  • Fossils of early vertebrates and the evolution of the gnathostome face revealed by Synchrotron imaging

    • Cyclostomes and gnathostomes have distinct face patterns. Cyclostomes possess a median nasohypophysial duct, an anterior hypophysis and a short telencephalon, contra gnathostomes possessing a pair of nasal sacs opening externally, a separate posterior hypophysis opening onto the palate and a long telencephalon. Embryonic development also differs. In cyclostomes, premandibular crest cells migrate forwards either side of the nasohypophysial placode, forming an upper lip; in gnathostomes they migrate between the hypophysial and nasal placodes forming the trabecular region. Supraoptic neural crest remains posterior to the nasohypophysial duct in cyclostomes but moves forward to create the nasal capsules in gnathostomes. Fossil stem gnathostomes illustrate a transitional sequence between these two patterns: 1) The galeaspid Shuyu (jawless stem gnathostome): nasohypophysial duct, short telencephalon, and anteriorly oriented hypophysis as in a cyclostome, but paired nasal sacs and hypophysis separated by a rudimentary trabecula. 2) The primitive placoderm Romundina (jawed stem gnathostome): short telencephalon, anteriorly directed hypophysis, trabecular region long and wide, nasal capsule located far behind the tip of the snout but just in front of the orbits. These features are interpreted as uniquely primitive among gnathostomes. The trabeculae of Romundina form an extensive precerebral region resembling the upper lip of extant cyclostomes and Shuyu. The position of the nasal capsule suggests that the supraoptic crest had not migrated forwards. 3) The arthrodire Kujdanowiapsis (a more derived placoderm): short telencephalon and vertically oriented hypophysis. The trabecula has been shortened anteriorly, making the nasal capsule terminal. These positional relationships are maintained in crown gnathostomes.

  • An Analytic Approach toward Risks of the Process of Recent Architectural Competitions in Iran

    • Not similar to management discipline, it is really hard to recognize a body of official knowledge and science which deals with the fundamental issues and challenges confronted the architectural design; in spite of the lack of general methodic attitude, the essential forces influencing the architectural design process established guidelines and outline plan of works such as RIBA Outline Plan of Work (Royal Institute of British Architects [RIBA]) or RIBA Work Stages which describes the key tasks, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as the organization in charge of regulation in the US, the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE), the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE), etc. Unfortunately there is not such a regulation in Iran to provide a platform which supports the architectural mission as a social discipline by using a format to generate a foundation toward a standard syntax in the field of architectural design performance.There have always been attention about hesitations and risk; based on the mentioned background, the architectural design project is not risk-free. The confronting strategy is the most important part of managing risk. While risks cannot be omitted, successful projects are those where risks are effectively managed. This paper presents some routine risks that may occur on the process of the architectural design projects in order to establish a model-oriented approach to manage and cope them.It is concluded that architects must take the responsibility to manage their applicable risks in accordance with the architectural design process and work cooperatively from the possible phase onwards to address potential risks in time. Risk management is thus a notable tool to cope with such substantial risks. Risk management is about thinking ahead and analysing the risks and hesitations involved in a project, which is most important part of the quality management system. The results from this study show a necessity for improvements regarding risk management in architectural design projects.

  • Humans and Seagrasses in East Africa : A social-ecological systems approach

    • The present study is one of the first attempts to analyze the societal importance of seagrasses (marine flowering plants) from a Natural Resource Management perspective, using a social-ecological systems (SES) approach. The interdisciplinary study takes place in East Africa (Western Indian Ocean, WIO) and includes in-depth studies in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Natural and social sciences methods were used. The results are presented in six articles, showing that seagrass ecosystems are rich in seagrass species (13) and form an important part of the SES within the tropical seascape of the WIO. Seagrasses provide livelihoods opportunities and basic animal protein, in from of seagrass associated fish e.g. Siganidae and Scaridae. Research, management and education initiatives are, however, nearly non-existent. In Chwaka Bay, the goods and ecosystem services associated with the meadows and also appreciated by locals were fishing and collection grounds as well as substrate for seaweed cultivation. Seagrasses are used as medicines and fertilizers and associated with different beliefs and values. Dema (basket trap) fishery showed clear links to seagrass beds and provided the highest gross income per capita of all economic activities. All showing that the meadows provide social-ecological resilience. Drag-net fishery seems to damage the meadows. Two ecological studies show that artisanal seaweed farming of red algae, mainly done by women and pictured as sustainable in the WIO, has a thinning effect on seagrass beds, reduces associated macrofauna, affects sediments, changes fish catch composition and reduces diversity. Furthermore, it has a negative effect on i.a. women’s health. The two last papers are institutional analyses of the human-seagrass relationship. A broad approach was used to analyze regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive institutions. Cooperation and conflict take place between different institutions, interacting with their slow or fast moving characteristics, and are thus fundamental in directing the system into sustainable/unsustainable paths. Ecological knowledge was heterogeneous and situated. Due to the abundance of resources and high internal control, the SES seems to be entangled in a rigidity trap with the risk of falling into a poverty trap. Regulations were found insufficient to understand SES dynamics. “Well” designed organizational structures for management were found insufficient for “good” institutional performance. The dynamics between individuals embedded in different social and cultural structures showed to be crucial. Bwana Dikos, monitoring officials, placed in villages or landing sites in Zanzibar experienced four dilemmas – kinship, loyalty, poverty and control – which decrease efficiency and affect resilience. Mismatches between institutions themselves, and between institutions and cognitive capacities were identified. Some important practical implications are the need to include seagrass meadows in management and educational plans, addressing a seascape perspective, livelihood diversification, subsistence value, impacts, social-ecological resilience, and a broad institutional approach.

  • Effect of Radiotherapy Dose on Outcome in Nonmetastatic Sarcoma

    • Purpose: Radiation therapy (RT) is an integral part of Ewing sarcoma (EwS) therapy. The Ewing 2008 protocol recommended RT doses ranging from 45 to 54 Gy. However, some patients received other doses of RT. We analyzed the effect of different RT doses on event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with EwS.Methods and Materials: The Ewing 2008 database included 528 RT-admitted patients with nonmetastatic EwS. Recommended multimodal therapy consisted of multiagent chemotherapy and local treatment consisting of surgery (S & RT group) and/or RT (RT group). EFS and OS were analyzed with uni-and multivariable Cox regression models including known prognostic factors such as age, sex, tumor volume, surgical margins, and histologic response.Results: S & RT was performed in 332 patients (62.9%), and 145 patients (27.5%) received definitive RT. Standard dose =53 Gy (d1) was admitted in 57.8%, high dose of 54 to 58 Gy (d2) in 35.5%, and very high dose > 59 Gy (d3) in 6.6% of patients. In the RT group, RT dose was d1 in 11.7%, d2 in 44.1%, and d3 in 44.1% of patients. Three-year EFS in the S & RT group was 76.6% for d1, 73.7% for d2, and 68.2% for d3 (P = .42) and in the RT group 52.9%, 62.5%, and 70.3% (P = .63), respectively. Multivariable Cox regression revealed age > 15 years (hazard ratio [HR], 2.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.63-4.38) and nonradical margins (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.05-2.93) for the S & RT group (sex, P = .96; histologic response, P = .07; tumor volume, P = .50; dose, P = .10) and large tumor volume (HR, 2.20; 95% CI, 1.21-4.0) for the RT group as independent factors (dose, P = .15; age, P = .08; sex, P = .40).Conclusions: In the combined local therapy modality group, treatment with higher RT dose had an effect on EFS, whereas higher dose of radiation when treated with definitive RT was associated with an increased OS. Indications for selection biases for dosage were found. Upcoming trials will assess the value of different RT doses in a randomized manner to control for potential selection bias.

    • We consider N transmitter-receiver pairs that share a wireless channel and we address the problem of obtaining a schedule for activating subsets of these links so as to empty the transmitter queues in minimum time. Our aim is to provide theoretical insights for the optimality characterization of the problem, using both a cross-layer model formulation, which takes into account the effect of interference on achievable transmission rates, as well as a collision-based model, which does not incorporate the physical layer realities into the problem. We present the basic linear programming formulation of the problem and establish that the optimal schedule need not consist of more than N subset activation frames. We then prove that the problem is NP-hard for all reasonable continuous rate functions. Finally, we obtain sufficient and/or necessary conditions for optimality in a number of special cases.

    • Signaling data from the cellular networks can provide a means of analyzing the efficiency of a deployed transportation system and assisting in the formulation of transport models to predict its future use. An approach based on this type of data can be especially appealing for transportation systems that need massive expansions, since it has the added benefit that no specialized equipment or installations are required, hence it can be very cost efficient.Within this context in this paper we describe how such obtained data can be processed and used in order to act as enablers for traditional transportation analysis models. We outline a layered, modular architectural framework that encompasses the entire process and present results from initial analysis of mobile phone call data in the context of mobility, transport and transport infrastructure. We finally introduce the Mobility Analytics Platform, developed by Ericsson Research, tailored for mobility analysis, and discuss techniques for analyzing transport supply and demand, and give indication on how cell phone use data can be used directly to analyze the status and use of the current transport infrastructure.

    • Under operating conditions (forward bias) bipolar 4H- and 6H-SiC devices are known to degrade rapidly through stacking fault formation and expansion in the basal plane. It has been suggested that a recombination-enhanced dislocation glide (REDG) mechanism allows the bordering Shockley partial dislocations to overcome their barrier to glide motion and thus results in the observed stacking fault growth. In this work, we investigate the structure and properties of the participating Shockley partials by means of density functional-based atomistic calculations. Their glide motion is modelled in a process involving the formation and subsequent migration of kinks. This in combination with an analysis of the electronic structure of the partials allows an identification of those types which will be affected by the REDG mechanism.
