  • Habitus Adaptation and First-Generation University Students' Adjustment to Higher Education: A Life Course Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociology of Education. - : SAGE Publications. - 0038-0407 .- 1939-8573. ; 94:3, s. 191-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, research has brought attention to the heterogeneity of resources that first-generation students bring with them to higher education and the factors that assist in these students' social and academic adjustment to university life. However, few studies have focused on how these students' early socialization and experiences over the life course influence their adjustment experiences to university. Drawing on Bourdieu's habitus concept to explore the life histories of first-generation students at a midranked Swedish university, we identify three types of adjustment profiles-Adjusters, Strangers, and Outsiders-and highlight five key factors over the life course that explain why they differ: family resources, early social environment, educational experiences and opportunities, peers, and partners. Our findings suggest that class-related adjustment challenges in college can be traced to different levels of cultural capital acquired during first-generation students' early socialization but also to capital acquired through sustained contact with cultural capital-abundant social environments throughout their life course, resulting in subtle but consequential habitus adaptations. This study extends previous research in the field by exploring a broader set of social contexts that can spur first-generation students' cultural capital acquisition before college and facilitate their adjustment to higher education.

  • After a Cycle of Contention: Post-Gothenburg Strategies of Left-Libertarian Activists in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social Movement Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1474-2837 .- 1474-2829. ; 14:6, s. 713-732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article considers the strategic choices that radical activists face when a cycle of contention ends. It investigates the reorientation of the autonomous anarchists or left-libertarian activist milieu in Sweden after the riots at the Gothenburg summit in 2001, which ended a cycle of anti-globalization protests in Sweden. The article identifies five strategies by which this activist milieu attempted to reconstruct collective agency, build a new alliance structure, and renew the repertoire of contention: (1) rescaling and targeting of micro-politics; (2) moving from secluded to open communities; (3) rethinking collective agency with the help of a new movement theory; (4) reversing dominant discourses and opening up discursive space; and (5) redefining militancy and shelving of violent confrontation. The study builds on activist interviews and ethnographic research in Stockholm and Malmo.

  • Mobilizing Grassroots in the City : Lessons for Civil Society Research in Central and Eastern Europe
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society. - : Springer. - 0891-4486 .- 1573-3416. ; 33:2, s. 125-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What can we learn about civil society in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Russia from studies on activism within the region’s urban spaces? In this article, we argue that studying urban activism in CEE offers useful insights for general theory building about the importance of uneventful protests, the formation of agency and the processes of becoming active in the public sphere (conceptualized here as “political becoming”), and the enabling role of informality in collective action in adverse contexts. By contributing to our understanding in this way, these insights help to advance relational and process-based conceptions of civil society.

  • When media gets wise: Collaborative filtering with mobile media agents
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces, Proceedings IUI. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 1595932879
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a model where media (e.g. music files) are autonomous entities that carry their own individual information. Our goal is to turn such files into autonomous, rule-following agents capable of building their own identities from interactions with other agents and users, We are exploring how collaborative filtering-like behaviour could emerge out of large ensembles of interacting agents, which are distributed over mobile devices in social networks. We have implemented a first version of the model in the form of a music player application for mobile devices, called Push!Music. This system takes advantage of active recommendations as well as implicit user activity to build a profile for each media file.

  • Population genetic structure and connectivity of the seagrass Thalassia hemprichii in the Western Indian Ocean is influenced by predominant ocean currents
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 9:16, s. 8953-8964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is the first large-scale genetic population study of a widespread climax species of seagrass, Thalassia hemprichii, in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The aim was to understand genetic population structure and connectivity of T. hemprichii in relation to hydrodynamic features. We genotyped 205 individual seagrass shoots from 11 sites across the WIO, spanning over a distance of similar to 2,700 km, with twelve microsatellite markers. Seagrass shoots were sampled in Kenya, Tanzania (mainland and Zanzibar), Mozambique, and Madagascar: 4-26 degrees S and 33-48 degrees E. We assessed clonality and visualized genetic diversity and genetic population differentiation. We used Bayesian clustering approaches (TESS) to trace spatial ancestry of populations and used directional migration rates (DivMigrate) to identify sources of gene flow. We identified four genetically differentiated groups: (a) samples from the Zanzibar channel; (b) Mozambique; (c) Madagascar; and (d) the east coast of Zanzibar and Kenya. Significant pairwise population genetic differentiation was found among many sites. Isolation by distance was detected for the estimated magnitude of divergence (D-EST), but the three predominant ocean current systems (i.e., East African Coastal Current, North East Madagascar Current, and the South Equatorial Current) also determine genetic connectivity and genetic structure. Directional migration rates indicate that Madagascar acts as an important source population. Overall, clonality was moderate to high with large differences among sampling sites, indicating relatively low, but spatially variable sexual reproduction rates. The strongest genetic break was identified for three sites in the Zanzibar channel. Although isolation by distance is present, this study suggests that the three regionally predominant ocean current systems (i.e., East African Coastal Current, North East Madagascar Current, and the South Equatorial Current) rather than distance determine genetic connectivity and structure of T. hemprichii in the WIO. If the goal is to maintain genetic connectivity of T. hemprichii within the WIO, conservation planning and implementation of marine protection should be considered at the regional scale-across national borders.
