  • Young students posing problem‑solving tasks: what does posing a similar task imply to students?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ZDM - the International Journal on Mathematics Education. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1863-9690 .- 1863-9704. ; 52:4, s. 743-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on problem solving and problem posing in mathematics education with 6-year-olds. After working ona problem-solving activity, the young students were asked to pose a similar task to a friend. This article explores how thestudents interpret the notion of similar. To be able to pose a problem-solving task themselves the students had to changeperspective, from searching for information to providing information, and from searching for a solution to searching for aquestion. Also, to create a similar task the students had to reflect on the original problem-solving task. Thus, their posedtasks shed light on their interpretation of what the original problem-solving task was really about. The results show that thelarge majority of the students included some three-dimensional aspects from the original problem-solving task in their posedtasks. However, the questions they posed varied in terms of whether or not they included mathematical elements.

  • Living with epilepsy accompanied by cognitive difficulties: Young adults experiences
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Epilepsy & Behavior. - : Elsevier. - 1525-5050 .- 1525-5069. ; 22:4, s. 750-758
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Epilepsy can sometimes be followed by memory impairment. This can result from the underlying cause of epilepsy or from recurrent seizures, or can be a side effect of antiepileptic drugs or a symptom of another disease such as depression. The aim of the study described here was to explore the experience of living with epilepsy and subjective cognitive decline. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethod: To better understand the deeper meaning of the phenomenon, a qualitative design was chosen. Fourteen adults aged 18-35 took part in focus group interviews. The participants were divided into four groups, two groups of women and two groups of men, and the interviews were conducted according to a semistructured protocol. Transcripts were analyzed in accordance with the content analysis guidelines. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: Four themes emerged: "affecting the whole person," "influencing daily life," "affecting relationships," and "meeting ignorance in society." less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions: Cognitive decline has a heavy impact on young adults with intractable epilepsy. In contrast to seizures, the cognitive decline is persistent. The themes reflected different hardships faced by the participants. The consequences of living with epilepsy and cognitive impairment concerned education, employment, social life, self-esteem, and hope for the future. The participants were already using strategies to cope with their cognitive decline, but may benefit from help in developing new strategies to better adjust to their memory problems. Development of more educational programs for both people with epilepsy and their relatives could improve their difficult situations. With help, people can learn to adjust their goals in life and live a fulfilling life despite the disease.

  • Human skull translucency : post mortem studies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biomedical Optics Express. - 2156-7085. ; 7:12, s. 5010-5020
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of optical translucency of human skulls were carried out. An incandescent light source and a CCD camera were used to measure the distribution of light transmitted through the skull in 10 subjects post-mortem. We noticed that intra-individual differences in optical translucency may be up to 100 times but inter-individual translucency differences across the skull reach 105 times. Based on the measurement results, a "theoretical" experiment was simulated. Monte-Carlo calculations were used in order to evaluate the influence of the differences in optical translucency of the skull on results of NIRS measurements. In these calculations a functional stimulation was done, in which the oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin concentrations in the brain cortex change by 5 mu M and -5 mu M respectively. The maximal discrepancies between assumed hemoglobin concentration changes and hemoglobin concentration changes estimated with Monte-Carlo simulation may reach 50% depending of the translucency of the skull.

  • Vogler to Netzel: Swedish Organ Culture in the 19th Century
  • 2021
  • Konstnärligt arbeteabstract
    • 2-CD survey of Swedish organ music through the 19th century and into the first decade of the 20th century. Brings together 23 works, on the basis of a wider inventory of the entire century, of which 20 are premiere recordings. Five historical instruments from different stages throughout the period are used, in order to couple the music with the sonic possibilities of each stage: the Gustaf Andersson organ in Östra Husby, the Marcussen organ in Väderstad, the Åkerman organs in Rök and Västervik, as well as the Eskil Lundén organ in Vasakyrkan, Göteborg. A comprehensive booklet discusses works, instruments and the wider culture of organ playing in nineteenth century Sweden. Specific attention is given to organ works by female composers towards the turn of the century 1900.Beside Jonas Lundblad, Ulf Norberg contributes as an organist and Tobias Ringborg performs violin solos in two works.

  • Experience can change distinct size-weight priors engaged in lifting objects and judging their weights.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Current Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-9822 .- 1879-0445. ; 18:22, s. 1742-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The expectation that object weight increases with size guides the control of manipulatory actions [1-6] and also influences weight perception. Thus, the size-weight illusion, whereby people perceive the smaller of two equally weighted objects to be heavier, is thought to arise because weight is judged relative to expected weight that, for a given family of objects, increases with size [2, 7]. Here, we show that the fundamental expectation that weight increases with size can be altered by experience and neither is hard-wired nor becomes crystallized during development. We demonstrate that multiday practice in lifting a set of blocks whose color and texture are the same and whose weights vary inversely with volume gradually attenuates and ultimately inverts the size-weight illusion tested with similar blocks. We also show that in contrast to this gradual change in the size-weight illusion, the sensorimotor system rapidly learns to predict the inverted object weights, as revealed by lift forces. Thus, our results indicate that distinct adaptive size-weight maps, or priors, underlie weight predictions made in lifting objects and in judging their weights. We suggest that size-weight priors that influence weight perception change slowly because they are based on entire families of objects. Size-weight priors supporting action are more flexible, and adapt more rapidly, because they are tuned to specific objects and their current state.

  • Geological, mineralogical and chemical characterization of Devonian kaolinite-bearing sediments for further applications in the ceramic (tiles) industry in La Paz, Bolivia
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Environmental Earth Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1866-6280 .- 1866-6299. ; 75:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clay minerals are widely distributed in Bolivia; among them, illitic clays are most common in the Altiplano where they are mined for use in the ceramic industry that has been growing in the last few years. In addition to illitic sediments, kaolinitic sediments have been recently discovered in sedimentary units in the Bolivian Altiplano. Residual ball clay occurrences in Devonian sedimentary units were studied as part of this work. Geological mapping and geophysical studies (ERT and GPR) were done for better understanding the origin of the deposits and were part of a preliminary study of the mineral potential to define the relationship with the host rock. Chemical and mineralogical techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma analyses were performed in samples from the studied area to verify the presence of kaolinite. Atterberg limits and behaviour of the raw material in ceramic specimens supported by chemical analyses show that this material is suitable for manufacturing tile ceramics. This study provides fundamental knowledge for deposit exploitation and future generation of an alternative source of employment for the inhabitants of Micaya
