- This thesis investigates the microsyntax of articles and personal pronouns in the medieval varieties of Lombardy and Veneto (13th–15th century). The study combines functionalism and grammaticalization theories with the principles of pragmatics and textual linguistics. The investigation draws upon a corpus of 47 texts selected to ensure representativeness across various diaphasic and diastratic varieties.The emergence of the article was analyzed based on syntactic, pragmatic, and semantic constraints. The analysis shows that syntactic instances exhibiting stronger diachronic resistance to the grammaticalization of the article are prepositional phrases, enumerations, and vocative phrases. Concerning pragmatic constraints, the definite article is generally required in the presence of universally known and unique referents as well as with inalienable possession. With respect to semantic constraints, there is greater fluctuation in the alternation between zero article and the definite article. The semantics of special noun classes (namely proper names, kinship terms, and abstract nouns) exerts greater resistance to the grammaticalization of the determiner. Overall, by the 14th century in both Lombard and Venetan varieties, the definite article exhibits an advanced functional stage along the cline of grammaticalization. With respect to the indefinite article, uno is fully grammaticalized as a marker of specific indefiniteness while still competing with other constructions for marking non-specific indefinite referents. Moreover, the analysis attests to the early instances of partitive nominal constructions and partitive articles.Regarding the personal subject pronouns, their microsyntax was analyzed with respect to three interdependent phenomena characterized by complex processes of polymorphism, polyfunctionality, and reorganization of syntactic systems. On the expression of pronominal subjects (PS), the quantitative analysis highlights that the rate of PS expression is strongly dependent on the type of proposition, namely main, coordinate, and subordinate. Notably, the PS is generally expressed in main clauses and subordinate clauses, notwithstanding the presence of functional restrictions. This indicates a system where the expression of PS is typically obligatory in both clauses, conflicting with the so-called “asymmetric pro-drop” hypothesis. The analysis shows that the emergence of a new tonic paradigm of PS, developed from the oblique pronouns, is associated with special syntactic and pragmatic conditions. However, from the mid-14th century onward, the new tonic forms appear more frequently in the canonical subject position, signaling the rise of a new paradigm. This phenomenon coincides with the parallel emergence of subject clitics. Based on four syntactic criteria, the evidence hints at the development of a clitic subject paradigm exhibiting characteristics of a classic grammaticalization process such as weakening and cliticization.All in all, this thesis underscores the complex linguistic landscape of medieval Italy, and argues that the evolution of articles and personal pronouns in these substandard varieties aligns with the predictions from grammaticalization theories, providing insights into the dynamics of linguistic change.

- In questo articolo presentiamo una serie di statuette, vasi plastici e lucerne trovate ad Ostia antica, e studiati nell’ambito del progetto “Segregated or Integrated? Living and Dying in the Harbour City of Ostia, 300 BCE-700 CE”, che ha esaminato le forme culturali della coesistenza degli abitanti romani e non-romani della città portuale. Il contributo si focalizza sulle rappresentazioni degli stranieri nelle arti minori in forma grottesca legate alla sfera sessuale e analizza gli usi di tali immagini come apotropaia. La discussione comincia da una serie di erme priapiche, continua con lucerne plastiche in forma fallica e con una statuetta c.d. pseudo-Baubo egiziana. La parte finale è dedicata alla discussione approfondita di una particolare lucerna erotica ostiense, importata dalla fabbrica ateniese di Preimos, e probabilmente trovata in contesto funerario.

- The article provides a list of 80Italian loanwords that may be found in Swedish today, from aperitivoto villa: 30of them are direct loans from Italian, 34 have been imported through French, 16 through German, English or some other Germanic language. We also add a short list of five words formed in Swedish on the basis of an Italian loanword. Our list is based on a corpus of articles published under the category “Italien” on the online version of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheterduring the first six months of 2019. For every headword we provide grammatical information, one or more definitions, the date of the first attestation, the first three passages where the lexical unit occurs in a certain meaning, an Italian translation of the passages, additional word forms that are not present in the quoted passages and the total number of occurrences in the corpus. Some comments follow.

It is a common opinion that the linguistic prescriptions contained in the book chapterApparato per la seconda parte follow the path traced by Pietro Bembo and Benedetto Varchi.However, a close reading shows that Panigarola supports a new linguistic model, more open tothe needs of modern times.

- The contrast between a formal and an everyday language in vernacular preaching can take diverse forms. The first aspect is the relationship between Latin and vernacular: manifested either as a distinct option in favour of one of the two languages, or as the use of Latin words or phrases within a vernacular text. In the latter case the amount and function of the Latin may vary. The second aspect of the problem is the choice between literary Italian, the local vernacular or an intermediate variety. The third is the variation between a higher and a lower register within the Italian language.

Second, they were focusingon the educated public rather than the common people. Third, they both tendedto overestimate the success of the foreign models of linguistic unification thatthey were studying. As far as the first two points are concerned, a more pragmaticperspective was expressed by Raffaello Lambruschini, although his contributionlacked a constructive aspect.

- La scelta del dialetto friulano da parte di Pasolini in Poesie a Casarsa (1942) si giustifica in primo luogo come presa di posizione contro l’usurata lingua della tradizione letteraria italiana in favore di una lingua marginale, «antichissima eppure del tutto vergine» (Pasolini, 1946, p. 14), trasfigurata in un personale idioletto poetico. Dal punto di vista strettamente dialettale, si tratta di una lingua libresca e artefatta, frutto di una «violenza linguistica» che «tendeva a fare del parlato casarsese insieme una koiné friulana e una specie di linguaggio assoluto, inesistente in natura» (Pasolini, 1954, p. 157).Solo dopo il lungo apprendistato dialettale a Casarsa negli anni della guerra l’autore giunge alla piena padronanza del genuino dialetto casarsese come dimostra il rifacimento linguistico delle poesie del 1942 confluito nella Meglio gioventù (1954). Muovendosi tra filologia d’autore e dialettologia, il presente contributo indaga la sensibilità linguistica di Pasolini analizzando i cambiamenti apportati al sistema fonetico, morfosintattico e lessicale delle prime poesie nella nuova versione della Meglio gioventù per sondare da vicino il passaggio dalla «lingua inventata» alla «lingua imparata» (Canciani, 1983, p. 97).
