Search for an LSP gluino at LEP with the DELPHI detector

- In some supersymmetric models, the gluino ((g) over tilde) is predicted to be light and stable. In that case, it would hadronize to form R-hadrons. In these models, the missing energy signature of the lightest supersymmetric particle is no longer valid, even if R-parity is conserved. Therefore, such a gluino is not constrained by hadron collider results, which looked for the decay (g) over tilde --> q (q) over bar(χ) over tilde (0)(1). Data collected by the DELPHI detector in 1994 at 91.2 GeV have been analysed to search for q (q) over bar(gg) over tilde events. No deviation from Standard Model predictions is observed and a gluino mass between 2 and 18 GeV/c(2) is excluded at the 95% confidence level in these models. Then, R-hadrons produced in the squark decays were searched for in the data collected by DELPHI at the centre-of-mass energies of 189 to 208 GeV, corresponding to an overall integrated luminosity of 609 pb(-1). The observed number of events is in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived on the squark masses from the excluded regions in the plane (m((q) over tilde1),m((g) over bar)): m((t) over tilde1) > 90 GeV/c(2) and m((b) over tilde1) > 96 GeV/c(2) for purely left squarks. m((t) over tilde1) > 87 GeV/c(2) and m((b) over tilde1) > 82 GeV/c(2) independent of the mixing angle.

- Neutral B meson oscillations in the B-s(0) - <(B-s(0))over bar>, and B-d(0) - <(B-d(0))over bar> systems were studied using a sample of about 4.0 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the DELPHI detector between 1992 and 2000. Events with a high transverse momentum lepton were removed and a sample of 770 k events with an inclusively reconstructed vertex was selected. The mass difference between the two physical states in the B-d(0) - <(B-d(0))over bar>system was measured to be: Deltam(d) = (0.531 +/- 0.025(stat.) +/- 0.007(syst.))ps(-1). The following limit on the width difference of these states was also obtained: DeltaGamma(Bd)/Gamma(Bd) < 0.18 at 95% CL. As no evidence for B-s(0) -<(B-s(0))over bar> oscillations was found, a limit on the mass difference of the two physical states was given:, Deltam(s) > 5.0 ps(-1) at 95% CL. The corresponding sensitivity of this analysis is equal to 6.6 ps(-1).

- Oscillations in the B-s(0)- <(B-s(0))over bar> system were studied in events selected from about 4.3 million hadronic Z(0) decays registered by DELPHI between 1992 and 2000. This paper presents updates of two published analyses ([11, 12]). The first analysis, which utilizes leptons emitted with large momentum transverse to a jet, was improved by means of a better algorithm for the vertex reconstuction and a new algorithm for flavour-tagging at production time. The second analysis, which utilizes D-s-lepton events, was improved by optimizing the treatment of proper time resolution. No signal of B-s(0) oscillations was observed and limits on the mass difference between the physical B-s(0) states were obtained to be: Deltam(s)>8.0 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)= 9.1 ps(-1) in the high p(t) lepton analysis and Deltam(s)>4.9 ps(-1) at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)=8.6 ps(-1) in the D-s-lepton analysis. Previously published results on these analyses are superseded. The combination of these results with those obtained in other independent analyses previously performed in DELPHI (D-s-hadron, exclusive B-s(0), inclusive vertex) gives: Deltam(s)>8.5 ps(-1) at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)=12.0 ps(-1).

- A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons was performed in the high energy data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP II at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 202 GeV. The three different final states, taunutaunu, c (s) over bar(c) over bars and c (s) over bar taunu were considered. New methods were applied to reject wrong hadronic jet pairings and for the tau identification, where a discriminator based on tau polarisation and polar angles was used. No excess of data compared to the expected Standard Model processes was observed and the existence of a charged Higgs boson with mass lower than 71.5 GeV/c(2) is excluded at the 95% confidence level. - The pseudoscalar meson eta(b) has been searched for in two-photon interactions at LEP II. The data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 617 pb(-1) at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 161 to 209 GeV. Upper limits at a confidence level of 95% on the product Gamma(gamma gamma) (eta(b)) x BR(eta(b)) are 190, 470 and 660 eV/c(2) for the eta(b) decaying into 4, 6 and 8 charged particles, respectively.

- A search for excited lepton production in e(+)e(-) collisions was performed using the data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 GeV to 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb(-1). No evidence for excited lepton production was found. In searches for pair-produced excited leptons, lower mass limits were established in the range 94-103 GeV/c(2), depending on the channel and model assumptions. In searches for singly-produced excited leptons, upper limits on the parameter f/Lambda were established as a function of the mass.

- Higgs boson production with subsequent decay to photons was searched for in the data collected by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of nearly 650 pb(-1). No evidence for a signal was found, and limits were set on h(0)Z(0) and h(0)A(0) production with h(0) decay to photons. These results were used to exclude regions in the parameter space of fermiophobic scenarios of Two Higgs Doublet Models.

- The quark model does not exclude states composed of more than three quarks, like pentaquark systems. Controversial evidence for such states has been published in the last years, in particular: for a strange pentaquark Theta(1540)(+); for a double-strange state, the Xi(1862)(--), subsequently called Phi(1860)--; and for a charmed state, the Theta(c)(3100)(0). If confirmed, a full pentaquark family might exist; such pentaquark states could be produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations near the Z energy. In this Letter a search for pentaquarks is described using the DELPHI detector at LEP, characterized by powerful particle identification sub-systems crucial in the separation of the signal from the background for these states. At 95% CL, upper limits are set on the production rates N of such particles and their charge-conjugate state per Z decay: N-Theta+ x Br(Theta(+) -> pK(S)(0)) < 5.1 x 10(-4), N Theta++ < 1.6 x 10(-3), N Phi(1860)-- x Br((P(1860)-- -> Xi(-)pi(-)) < 2.9 x 10(-4), N-Theta c(3100)0 x Br(Theta(c)(3100)(0) -> D*(+)p) < 8.8 x 10(-4).
