  • The boards functional emphasis – A contingency approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Corporate Ownership & Control. - Sumy : Virtus Interpress. - 1727-9232 .- 1810-3057. ; 4:2, s. 24-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The understanding of the board of a corporation and its behavior is limited, despite the board’s societalimportance. We present a contingency approach to the board’s functional emphasis, considering afourth function in addition to monitoring, decision making, and service or resource provision. Theadditional function is conflict resolution (or principal identification). The approach contrasts withmainstream research by assuming that the firm is a nexus of investments, avoiding the empiricalassumption that the shareholder is the sole principal. We derive propositions that are not restricted toany empirical category of a corporation, and address praxis implications for managing functionaldisharmony.

  • Turnover and heterogeneity in top management networks : a demographic analysis of two Swedish business groups
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Science and Applied Management. - Newcastle upon Tyne, UK : Brunel University. - 1753-0296. ; 3:3, s. 31-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A theory based on the demography of top management teams is used to explain membership turnover in two Swedish business groups, network analysis being used to define group membership. The results suggest these business groups possess a combination of financial and industrial experience as a group resource and the socialising strategy of control as a force counteracting the conflict-producing force of heterogeneity. An organisational demographic perspective focusing on opposing forces of heterogeneity and homogeneity is developed. It is shown that the perspective can be applied both to formal organisations and to informal ones such as networks.

  • The influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on municipal meeting places arranging group exercise for older persons
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Many municipalities today, together with other stakeholders, offer group exercises for the older population via municipal meeting places, focusing on promoting good health. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these group exercises either continued in a modified form or ceased. The aim of this study was to explore involved stakeholders' experiences of group exercises for older persons arranged via municipal meeting places during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS: Six online focus group interviews were conducted with 25 stakeholders, such as decision-makers and representatives from the non-profit sector, from seven municipalities in Sweden. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: The collaboration around the group exercises was challenged due to affected communication and decision-making. The stakeholders described the importance of adapting and finding new ways to offer group exercise. Furthermore, the re-arranging of group exercises created concerns about the well-being of the older persons but also happiness with the older persons ability to act for their own well-being during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of the municipalities exchanging experiences, making the older persons more involved in the decision-making process, enabling a person-centred encounter with the older persons when exercising in groups, and strengthening supportive environments by sharing the ownership of arranging the group exercises with the older persons.

  • Awareness of demands and unfairness and the importance of connectedness and security : Teenage girls’ lived experiences of their everyday lives
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, a number of studies have demonstrated that stress and mental health problems have increased among adolescents and especially among girls, although little is still known concerning what girls experience in their everyday lives. The aim of this study was to describe the phenomenon of teenage girls’ everyday lives, as experienced by the girls themselves. A phenomenological approach of reflective lifeworld research was used, and the findings are based on eight qualitative interviews with girls aged 13–16 years. The essence of teenage girls’ everyday lives as experienced by the girls themselves can be described as consciousness regarding demands and unfairness and regarding the importance of connectedness and security. The girls are aware of the demands of appearance and success, and they are conscious of the gender differences in school and in the media that affect them. The girls are also conscious about the meaning of connectedness with friends and family, as well as the importance of the security of their confidence in friends and feeling safe where they stay. If teenage girls feel connected and secure, protective factors in the form of manageability and meaningfulness can act as a counterweight to the demands and unfairness of everyday life. For professionals who work with teenage girls, the results from this study can be important in their work to support these girls.

  • Psychometric properties of a Swedish version of the Pearlin Mastery Scale in people with mental illness and healthy people
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 0803-9488 .- 1502-4725. ; 66:6, s. 380-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Mastery refers to the degree to which people perceive that they can control factors that influence their life situation, and has been found important for people's quality of life and well-being. It is thus essential to be able to measure mastery in a valid and reliable way. Aim: This study aimed at using the Rasch measurement model to investigate the psychometric properties of a Swedish version of the Pearlin Mastery Scale (Mastery-S). Methods: A sample of 300 healthy individuals and 278 persons with mental illness responded to the Mastery-S. Item responses were Rasch analysed regarding model fit, response category functioning, differential item functioning (DIF) and targeting, using the partial credit model. Results: The Mastery-S items represented a logical continuum of the measured construct but one item displayed misfit. Reliability (Person Separation Index) was 0.7. The response categories did not work as expected in three items, which could be corrected for by collapsing categories. Three items displayed DIF between the two subsamples, which caused a bias when comparing mastery levels between subsamples, suggesting the Mastery-S is not truly generic. Conclusions: The Mastery-S may be used to obtain valid and reliable data, but some precautions should be made. If used to compare groups, new analyses of DIF should first be made. Users of the scale should also consider exempting item 6 from the scale and analyse it as a separate item. Finally, rewording of response categories should be considered in order to make them more distinct and thereby improve score reliability.

  • The Music Classroom in Focus : Everyday Culture, Identity, Governance and Knowledge Formation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordic Research in Music Education. - Oslo : Norges musikkhøgskole. - 0333-3760. ; 12, s. 101-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on a larger research project with the purpose to study how market aesthetics and student’s music culture are expressed in the Swedish music classroom. The empirical material consists of video observations of classroom activities in secondary school settings in Sweden. The theoretical framework consists of poststructuralist and social constructionist theory combined with theories of late modernity, while our methodological point of departure is discourse analysis. Some important analytical concepts are identity, dominance, governance and knowledge formation. Three different strategies for incorporating market aesthetics and students’ music culture into music education were identified: learning about, reflecting on and applying. An ideological dilemma occurred when the fostering mission of school was confronted with the will to meet the students’ demands for freedom of expression. The results of the project also suggest that standardised and regulated forms of activity were counterproductive to creativity in music making. Six different strategies of gentle governance in the music classroom were identified. Popular music was presented by the teachers in a way analogous to the canon of art music that is predominant in the teaching of music history at school.

  • Adequate Digital Competence. Exploring revisions in the Swedish national curriculum.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Educare. - Malmö : Malmo University Library. - 1653-1868 .- 2004-5190. ; 2, s. 74-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how digital competence is conceptualized in recent revisions in the curriculum for Swedish compulsory school. Four themes are identified based on a thematic content analysis of the revisions in the subject descriptions: use of digital tools and media, programming, critical awareness and responsibility. The distribution of the thematic revisions differs among the subjects, but the most dominating theme, permeating all the subjects, concerns the tool-oriented use of digital tools and media. This strong dominance of operational perspective tends to narrow the conceptualization compared to international definitions and frameworks of digital competence.

  • Fem elevers föreställningar om organsystem : vad händer i kroppen när vi dricker vatten?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: NorDiNa. - Oslo : Naturfagsenteret / Norwegian Centre for Science Education. - 1504-4556 .- 1894-1257. ; 7:2, s. 160-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has earlier been shown on a group level that it is difficult for 9th grade students (15-16 years old) in a Swedish school to understand how water is transported in the human body. The detailed analysis of five Swedish students in the 9th and final year of compulsory school concerning their ideas about water transportation is presented here. The empirical data consists of drawings, answers to a questionnaire with both open ended and multiple-choice questions, and student interviews. The analysis shows that all the students struggle to produce explanations involving the three organ systems: digestive, blood and excretion systems and they seem to use a variety of explanatory models as basis for their reasoning. Possible ways of understanding this are discussed together with implications for future teaching

  • Ideas about the human body among secondary students in South Africa
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: African Journal of Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1028-8457 .- 1811-7295 .- 2469-7656. ; 19:2, s. 199-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we focus on how South African students’ ideas about the human body are constituted in their descriptions of three different scenarios involving the pathway of a sandwich, a painkiller and a glass of water through the body. In particular, we have studied the way in which the students transferred ideas between the sandwich and the painkiller compared with the students' ability to explain the water pathway. The study surveyed 161 ninth-grade students in five different schools in South Africa. Data collection methods used were: drawings, written questions (open-ended items) and interviews with selected students. The questions emerged from the three scenarios—what happens in the body when you eat a sandwich, swallow a painkiller and drink a glass of water. We report that it is difficult for the students to transfer knowledge of the digestive system horizontally from the sandwich scenario to descriptions of the painkiller and water scenarios. The integration of three organ systems (digestive, circulatory and excretory) to describe the water scenario was even more difficult for the students than the horizontal transfer from the sandwich scenario. The students also showed a diversity of non-scientific descriptions, especially concerning the water scenario. The paper discusses why a large percentage of the students (∼50%) included non-scientific ideas in their decriptions of the water scenario.
