  • Bond Stress Development at a Surface Coating Substrate Interface due to the Action of a Nucleus of Thermo-Elastic Strain
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 202:9, s. 1704-1711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The class of problems dealing with surface reinforced elastic media is encountered in many areas of materials engineering, notably in connection with surface layers that are used to provide protection to an otherwise softer substrate. These problems are of particular importance to the assessment of the mechanical behaviour of thin films and other forms of industrial coatings. This paper examines the problem related to the flexure of a plate-like surface layer that is bonded to an elastic halfspace region, and where the flexure of the coating is induced by a nucleus of thermo-elastic strain acting within the halfspace region.

  • Degeneracies of the temporal Orr-Sommerfeld eigenmodes in plane Poiseuille flow
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluid Mechanics. - 0022-1120 .- 1469-7645. ; 201, s. 13-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Degenerating stable temporal Orr-Sommerfeld eigenmodes are studied for plane Poiseuille flow. The discrete spectrum of the eigenmodes is shown to possess infinitely many degeneracies, each appearing at a certain combination of k (the modulus of resultant wavenumber) and αR (the streamwise wavenumber time the Reynolds number). The eigenmodes are found to degenerate in a specific manner which confines the streamwise phase velocities of the degeneracies to be around 2/3 of the centreline velocity. The responses of the degeneracies are investigated through the initial-value problem. The responses of the first four symmetric and the first two antisymmetric degeneracies are evaluated numerically for arbitrary initial disturbances expanded in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. The first symmetric and the first antisymmetric degeneracies exhibit temporal growth of the amplitudes in the wavenumber space.

  • A classification for extant ferns
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 55:3, s. 705-731
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a revised classification for extant ferns, with emphasis on ordinal and familial ranks, and a synopsis of included genera. Our classification reflects recently published phylogenetic hypotheses based on both morphological and molecular data. Within our new classification, we recognize four monophyletic classes, 11 monophyletic orders, and 37 families, 32 of which are strongly supported as monophyletic. One new family, Cibotiaceae Korall, is described. The phylogenetic affinities of a few genera in the order Polypodiales are unclear and their familial placements are therefore tentative. Alphabetical lists of accepted genera (including common synonyms), families, orders, and taxa of higher rank are provided.

  • The Archival Life of Home Movies : Regional Reflections and Negotiated Visions of a Shared Past
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates the ways in which private home movies are transformed into curated archival objects. Through the concept of the archival home movie, it explores the impact of preservation and content description on access, use, and, thus, regional historiography. Additionally, it maps out the relationship between ordinary home-movie imagery and regional meaning making.Using material from the University of Mississippi’s Home Movie Collection as a case study, the dissertation centers on the practice of researching family films and the possibilities for their contemporary cultural relevance. In recent years, home movies and amateur film have become topics of interest in studies of non-theatrical film as sources for unofficial histories. This dissertation intervenes into these discussions of the cultural value of home movies as a hands-on and self-reflexive investigation into the archive itself, as well as an activation of the archive. This methodology includes stagings of the home movie in live screenings, through which the dissertation investigates modes of spectator engagement with the historical material.Chapter 1 assesses strategies for working with archival home movies that draw from areas such as the study of family photography and photo albums, as well as the study of diaries. The following chapters each move further away from the familial point of origin of the home movie and toward regional re-readings and archival reuses. Using “home” as a starting point, Chapter 2 engages with the domestic elements in a selection of home movies shot on a cotton plantation during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Through an expanded notion of home, it argues that work and free time, public and private, and family and nonfamily are intertwined—both onscreen and off. Chapter 3 positions a collection of archival home movies shot in the Mississippi Delta in the 1950s as mediated witness to the ever-presence and—at times—invisibility of institutionalized racism in the mid-century American South. Chapter 4 maps the creative treatment of one collection of archival home movies in contemporary documentaries, museum installations, and experimental films. Finally, Chapter 5 evaluates the activation of home movies as constructed regional reflections in a series of live screenings associated with Home Movie Day.Previous studies of family photographs and family film have pointed to the ways these media function to obscure discord and present a harmonious picture. Overall, this study of southern home movies demonstrates how a double logic of obfuscation is at work in these films. In addition to a vision of familial harmony, this dissertation argues that the southern home movie also puts forth a vision of racial harmony. This onscreen racial harmony, when presented during the Jim Crow years, should be understood as the result of a specifically white fantasy of racial togetherness that, at the same time, upholds traditional hierarchies.

  • A Picture is Worth a Thousand Keywords : Exploring Mobile Image-Based Web Searching
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Advances in Human-Computer Interaction. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1687-5893 .- 1687-5907. ; 2008
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Images of objects as queries is a new approach to search for information on the web. Image-based information retrieval goes beyond only matching images, as information in other modalities also can be extracted from data collections using image search. We have developed a new system that uses images to search for web-based information. This paper has a particular focus towards exploring user’s experience of general mobile image-based Web searches to find what issues and phenomena it contains. This was achieved in a multi-part study by creating and letting respondents test prototypes of mobile image-based search systems and collecting data using interviews, observations, video-observations, and questionnaires. We observed that searching for information only based on visual similarity and without any assistance is sometimes difficult, especially on mobile devices with limited interaction bandwidth. Most of our subjects preferred a search tool that guides the users through the search result based on contextual information, compared to presenting the search result as a plain ranked list.

  • The interplay of descriptor-based computational analysis with pharmacophore modeling builds the basis for a novel classification scheme for feruloyl esterases
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology Advances. - : Elsevier BV. - 0734-9750. ; 29:1, s. 94-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most intriguing groups of enzymes, the feruloyl esterases (FAEs), is ubiquitous in both simple and complex organisms. FAEs have gained importance in biofuel, medicine and food industries due to their capability of acting on a large range of substrates for cleaving ester bonds and synthesizing high-added value molecules through esterification and transesterification reactions. During the past two decades extensive studies have been carried out on the production and partial characterization of FAEs from fungi, while much less is known about FAEs of bacterial or plant origin. Initial classification studies on FAEs were restricted on sequence similarity and substrate specificity on just four model substrates and considered only a handful of FAEs belonging to the fungal kingdom. This study centers on the descriptor-based classification and structural analysis of experimentally verified and putative FAEs; nevertheless, the framework presented here is applicable to every poorly characterized enzyme family. 365 FAE-related sequences of fungal, bacterial and plantae origin were collected and they were clustered using Self Organizing Maps followed by k-means clustering into distinct groups based on amino acid composition and physico-chemical composition descriptors derived from the respective amino acid sequence. A Support Vector Machine model was subsequently constructed for the classification of new FAEs into the pre-assigned clusters. The model successfully recognized 98.2% of the training sequences and all the sequences of the blind test. The underlying functionality of the 12 proposed FAE families was validated against a combination of prediction tools and published experimental data. Another important aspect of the present work involves the development of pharmacophore models for the new FAE families, for which sufficient information on known substrates existed. Knowing the pharmacophoric features of a small molecule that are essential for binding to the members of a certain family opens a window of opportunities for tailored applications of FAEs.
