Skirting the Subject : Pursuing Language in the Works of Adrienne Rich, Susan Griffin, and Beverly Dahlen

- In this study I delve into the strategic certainty and theoretical quandary that characterize both the practice and the assessment of “women’s language.” My contention is that “women’s language” is a composite of hypothetical speculations, political intentions, interpretive practices, and ethical convictions. Consequently, the validity of “women’s language” is dependent on an economy of belief and consensus rather than on fixed linguistic features or absolute stylistic distinctions. Proceeding from this premise, I draw attention to what might be called the compositional legibility of “women’s language.” To illustrate this point, I examine the critical assumptions and textual initiatives of three feminist poets: Adrienne Rich, Susan Griffin, and Beverly Dahlen. Taken together they cover a wide range of aesthetic departures and travel various textual routes. All three persistently focus on the codes and structures of language from a feminist perspective. What they have in common is a desire to revitalize language and thus invoke new positions for female identity. Although their discursive strategies overlap and intertwine, I accent documentation, dramatization, and invention as the characteristic writing modes of Rich’s, Griffin’s, and Dahlen’s work respectively. These distinctions are relevant when considering the means by which Rich, Griffin, and Dahlen conceive woman as a subject of changing significance and they are beneficial when examining the degree to which change is actualized in their language revisions. The differences between their writing strategies signal important variance within feminist thinking. Thus, in the final section of my study, I attempt to relate the diverse modes of “women’s language” to the contingencies of conscious and unconscious factors which elicit change.

Stretchability of the rectus femoris muscle: investigation of validity and intratester reliability of two methods including x-ray analysis of pelvic tilt.

- Validity and intratester reliability of two test methods designed to identify stretchability of the rectus femoris muscle (RFM) was investigated, combined with x-ray analysis of pelvic tilt in the sagittal plane. The first method is commonly used in clinical practice. The second is a new technique supposed to tilt the pelvis posteriorly and thus further separate the origin and insertion of the muscle. Investigation of validity and intratester reliability of the two methods was made by testing and retesting a random sample of 71 persons. The tests were performed with an equipment that automatically recorded the angle of knee flexion from a previously determined applied torque, indicating the end point of motion for that particular subject. Angle of knee flexion and subjective estimation of pain sensation due to stretch were recorded at each measurement. The pelvic tilt-analysis consisted of test-retest reliability of x-ray measurements, comparison between the methods in both starting and final position, and x-ray and electronic goniometer measurements. All applied torques were measured with a strain gauge. Two out of three criteria of validity favored the new method and the third pointed out the two methods as equal. The two methods as well as the x-ray measurements showed high reliability, and the hypothesis of a more posterior tilted pelvis in the new method was confirmed. The electronic goniometer was less sensitive than x-ray, but proposed to analyse pelvic tilt clinically. Methodology procedures for joint angle measurements are discussed.

- I fokus för detta arbete står friskvård inom arbetslivet som pedagogisk praktik med hälsoprofilsbedömning, en metod för undersökning och påverkan av människors hälsostatus och hälsovanor, som konkret exempel. En bakgrund till detta är framväxten av insatser för folkhälsa och den ökade betoning av friskvård inom arbetslivet som skett inom såväl privat som offentlig sektor. Friskvård handlar om människors levnadsvanor när det gäller kost, motion, stress, alkohol, tobak m.m.Hälsoprofilsbedömning och friskvårdspedagogik inom arbetslivet ses här ur två olika perspektiv. Ur det ena perspektivet behandlas verksamheten på dess egna villkor - som en metod att inom ramen för arbetslivet få till stånd ner hälsosamma livsstilar genom kontrakt mellan självständiga parter. Det andra perspektivet kan ses som kritiskt granskande. Här ifrågasätts premissema för hälsoprofilsbedömningen utifrån begrepp som makt och disciplinering. En inspirationskälla har därvid bland annat Michel Foucaults arbeten varit. Som empiriskt material för analysen används två avhandlingar som presenterar hälsoprofilbedömningen som metod.Ur dessa båda perspektiv erhålles två olika betraktelser om hälsoprofilsbedömning och friskvårdspedagogik inom arbetslivet - en rättvis och en orättvis. På basis av en kritisk pragmatisk ansats diskuteras möjligheten till ett samtal baserad på relationen mellan de båda betrakelserna.
