  • Exploring the roles of university spin-offs in business networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 59, s. 157-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper identifies different university spin-off (USO) roles related to resource interaction among business parties. It does so by mapping how USOs become part of business networks in terms of their roles relative to other parties. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on roles and resource interaction based on an industrial network approach to business markets. The empirical research is based on five cases of USOs representing a variety in terms of technology, degree of newness, sector, and area of application. As a result of the analysis, three different roles are identified: the USO as resource mediator, resource re-combiner and resource renewer. These roles reflect how USOs adapt resources to, or require changes among, business parties' resources. The paper also discusses the main resource interfaces associated with the three roles and related challenges. The paper contributes to previous research through illustrating USOs' roles relative to business parties from a resource interaction point of view, and by pointing to the establishment of new companies in business networks as a way of implementing innovation. Finally, the paper discusses the managerial implications of the research in terms of the USO's need to understand which role to take and how to develop it.

  • Nourishment for the piggy bank : facilitation of external financing in incubators
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation. - : Inderscience. - 1470-6075 .- 1741-5284. ; 10 3-4, s. 354-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we argue that incubators facilitate access to external financing for their incubatees. Incubators use a wide range of activities to facilitate the accessing of external financing from public and private sources. We have grouped these into two sets of activities. The general activities aim to develop the conditions for external financing through information, education of incubatees, network-building and lobbying activities. The specific activities aim to assist the individual incubatee in their pursuit of external finance through help in application procedures, establishing need for capital, making contacts with the best public or private investor, etc. Based on the survey data, we have also shown that it is more common for incubatees to attract external capital compared to non-incubator firms. The incubatees seem especially successful in attracting public capital. The incubatees also attract more private external capital, however, the observed frequency of private capital in the incubatees are low.

  • Recombination studies in a polyfluorene copolymer for photovoltaic applications
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Synthetic Metals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0379-6779. ; 155:2, s. 299-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present detailed continuous wave (cw) and transient photoinduced absorption (PA) measurements in thin films of a novel alternating polyfluorene copolymer, poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene)-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3-benzo-thiadiazole)] (DiO-PFDTBT), and its blends with the sol. fullerene deriv. [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid Me ester (PCBM) in wt. ratios of 1:0, 4:1 and 1:4. We measure the frequency, intensity and temp. dependence of the PA signal in the frequency domain, and compare with the results obtained from the transient PA decay measurements in the time domain. In all blends, the PA spectrum shows a broad high energy PA band ranging from .apprx.1 eV to 2 eV as well as a low energy band peaking at .apprx.0.35 eV. We attribute the low energy band to the P1 transition of polarons and part of the high energy band to the correlated P2 transition of polarons. Both frequency and time domain measurements show that the high energy band has two decay components, a faster component in the microsecond time regime and a slower component in the millisecond time regime. The slow component is strongly dispersive, whereas the fast component is practically non-dispersive. [on SciFinder (R)]

  • Charge transport in InAs nanowire Josephson junctions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969 .- 1098-0121. ; 89:21, s. 214508-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an extensive experimental and theoretical study of the proximity effect in InAs nanowires connected to superconducting electrodes. We fabricate and investigate devices with suspended gate-controlled nanowires and nonsuspended nanowires, with a broad range of lengths and normal-state resistances. We analyze the main features of the current-voltage characteristics: the Josephson current, excess current, and subgap current as functions of length, temperature, magnetic field, and gate voltage, and compare them with theory. The Josephson critical current for a short-length device, L = 30 nm, exhibits a record high magnitude of 800 nA at low temperature that comes close to the theoretically expected value. The critical current in all other devices is typically reduced compared to the theoretical values. The excess current is consistent with the normal resistance data and agrees well with the theory. The subgap current shows a large number of structures; some of them are identified as subharmonic gap structures generated by multiple Andreev reflection. The other structures, detected in both suspended and nonsuspended devices, have the form of voltage steps at voltages that are independent of either the superconducting gap or length of the wire. By varying the gate voltage in suspended devices, we are able to observe a crossover from typical tunneling transport at large negative gate voltage, with suppressed subgap current and negative excess current, to pronounced proximity junction behavior at large positive gate voltage, with enhanced Josephson current and subgap conductance as well as a large positive excess current.

  • High Critical-Current Superconductor-InAs Nanowire-Superconductor Junctions
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 12:11, s. 5622-5625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the fabrication of InAs nanowires coupled to superconducting leads with high critical current and widely tunable conductance. We implemented a double lift off nanofabrication Method to get very short nanowire devices with Ohmic contacts. We observe very high critical. currents of up to 800 nA in a wire with a diameter of 80 nm. The current- voltage characteristics of longer and suspended nanowires display, either. Coulomb blockade or supercurrent depending on a local gate voltage, combining different regimes of transport in a single device.

  • Quantized Conductance and Its Correlation to the Supercurrent in a Nanowire Connected to Superconductors
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 13:8, s. 3614-3617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report conductance and supercurrent of InAs nano wires coupled to Al-superconducting electrodes with short channel lengths and good Ohmic contacts. The nanowires are suspended 15 nm above a local gate electrode. The charge density in the nanowires can be controlled by a small change in the gate voltage. For large negative gate voltages, the number of conducting channels is reduced gradually, and we observe a stepwise decrease of both conductance and critical current before the conductance vanishes completely.

  • Au-Pd Barcode Nanowires with Tailored Lattice Parameters and Segment Lengths for Catalytic Applications
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - 2574-0970. ; 7:4, s. 3861-3874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we present a systematic investigation of the controlled fabrication of Au-Pd barcode nanowires within nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (NP-AAO) templates. By using a combination of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we elucidate the influence of template preparation methods on the resulting nanowire properties. The template treatment, involving either pore widening or barrier layer thinning, significantly impacts nanowire growth. Through the analysis of the XRD data, we observe sequential deposition of Au and Pd segments with lattice parameter variations and strain effects. Particularly, the lattice parameters of Au and Pd segments display intricate temporal dependencies, influenced by interfacial effects and strain caused by growth under confinement. FIB-SEM imaging reveals uniform and reproducible nanowire lengths in the template treated with pore widening. Furthermore, TEM analysis confirms the presence of distinct Au and Pd segments, while scanning TEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed minor evidence of interdiffusion between the first and the second electrodeposited segments. Our findings emphasize the potential of the electrodeposition process within nanoporous templates for producing barcode nanowires with precise segmental properties. The combination of in situ XRD and electron microscopy offers valuable insights into the growth dynamics and structural characteristics of the fabricated Au-Pd barcode nanowires. This controlled fabrication strategy opens doors to tailoring nanowire properties for diverse applications, particularly in catalysis.

  • Hydride formation and dynamic phase changes during template-assisted Pd electrodeposition
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - 1361-6528 .- 0957-4484. ; 34:50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the structural evolution of electrochemically fabricated Pd nanowires in situ by means of grazing-incidence transmission small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering (GTSAXS and GTWAXS), x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and two-dimensional surface optical reflectance (2D-SOR). This shows how electrodeposition and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compete and interact during Pd electrodepositon. During the bottom-up growth of the nanowires, we show that beta-phase Pd hydride is formed. Suspending the electrodeposition then leads to a phase transition from beta-phase Pd hydride to alpha-phase Pd. Additionally, we find that grain coalescence later hinders the incorporation of hydrogen in the Pd unit cell. GTSAXS and 2D-SOR provide complementary information on the volume fraction of the pores occupied by Pd, while XRF was used to monitor the amount of Pd electrodeposited.

  • In situ microstructural evolution of spruce wood during soda pulping using synchrotron X-ray tomography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Holzforschung. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1437-434X .- 0018-3830. ; 76:7, s. 611-621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new laboratory reactor to perform in situ studies of structural changes in wood during soda pulping using synchrotron X-ray tomography is presented. The reactor is of recirculation type to provide stable reaction conditions and mimic the industrial situation. Experiments have been performed using this reactor in situ at a synchrotron microtomography beamline to provide sequences of 3D images from which measurement of wood cell wall thickness have been possible for the first time. The results showed that the cell wall thickness increased significantly in the early stage of pulping (<10 min), which is due to the transportation of cooking chemicals through the tracheids, resin channels and pits into the cell wall, which is swollen with the increased pH. Subsequently, the cell wall thickness reduces over the processing time up to 60 min with a high rate, which is inferred to be due to the dissolution and transport of lignin and hemicellulose from the secondary walls, allowing for better transportation of active chemicals deep through the cell wall layers. After 60 min processing, the cell wall thickness reduction rate reduced, as dissolution of lignin and hemicelluloses from the cell walls ceased, while the remaining dissolution occurs mainly at the middle lamella.
