  • Social Media Supporting Democratic Dialogue
  • 2013
  • In: Ambiguous Technologies. - Lisbon : Autónoma University. ; , s. 36-43
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The term of “social media” appears in newspapers and magazines everyday and the huge number of people use social media actively in daily life. Nowadays, in the highly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developed country Japan, Japanese people enroll in social media and evolve a new way of communicating with others based on the “virtual” social distance between them. Among social media, Twitter has been focusing on its strong power as the tool for political change recent years. While Twitter has of-expressed problems as well as the “traditional” social media, it is characterized by the limited number of characters, strong propagation and optional reciprocity. Those characteristics stimulate people’s communication online and bring about opportunities for social interaction and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, in the deluge of information, we need to nurture skills to utilize critical and rational way of thinking through dialogue not only between others also between themselves internally. This study explores characteristics of social media and differences between “traditional” social media and Twitter, and how the difference affects people’s information behavior in Japan.

  • Deliberation or Updating? : The Case of Southern Stockholm Activists Online
  • 2012
  • In: Proceedings of the 12th European Conference on eGovernment. - Reading : ACI Academic Conferences International. - 9781908272416 - 9781908272423 ; , s. 691-697
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Based on a (n)ethnographic inspired study of middle class activists in southern Stockholm, the aim is to understand contemporary political action and to discuss changing practices of participation in digital and late modernity. More specifically this paper addresses the Internet and its promise of deliberation. However instead of echoing techno-deterministic and optimist accounts of the Internet and online social networking affording a digital public sphere where deliberation can flourish, this paper argues that it is more accurate to understand the practices among the activists in southern Stockholm as updating. Updating is described here as a two-way practice,to be updated what is happening in your social networks as well as updating your social networks what is happening. These practices of updating are understood in light of late modern theories of reflexivity, identity negotiation and maintenance, practices that arguably are heightened in digital and networked societies. Hence to avoid determinism without resorting to the idea of technology as neutral, the paper is based in atechno-social dialectical understanding of our time as digital late modernity. The paper will end with a brief discussion of the implications of updating on political participation in digital late modernity. Even though not deliberation, practices of updating has consequences for participation and political action that perhaps could be considered positive and encouraging for democratic tradition in general.

  • PR practitioners work during organizational change: Implications for employee engagement and empowerment?
  • 2012
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Contemporary organizations continue to face the long-standing trend in which they are being transformed from hierarchical to decentralized organizations. This period is often referred to as the "age of empowerment". Organizations attempt to find ways to empower their employees and to encourage them to become more engaged in their work. Communication in various forms may therefore get a more prominent role in organizations. A comparative case study of organizational changes in three business organizations provides an analysis of the work of PR practitioners. To what extent and if so, how, do PR practitioners adjust and adapt their work to this “age of empowerment” phenomenon? The data reveal that although PR practitioners in all three organizations were involved in communication about respective change it was only PR practitioners in one of the organizations that worked actively and strategically to both engage employees in the present change process and to empower them.

  • The Communicative Constitution of an IT-Unit in an Organization Applying Enterprise Architecture (EA)
  • 2011
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • All embracing Internet Technology (IT) provides opportunities for contemporary organizations but it also presents a number of organizational challenges. For one thing, the rapid IT development have caused or forced individual organizational units to develop their own IT solutions, often resulting in a remarkable number of different solutions in one single organization. Today, this is seldom regarded as being efficient and management often works to consolidate IT. Such work requires that the IT unit’s co-workers are familiar with all the IT solutions currently present in the organization. Another challenge is that there often is a discrepancy between the provided IT solution and the need of the end user. To avoid this entails that the IT co-workers are well aware of the business needs. Various models and methods have been applied to deal with these challenges. Forming the IT unit in a matrix organization is one attempt. Enterprise Architecture (EA), with the main purpose of providing a holistic view of the organization, is another attempt which often embraces the matrix structure. The focus in this paper is to explore how an IT unit, working according to these premises, is being communicatively constituted. The analysis rests on McPhee and Zaug’s (2000) four-flows framework. Considering the prevailing conditions for the IT unit, activity coordination appears to be the most important flow in the constitution of the IT unit, which would premiere Taylor’s (2009) view of the four-flows framework. However, the results from our case study indicate that that the interdependence of the four communications flows is indispensible in order to communicatively constitute the IT unit.

  • What Became of the New Public Diplomacy? : Recent Developments in British, US and Swedish Public Diplomacy Policy and Evaluation Methods
  • 2012
  • In: The Hague Journal of Diplomacy. - 1871-1901 .- 1871-191X. ; 7:3, s. 313-336
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article examines the relationship between theories of the ‘new’ public diplomacy and recent attempts by foreign ministries in the United Kingdom, United States and Sweden to develop public diplomacy strategies for the early twenty-first century. It provides a summary of policy debates in each nation alongside analysis of the evaluation methods that have been designed to support them. The article argues that expressions of a new public diplomacy are best explained within the constraints of different institutional and national cultures. Innovations in public diplomacy have typically taken place within the context of domestic demands for public accountability and value for money, pressures for empirical data to inform policy-making, and the increased centralization of public diplomacy activities. Evaluation plays an important role in improving actors’ capacities for newer forms of public diplomacy, but often by measuring the public diplomacy institution and its objectives, rather than whether the needs of foreign publics are met. This suggests that any paradigm shift from old to new public diplomacy has in practice centred on domestic and organizational concerns rather than the achievement of normative goals such as increased dialogue with foreign citizens.

  • The representation of third country nationals in european news discourse : journalistic perceptions and practices
  • 2013
  • In: Journalism Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1751-2786 .- 1751-2794. ; 7:3, s. 248-265
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Based on semi-structured interviews with journalists in six European countries, this article examines the extent to which the findings of recent literature about the representation of migrants in European media content are reflected in the perceptions of journalists themselves about the way in which migrants are represented in the media discourses produced by their outlets. It finds that the four key findings of the literature were by and large confirmed, namely inaccurate group labelling and designation, negative or victimised representation, underrepresentation of migrants in quotations, and the scarce reference to a wider European context. Finally, the article discusses media professionals’ self-reported awareness about general professional ethics versus diversity-specific ethics, and about the way in which their outlets cover news involving ‘‘new’’ immigrants, i.e. nationals of non-European Union countries residing in the European Union, and examines the differences between media practices and perceptions in ‘‘old’’ and ‘‘new’’ immigration countries. For a full explanation of the methodology of the research project, please see the introduction in this themed section: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17512786.2012.740213.
