Surfing the Waves of the CMJ : Are There between-Sport Differences in the Waveform Data?

- The ability to analyse countermovement jump (CMJ) waveform data using statistical methods, like principal component analysis, can provide additional information regarding the different phases of the CMJ, compared to jump height or peak power alone. The aim of this study was to investigate the between-sport force-time curve differences in the CMJ. Eighteen high level golfers (male = 10, female = 8) and eighteen high level surfers (male = 10, female = 8) performed three separate countermovement jumps on a force platform. Time series of data from the force platform was normalized to body weight and each repetition was then normalized to 0–100 percent. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed on force waveforms and the first six PCs explained 35% of the variance in force parameters. The main features of the movement cycles were characterized by magnitude (PC1 and PC5), waveform (PC2 and PC4), and phase shift features (PC3). Surf athletes differ in their CMJ technique and show a greater negative centre of mass displacement when compared to golfers (PC1), although these differences are not necessarily associated with greater jump height. Principal component 5 demonstrated the largest correlation with jump height (R2 = 0.52). Further studies are recommended in this area, to reveal which features of the CMJ thatrelate to jumping performance, and sport specific adaptations. © 2018 by the authors.

Lactobacillus reuteri influences regrowth of mutans streptococci after full-mouth disinfection : a double-blind, randomised controlled trial

- This study assessed whether the persistence of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289 in saliva could delay the regrowth of mutans streptococci (MS) after a full-mouth disinfection with chlorhexidine (CHX). A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with a 6-week intervention period and 3- and 6-month follow-up was performed. 62 healthy subjects with moderate to high counts of MS were randomly assigned to a test group (n = 32) or a placebo group (n = 30). Before onset of the intervention, subjects received two sessions of professional cleaning, flossing, and application of CHX varnish and rinsed their mouth with a CHX solution between the sessions (2 days). Thereafter, the test group used probiotic lozenges (2/day) containing L. reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289; 1 × 108 CFU of each strain), and the placebo group used identical lozenges lacking the lactobacilli. Saliva samples were collected and cultured onto selective media, and isolates of L. reuteri as well as DNA directly extracted from saliva were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with specific primers. Presence of salivary MS was analysed with a chair-side test. L. reuteri was frequently detected by culture during the intervention period but in only 3 test group subjects at follow-ups. Regrowth of MS statistically significantly differed depending on the presence or absence of L. reuteri DSM 17938 detected by PCR. We conclude that cultivable L. reuteri strains may only sporadically be confirmed after termination of the intervention, but subjects with PCR-detected L. reuteridemonstrated slower regrowth of MS.

The Third Gospel for the First Time: Luke within the Context of Ancient Biography

- If Luke’s first audience understood the Gospel as a biography, what would their experience of the text have been? This book invites the reader to accompany the first readers or hearers of Luke’s Gospel and to experience the narrative about the life of Jesus alongside them. It utilises Wolfgang Iser’s theory about reading and readers and focuses on gaps and vacancies in the text. The most important passages are Lk 2.41-51; 9.28-36 and 24.13-32. It also considers the audience’s previous knowledge, derived from the preaching recorded in the Book of Acts and from the narratives of the Septuagint, and explores the understanding of the human lifespan in ancient time in general. The audience would probably have been acquainted with Isocrates’ Evagoras, Xenophon’s Agesilaus and Philo’s De Vita Mosis. It must also be assumed that Luke’s first audience would have been sensitive to the development of genre current at that time. This book pays attention to similarities regarding themes and differences in narrative techniques and can serve as a thematic commentary on Luke’s Gospel. It also addresses the question: What is the use of genre classification for the exegetical tasks?
