  • Measuring frequency and accuracy of annual nitrous oxide emission estimates
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-1923. ; 310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate estimates of cumulative N2O fluxes from agricultural soil are essential for quantifying global N2O emissions and for identifying effective mitigation strategies. This study focuses on the short term temporal variability of N2O fluxes, and on how the accuracy of annual cumulative estimates is affected by different (simulated) measuring frequencies of an automatic system based on the closed chamber method. Fluxes were measured with high temporal resolution (24 per day) for approximately one year on agricultural soil in the southwest of Sweden. The short-term temporal variability of N2O fluxes was considerable: the predictive power of measured fluxes decreased to negligible levels in a time frame of 4-5 h, and large intraday flux ranges were observed frequently, particularly in days with soil temperatures below 0 degrees C. A time of day well suited for consistently providing good estimates of the mean daily flux could not be identified. Consequently, the accuracy of annual emission estimates strongly depended on the measuring frequency. Multiple measurements per day were necessary for consistently quantifying annual emission estimates with accuracy. Accuracy improved with measuring frequency increasing up to four times per day, and higher frequencies generated negligible further improvements. Based on this study the following recommendations are made with regard to measuring frequency: i) measure four times per day for maximum accuracy and ii) measure twice per day for a good compromise between accuracy and the number of plots that can be monitored.

  • Subjects' selection of feedback information in an inductive inference task
  • 1977
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lindberg, L-Å.,and Brehmer, B. Subjects' selection of feedback information in an inductive inference task. Umeå Psychological Reports No. 122, 1977. - Subjects' selection of outcome feedback instances in a probabilistic inference task with one linear and one nonlinear cue was investigated in a 2 (levels of task information: maximum vs. minimum) x 4 (blocks of trials) factorial experiment. Maximal information included the criterion distribution for each cue combination as well as aids for recording feedback instances, while minimal information consisted of standard instructions and no memory aids. Under both information conditions, subjects (1) examined one cue at a time, (2) gave priority to the more difficult quadratic cue, and (3) systematically changed their distribution and order of selections as a function of blocks. That is, subjects used the feedback infornation in a way that is not possible in the standard experimenter controlled reception paradigm. Furthermore, subjects made consequtive selections of the same cue combination more frequently in the maximum information condition that in the minimum information condition. These results are consistent with the assumptions that subjects under both conditions try to find the functional parameters of the task by means of a hypothesis testing activity, and that they learn to eliminate incorrect hypotheses with practice.

  • Comparison of mutual coupling compensation to dummy columns in adaptive antenna systems
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; 53:4, s. 1332-1336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compensation for mutual coupling in antenna arrays by matrix multiplication is compared to the use of dummy elements. A least squares estimation of the coupling matrix is made, including co- and cross-polar coupling. We show that compensation for measurements off the phase center is important as well as a proper assumption of the ideal element pattern. We study the performance of a dual polarized patch array with respect to far-field phase error, signal-to-interference reduction, and cross-polarization level. In all aspects, the performance of the compensation method exceeds or equals the use of dummy elements.

  • IL-1β mediates lung neutrophilia and IL-33 expression in a mouse model of viral-induced asthma exacerbation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Respiratory Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-9921 .- 1465-993X. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Viral-induced asthma exacerbations, which exhibit both Th1-type neutrophilia and Th2-type inflammation, associate with secretion of Interleukin (IL)-1β. IL-1β induces neutrophilic inflammation. It may also increase Th2-type cytokine expression. We hypothesised that IL-1β is causally involved in both Th1 and Th2 features of asthma exacerbations. This hypothesis is tested in our mouse model of viral stimulus-induced asthma exacerbation.METHOD: Wild-type (WT) and IL-1β deficient (IL-1β-/-) mice received house dust mite (HDM) or saline intranasally during three weeks followed by intranasal dsRNA (PolyI:C molecule known for its rhinovirus infection mimic) for three consecutive days to provoke exacerbation. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was analysed for inflammatory cells and total protein. Lung tissues were stained for neutrophilic inflammation and IL-33. Tissue homogenates were analysed for mRNA expression of Muc5ac, CXCL1/KC, TNF-α, CCL5, IL-25, TSLP, IL-33, IL-1β, CCL11 and CCL2 using RT-qPCR.RESULTS: Expression of IL-1β, neutrophil chemoattractants, CXCL1 and CCL5, the Th2-upstream cytokine IL-33, and Muc5ac were induced at exacerbation in WT mice and were significantly inhibited in IL-1β-/- mice at exacerbation. Effects of HDM alone were not reduced in IL-1β-deficient mice.CONCLUSION: Without being involved in the baseline HDM-induced allergic asthma, IL-1β signalling was required to induce neutrophil chemotactic factors, IL-33, and Muc5ac expression at viral stimulus-induced exacerbation. We suggest that IL-1β has a role both in neutrophilic and Th2 inflammation at viral-induced asthma exacerbations.

  • Restless legs symptoms with sleepiness in relation to mortality : 20-year follow-up study of a middle-aged Swedish population
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences. - : Wiley. - 1323-1316 .- 1440-1819. ; 62:4, s. 457-463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate restless legs symptoms with concomitant daytime sleepiness as a risk factor for mortality in a middle-aged population. Methods: A cohort of 5102 subjects aged 30–65 years in mid-Sweden who responded to a postal questionnaire in 1983 was followed up. The questionnaire included questions about restless legs symptoms, daytime sleepiness, demographic and lifestyle variables, sleep habits, medical conditions and depression. Mortality data for the period 1983–2003 were collected and death certificates were available for all the 657 responders who died during the follow-up period. Results: Restless legs symptoms with daytime sleepiness was reported by 10.3% and was associated with shorter night sleep time, several health problems and depression. During the follow-up period 379 men (21.6%) and 278 women (15.5%) died. A multivariate model adjusted for age, short night sleep time, lifestyle factors, medical conditions and depression showed that women reporting restless legs symptoms with daytime sleepiness had an excess mortality compared to women without restless legs symptoms and daytime sleepiness (hazard ratios, 1.85; 95% confidence interval, 1.20–2.85; P = 0.005). No influence on mortality risk was found in men reporting restless legs symptoms with daytime sleepiness. Conclusions: The occurrence of restless legs symptoms with daytime sleepiness in middle-aged women is associated with increased mortality risk.
