  • Reinforcement Learning for Anti-Ransomware Testing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE East-West Design and Test Symposium, EWDTS 2020 - Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728198996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we are going to verify the possibility to create a ransomware simulation that will use an arbitrary combination of known tactics and techniques to bypass an anti-malware defense. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in which an agent was trained with the help of reinforcement learning to run the ransomware simulator in a way that can bypass anti-ransomware solution and encrypt the target files. The novelty of the proposed method lies in applying reinforcement learning to anti-ransomware testing that may help to identify weaknesses in the anti-ransomware defense and fix them before a real attack happens. © 2020 IEEE.

  • The state of ransomware : Trends and mitigation techniques
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 2017 IEEE East-West Design and Test Symposium, EWDTS 2017. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538632994
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contains an analysis of the payload of the popular ransomware for Windows, Android, Linux, and MacOSX platforms. Namely, VaultCrypt (CrypVault), TeslaCrypt, NanoLocker, Trojan-Ransom.Linux.Cryptor, Android Simplelocker, OSX/KeRanger-A, WannaCry, Petya, NotPetya, Cerber, Spora, Serpent ransomware were put under the microscope. A set of characteristics was proposed to be used for the analysis. The purpose of the analysis is generalization of the collected data that describes behavior and design trends of modern ransomware. The objective is to suggest ransomware threat mitigation techniques based on the obtained information. The novelty of the paper is the analysis methodology based on the chosen set of 13 key characteristics that helps to determine similarities and differences thorough the list of ransomware put under analysis. Most of the ransomware samples presented were manually analyzed by the authors eliminating contradictions in descriptions of ransomware behavior published by different malware research laboratories through verification of the payload of the latest versions of ransomware. © 2017 IEEE.

  • What is the word for 'Engineering' in Swedish : Swedish students conceptions of their discipline
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Engineering education in Sweden – as in the rest of the world – is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation. The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how tudents and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of “a Swedish perspective” on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

  • Moving beyond the language–Visualizing chemical concepts through one’s own creative expression
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2504-284X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to explore university students’ interpretations of chemical content in the form of physical constructions of atomic nuclei. Playdough was chosen as the means for expression, since it provided the students with the task of choosing the number, form, size, shape, and distance of particles. Data was collected in the form of photographs, written explanations as well as ad hoc notes. Data from 64 students was analyzed using the three levels of analysis as presented by Hedegaard and framed within the theories of models. Results show that students’ choices gave rise to 34 variations of the atomic nuclei. The analysis provided two different categories: models with close resemblance to the teaching model and models with less resemblance to the teaching model. Results show the limitations of verbal and written communication and add to the discussion concerning students’ interpretations of the multitude of atomic models used in teaching. The method was indeed a beneficial tool both for students, who could explore the composition of atomic nuclei and isotopes, and for teachers, who could connect their teaching to students’ interpretations of scientific content since the method brings a new level of detail to discussions. • Evaluation of the FDI Chairside Guide for Assessment of Periodontal Conditions : A Multicentre Observational Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Dental Journal. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0020-6539 .- 1875-595X. ; 71:5, s. 390-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: There is a need to develop easy-to-use tools to screen periodontal condition in daily practice. This study aimed to evaluate the FDI World Dental Federation “Chairside Guide” (FDI-CG) developed by the Task Team of the FDI Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP) as a potential tool for screening. Methods: Databases from 3 centres in Germany, Hong Kong, and Spain (n = 519) were used to evaluate the association of the FDI-CG and its individual items with the periodontitis case definitions proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for population-based surveillance of periodontitis. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed among the databases for the prevalence of periodontitis and the items included in the FDI-CG. The FDI-CG score and its individual components were significantly associated with the periodontal status in the individual databases and the total sample, with bleeding on probing showing the strongest association with severe periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] = 12.9, 95% CI [5.9; 28.0], P < .001, for those presenting bleeding on probing >50%), followed by age (OR = 4.8, 95% CI [1.7; 4.2], P = .004, for those older than 65 years of age). Those subjects with a FDI-CG score >10 had an OR of 54.0 (95% CI [23.5; 124.2], P < .001) and presented with severe periodontitis. A significant correlation was found between the different FDI-CG scoring categories (mild, moderate, and severe) and the categories for mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology criteria (r = 0.57, Spearman rank correlation test, P < .001). Conclusion: The FDI Chairside Guide may represent a suitable tool for screening the periodontal condition by general practitioners in daily dental practice. © 2020 The Authors

  • The effect of periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis : a case series
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 43:5, s. 445-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on intra-oral halitosis 3 months after therapy.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-eight adults with intra-oral halitosis were included in a case series. Intra-oral halitosis was evaluated at baseline, and at 3 months after treatment using the organoleptic scores (OLS), Halimeter® , and a gas chromatograph.RESULTS: Significant reductions for OLS (p < 0.01), total sum of volatile sulphur compounds (T-VSC) (p < 0.01) and methyl mercaptan (MM) (p < 0.05) values were found after treatment. Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) levels were not significantly reduced. The numbers of probing pockets 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm were significantly reduced as a result of therapy (p < 0.001). Bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque indices were also significantly reduced (p < 0.001). For the 34 individuals with successful periodontal treatment (BOP<20% and a ≥50% reduction of total pocket depth) reductions in OLS (p < 0.01) and T-VSC scores (p < 0.01) were found. Eleven individuals were considered effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis presenting with a T-VSC value <160 ppb, a H2 S value <112 ppb and a MM value <26 ppb.CONCLUSION: Non-surgical periodontal therapy resulted in reduction of OLS, MM and T-VSC values 3 months after therapy. Few individuals were considered as effectively treated for intra-oral halitosis.

  • Towards an Open-Source Based E-Mail Forensic Tool that uses Headers in Digital Investigation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - : ACM Digital Library. - 9798400700194
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Email-related incidents/crimes are on the rise owing to the fact that communication by electronic mail (e-mail) has become an important part of our daily lives. The technicality behind e-mail plays an important role when looking for digital evidence that can be used to create a hypothesis that can be used during litigation. During this process, it is needful to have a tool that can help to isolate email incidents as a potential crime scene in the wake of suspected attacks. The problem that this paper is addressing paper, is more centered on realizing an open-source email-forensic tool that used the header analysis approach. One advantage of this approach is that it helps investigators to collect digital evidence from e-mail systems, organize the collected data, analyze and discover any discrepancies in the header fields of an e-mail, and generates an evidence report. The main contribution of this paper focuses on generating a freshly computed hash that is attached to every generated report, to ensure the verifiability, reliability, and integrity of the reports to prove that they have not been modified in any way. Finally, this ensures that the sanctity and forensic soundness of the collected evidence are maintained. © 2023 ACM.
