  • In-cylinder CFD simulation using a C++ object-oriented toolkit
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. - 0148-7191.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Successful simulation of fluid flow, heat transfer, fuel injection and combustion in internal combustion engines involves a spectrum of physical models operating in a complex 3-D geometry with moving boundaries. The models are formulated in the Eulerian and Lagrangian framework and interact in complex ways. In this paper, we present FOAM, an object-oriented software toolkit designed to facilitate research in physical modelling by separating the handling of physics from numerical discretisation techniques. This is achieved by mimicking in the code the continuum mechanics equations of the physical model. Complex mesh handling, choice of numerics and the simulation efficiency are handled transparently. Capabilities of the toolkit are demonstrated on two in-cylinder combustion simulations.

  • Investigation of the two-phase flow field of the GTX100 compressor inlet during off-line washing
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ASME Turbo Expo 2004: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. - 0791841693 ; 4, s. 509-518
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A modern gas turbine compressor, with its highly aerodynamically loaded blades, is sensitive to changes in profile shape and to surface roughness. Fouling is inevitable, despite highly efficient filtration systems. The remedy to this problem is washing. There are two different approaches, online or off-line washing. The off-line wash is the most effective one, whilst on-line washing only prolongs the interval between off-line washes. Most findings in this field are highly empirical, being based on some 50 years of industrial gas turbine operation. This paper is an investigation of the two-phase flow in the bellmouth of the compressor during off-line washing conditions. The unit under study was the GTX100 turbo-set. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used in this paper to perform a detailed study of the flow field. The main emphasis has been on studying the characteristics of the injected spray used for cleaning of the compressor. The benefit of heating this fluid is of special interest, since if this heating can be avoided, the outage time for the off-line compressor wash can be shortened. To provide the CFD computations with accurate boundary conditions for the spray, laser-based measurements of a spray, originating from an authentic wash nozzle, have been conducted. The commercial CFD program Star-Cd has been used for all computations. The computations show that the water injected, regardless of its inlet temperature, is cooled down to ambient air temperature well before the spray reaches the inlet guide vanes. This indicates that heating of the wash fluid can be abolished. The airflow seems not to be to influenced by the injected fluid to any great extend.

  • Chalmers Environmental Initiative Progress Report 2001
  • 2001
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Board of the Chalmers University of TechnologyFoundation decided in 1999 to invest SEK 100million in a strategic investment in the environmentwith a special focus on environmental systems analysis. This investment was entitled The ChalmersEnvironmental Initiative (CEI). Through thisenvironmental initiative Chalmers has acquired aprominent international position within environmentalsystems analysis.CEI is the result of the active research and educationthat has taken place at Chalmers over the past 10years. A broad base in combination with leadingedge technology presented the opportunity to createa very strong research programme based oninteraction between the various schools at Chalmers. As CEI is integrated into undergraduate anddoctoral programmes at Chalmers, engineers, architects and doctoral students have access, withinthe framework of their studies, to research-basedenvironmental education with a focus on asustainable society. CEI also co-operates with otherparties, such as industry, politicians, various organisationsand the general public, as a further means ofcontributing to sustainable development in society.Within CEI, seven new professors have beenappointed within the following areas:Management for SustainabilityRolf Wolff, 1 June 2000Environmental Systems TechnologyAnne-Marie Tillman, 1 September 2000Sustainable Industrial MetabolismChristian Azar, 1 September 2000Global Environmental MeasurementsDonal Murtagh, 1 November 2000Green ChemistryWilliam J. Frederick Jr, 1 August 2001Sustainable Energy SystemsFilip Johnsson, preliminary 1 October 2001Design for Sustainable Urban DevelopmentVacant: interviews during April 2001The four professors appointed in 2000 are presentedin this report as well as their declaration of intentfor the next few years. At present, the CEI professorsare involved with approximately 40 universities, institutes and industrial partners in the form ofproject co-operation and joint publications. The fourprofessors have the greater proportion of theirenvironmental research funded through externalgrants, compared to CEI. The proportion of facultyfunds and other internal Chalmers funds is at presentvery low. A summary of the financing structureis also included in this report.During 2001, various forms of co-operation wereinitiated between the professors, such as joint projectplans, doctoral students, courses and graduateschools. During autumn 2001, a residential seminaris planned for discussions within CEI as well as anopen presentation of the project and the professors. This major in-house focus on environmental researchhas attracted attention externally and contributedto the opening up of new potential in combinationwith increased expectations. Since May 1, 2000,Chalmers has been a member of the Alliance forGlobal Sustainability (AGS), an association of someof the world’s foremost universities in theenvironmental field. AGS and other platforms formthe basis for international research collaboration.CEI and other environmental activities have led tospin-off effects and contributed to increased interestin Chalmers as an environmental university.Chalmers and Göteborg University were, forexample, jointly awarded the King Carl XVI Gustafvisiting professorship in environmental science for2001-2002 and Margot Wallström received anhonorary doctorate from Chalmers in 2001. A largenumber of well-known environmental researchershave also visited Chalmers to take part inconferences and seminars, including the winners ofthe Volvo Environmental Award for 2000 and thewinner of the City of Göteborg InternationalEnvironmental Award for 2000.

  • Sound Generated by an Unsteady Flow Field, Using a Hybrid Method
  • 2004. - 1
  • Ingår i: Modelling Fluid Flow. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer-Verlag. - 9783662087978 ; , s. 169-178
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The compressible Navier-Stokes equations describe both flow field as well as sound generation. The classical acoustic theory uses the hypothesis that the part of the flow field, which is the source of the acoustic field, has distinct scales so that the acoustic waves do not interfere with the flow. Thus, the velocity vector, the pressure and the density are split into semi-compressible components and an inviscid, irrotational acoustical components. The paper includes the details of the coupling between the turbulent flow (based on Large Eddy Simulation) and the acoustical part (based on Lighthill's acoustic analogy). The approach is applied to the acoustics of a non-isothermal jet.

  • 6DOF metrology-integrated robot control
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Paper Series. - Montreal, QC, Canada : Society of Automotive Engineers. - 0148-7191.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes ongoing research into Metrology-integrated robot control. The research is a part of an ongoing EU funded aircraft industry project – ADFAST*. The ADFAST project tries to implement the use of industrial robots in low-volume production, high-demand-on-accuracy operations and for dynamic force compensation. To detect and compensate deflection in industrial robots during a process, the robot uses a metrology system. The metrology system supervises the tool center point of the robot as it executes its processes. Leica has recently released a new metrology system; the LTD800, which measures distances with laser interferometry and can simultaneously measure orientation of targets, through photogrammetry, using an additional camera on top of the measuring unit. This paper will describe theory and results from tests performed on integrating the LTD800 with the robot.

  • The flight perturbation problem : operational aircraft rescheduling
  • 2001
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When there is a perturbation in a carefully planned flight schedule, e.g. an aircraft breakdown, it is important to minimize the negative consequences of this disturbance. In this thesis, a model and a number of solution strategies for the Flight Perturbation Problem is presented. Based on a connection network, a mixed integer multicommodity flow model with side constraints is developed. Cancellations, delays and aircraft swaps, both within the same fleet and between different aircraft types, are used to take care of the perturbation. The model also assures that the schedule returns to normal within a certain time.Six different solution strategies arc used to solve the model; the first based on a Lagrangian relaxation of the mixed integer multicommodity flow model. Four strategies are based on Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and in two of them all feasible points are generated by a tree search algorithm before the master problem is solved, while the other two are column generation based. The last strategy is based on the metaheuristic tabu search. The computational tests with real problem data show that the Dantzig-Wolfe based strategies and the tabu search strategy arc very promising, and especially the tabu search strategies could be used in a real problem application that could provide airlines with solutions to complex perturbation problems.

  • Polar mesosphere summer echoes during the July 2000 solar proton event
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 22:3, s. 759-771
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of the solar proton event (SPE) 14-16 July 2000 on Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) is examined. PMSE were observed by the Esrange VHF MST Radar (ESRAD) at 67°53'N, 21°06'E. The 30MHz Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies IRIS in Kilpisjärvi (69°30'N, 20°47'E) registered cosmic radio noise absorption caused by ionisation changes in response to the energetic particle precipitation. An energy deposition/ion-chemical model was used to estimate the density of free electrons and ions in the upper atmosphere. Particle collision frequencies were calculated from the MSISE-90 model. Electric fields were calculated using conductivities from the model and measured magnetic disturbances. The electric field reached a maximum of 91mV/m during the most intensive period of the geomagnetic storm accompanying the SPE. The temperature increase due to Joule and particle heating was calculated, taking into account radiative cooling. The temperature increase at PMSE heights was found to be very small. The observed PMSE were rather intensive and extended over the 80-90km height interval. PMSE almost disappeared above 86km at the time of greatest Joule heating on 15 July 2000. Neither ionisation changes, nor Joule/particle heating can explain the PMSE reduction. Transport effects due to the strong electric field are a more likely explanation.
