  • Value modes effect and analysis (ValMEA): a PLS-based theory validation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. - Geneva, Switzerland : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-6474 .- 1746-6482. ; 5:2, s. 213-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value modes effect and analysis (ValMEA) suggests that the concept of customer value can be categorised according to its existence in three different contexts (i.e. production/supply, buying/purchasing, and use) and these three 'modes' of value are interrelated. Based on the collected customer survey data in the house-building construction, two structural models of ValMEA are tested using partial least squares (PLS). The findings from this study confirm previous theory propositions by various researchers. Firstly, these modes of value construct a chain (serial) interconnection, meaning that value in the production/supply context influences the value in the purchasing (buying) context, and the value in the buying context influences the value in use. Individually, value in the production/supply context and purchase value has significant effect on the value in use. Secondly, value in the buying context is a function of core value and added value. Thirdly, value in the buying context can only partially explain the richness of value in use.

  • Will Electronic Procurement Change the Public Sector’s Purchasing Behaviour?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Science and Technology. - 1545-0287. ; 8:2, s. 36-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper highlights the findings from the KNUT project (Electronic Procurement of Telecommunications Services for the Swedish Public Sector). The project created a service to make the whole public procurement process electronically from analysis of needs, through development of request for proposal (RfP), contract administration and feed back, as well as a model for public procurement of telecommunications services outgoing from end-users’ and organisational needs. The study includes a detailed analysis of the procurement process. Among the results is a new way of looking at the pros and cons of public procurement from centrally negotiated framework contracts versus local procurement with the help of the KNUT service.

  • Foreign Acquisition, Wages and Productivity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The World Economy. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0378-5920 .- 1467-9701. ; 34:6, s. 931-951
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the effect of foreign acquisition on wages and total factor productivity (TFP) in the years following a takeover by using unique detailed firm-level data for Sweden for the period 1993–2002. The paper takes particular account of potential endogeneity of the acquisition decision (for example, due to ‘cherry picking’) by implementing an instrumental variable approach and propensity score matching with difference-in-difference estimation. Moreover, in line with the recent literature on firm heterogeneity and trade, this paper allows for the acquisition effect to differ depending on whether the targeted firms were domestic multinational or non-multinationals before the foreign takeover. This paper also allows for the acquisition effect to differ depending on whether the acquisition is horizontal or vertical. Our results show that foreign acquisition has no effects on overall, skilled or less-skilled wage growth, either in targeted Swedish MNEs or in targeted Swedish non-MNEs or if the acquisition was motivated by vertical or horizontal motives. However, the results indicate that both targeted Swedish MNEs and non-MNEs have better growth in TFP after vertical foreign acquisition only but no such impact from horizontal foreign acquisition.

  • Multinationals and plant survival
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Review of World Economics. - : Springer. - 1610-2878 .- 1610-2886. ; 146:4, s. 609-634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is twofold: first, to investigate how different ownership structures affect plant survival, and second, to analyze how the presence of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) affects domestic plants’ survival. Using a unique and detailed data set on the Swedish manufacturing sector, I am able to separate plants into those owned by foreign MNEs, domestic MNEs, exporting non-MNEs, and purely domestic firms. In line with previous findings, the result, when conditioned on other factors affecting survival, shows that foreign MNE plants have lower survival rates than non-MNE plants. However, separating the non-MNEs into exporters and non-exporters, the result shows that foreign MNE plants have higher survival rates than non-exporting non-MNEs, while the survival rates of foreign MNE plants and exporting non-MNE plants do not seem to differ. Moreover, the simple non-parametric estimates show that domestic MNE plants are more likely to exit the market than other plants, also when controlling for plant-specific differences. Finally, foreign presence in the market seems to have had a negative impact on the survival rate of plants in non-exporting non-MNEs, but not to have affected plants in exporting non-MNEs or plants in domestic MNEs.

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship – new themes for new times
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annals of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-7396 .- 2000-7396. ; 1:1, s. 1-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Throughout history, innovators and entrepreneurs have had a tremendous impact on development, exploration, trade, education, science, and integration. During the 20th century, innovation and entrepre-neurship have been regarded as key drivers in technological progress and productivity development worldwide. New radical innovations from new fields of knowledge such as information and communication technologies and biotechnology have emerged to influence everyday life for most people. Realizing this, policy makers as well as individuals argue that innovative and entrepreneurial change processes need to be further implemented on the micro as well as macro levels in society (Abouzeedan, Busler, & Hedner, 2009; Busenitz, Gomez, & Spencer, 2000). The study of innovation is therefore likely to be an increasingly important topic in, for example, economics, business, entrepreneurship, tech-nology, engineering, medicine, environmental biology, sociology, design, and reregional development (cf. Etzkowitz & Klofsten, 2005).

  • Trade-offs in make-buy decisions
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 17:3, s. 158-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the previous literature uses transaction cost economics and the resource-based view to theoretically derive the benefits of outsourcing, it has so far overlooked how these theoretical underpinnings must be used to assess trade-offs involved in make-buy decisions as well. This study investigates trade-offs in make-buy decisions for the buying firm. It takes an operations strategy perspective and links manufacturing firms competitive priorities to outsourcing motives and resulting capabilities. Survey data from a representative sample of 136 manufacturing plants in Sweden is subjected to regressions analysis. In contrast to earlier empirical research, this study shows that resulting capabilities of strategic outsourcing initiatives are distinct, and, furthermore, do not emerge cumulatively. This has important implications for the ongoing debate over trade-offs in the operations strategy literature. Findings are clearly in support of the trade-off model and extend current research into the theoretical domain of make-buy decisions.

  • F2C – An Innovative Approach to Use Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) for the Valuation of High-Technology Ventures
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Communications of the IBIMA. - : IBIMA Publishing. - 1943-7765 .- 1943-7765. ; 2011:Article ID 483882, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a novel method - F2C - that can process the only information available in the early stages of a young high-technology venture: linguistic expert knowledge. This knowledge is the basis for the determination of an appropriate discount rate for the valuation of high-technology ventures in early stages of venture capital investments. A specific tool named Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) is used therein to capture and depict the expert knowledge. Consequently, the FCM is transformed into a system of Fuzzy Inference Systems. These systems allow eventually obtaining a crisp value for the crucial parameter, the discount rate r. First practical applications were carried out valuing a biotechnology venture. The obtained results are promising, though the need for further research efforts became obvious.

  • Projects and politics : exploring the duality between action and politics in complex projects
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 11:2, s. 121-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional research and literature on project management and organisation theory tend to view project organisations as non-political bodies and purely action-oriented endeavours. In contrast, this paper presents an alternative analysis drawing on the idea of projects as political and emergent processes. Based on in-depth, case-study findings of a complex development and implementation project, we suggest an analytical framework that focuses on the interrelatedness of action and political processes and which explains how project management deals with the two processes simultaneously. We identify and analyse three separate but nested organisational logics applied by the project management team to cope with the dual challenges of politics and action. The general idea is to illustrate the notion of projects as emergent processes involving both politics and action. The three logics are: 1) balancing openness and closure; 2) reformulating tasks to seek solutions; 3) relating to improve action capacity. Our findings add to the literature on the role and practice of project management in complex projects that entail both stakeholder and technological challenges.
