set by intra-cavity phase tuning. The requirements are verified by an experimental demonstration of intra-cavity phase tuned VCSELs in the spectral range 1043-1067 nm with a wavelength spacing of 8 ± 1 nm enabled by precise Ar ion-beam etching. Small variations of threshold current and slope efficiency are achieved by close to ideal spectral matching and balancing. The VCSELs are GaAs-based with a dielectric SiO2/TiO2 top-DBR. We conclude that high uniformity of threshold current and slope efficiency is demanding in terms of spectral matching and balancing and requires not only very precise etching for intra-cavity phase tuning and precise thickness of the layers in the dielectric top-DBR, but also precise thickness and composition of the layers in the epitaxial semiconductor part.

  • High-angle deflection of metagrating-integrated laser emission for high-contrast microscopy

    • Flat metaoptics components are looking to replace classical optics elements and could lead to extremely compact biophotonics devices if integrated with on-chip light sources and detectors. However, using metasurfaces to shape light into wide angular range wavefronts with high efficiency, as is typically required in high-contrast microscopy applications, remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate curved GaAs metagratings integrated on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) that enable on-chip illumination in total internal reflection and dark field microscopy. Based on an unconventional design that circumvents the aspect ratio dependent etching problems in monolithic integration, we demonstrate off-axis emission centred at 60(degrees) in air and 63(degrees) in glass with > 90% and > 70% relative deflection efficiency, respectively. The resulting laser beam is collimated out-of-plane but maintains Gaussian divergence in-plane, resulting in a long and narrow illumination area. We show that metagrating-integrated VCSELs of different kinds can be combined to enable rapid switching between dark-field and total internal reflection illumination. Our approach provides a versatile illumination solution for high-contrast imaging that is compatible with conventional microscopy setups and can be integrated with biophotonics devices, such as portable microscopy, NIR-II range bioimaging, and lab-on-a-chip devices.

  • Effects of Detuning on Wide-Temperature Behavior of 25 Gbaud 850 nm VCSELs

    • Emerging markets for optical interconnects with VCSEL-based transceivers require VCSELs with superior wide temperature performance. One of the prime parameters controlling the temperature dependence of VCSEL performance is wavelength detuning. We study the impact of detuning on the performance of 25 Gbaud class 850 nm VCSELs over a temperature range of -40 to 125°C, as applicable to e.g. automotive optical networking. Two VCSELs with different detuning, but otherwise identical, are compared. Basic static and dynamic performance parameters and their temperature dependencies are extracted. The results show that with appropriate detuning, sufficient performance at the temperature extremes and improved tolerance to temperature variations can be achieved. Excessive detuning to meet the more challenging high temperature performance requirements leads to insufficient low temperature performance.

    • Multicore fiber enables a parallel optic data link with a single optical fiber, thus providing an attractive way to increase the total throughput and the integration density of the interconnections. We study and present photonics integration technologies and optical coupling approaches for multicore transmitter and receiver subassemblies. Such optical engines are implemented and characterized using multimode 6-core fibers and multicore-optimized active devices: 850-nm VCSEL and PD arrays with circular layout and multi-channel driver and receiver ICs. This optical link uses custom transmitter and receiver ICs with 2-tap Feed Forward Equalization implemented in 130nm BiCMOS and GaAs based VCSELs and photodiodes. This paper covers new aspects of the circuits and packaging.
