  • Female immigrant entrepreneurship : Exploring international entrepreneurship through the status of Indian women entrepreneurs in Japan
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - : Emerald. - 1756-6266 .- 1756-6274. ; 3:1, s. 38-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to explore how entrepreneurial opportunities are used by the rapidly increasing immigrant Indian female population in Japan. Given that a majority of Indian women are housewives and grew up in conservative family backgrounds, this analysis seeks to provide an insight into the situations that aided them and the challenges they faced in their entrepreneurial business ventures far from home.Design/methodology/approachThe paper takes the form of a case study analysis through a semi‐structured questionnaire designed on the concept of “Life cycle of minority owned businesses” to track enterprise activity from beginning to end.FindingsThe analyses show that although respondents began their stay in Japan as housewives, they shed their image with time, used their talents and diversified into a different role without sacrificing family duties, while also creating employment opportunities for both natives and immigrants. Major hindrances faced due to socio/cultural influences, lack of government initiatives and support facilities were identified.Research limitations/implicationsThe research analysis has been done on three case studies only as most available respondents were in the birth phase of their enterprises. More research is required on issues like capital availability, native employee and ethnic owner relationships, legal challenges and institutional support.Practical implicationsThe paper draws attention to problem areas where changes in governance structure and social acceptance can create a more viable environment for immigrant entrepreneurs in Japan.Originality/valueTo the best of the author's knowledge, this study is the first of its kind that explores and evaluates the status of Indian female immigrant entrepreneurs in Japan. As Indian immigrants in entrepreneurial activities in Japan are increasing every year, the paper can contribute in restructuring opportunity creation and facilitate maximum advantage.

  • Female immigrant entrepreneurship : a developing sector in Japan's entrepreneurial economy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship. - 1084-9467. ; 15:2, s. 165-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of women in Japan was traditionally restricted to housekeeping and childrearing. Over the years, changes in Japanese lifestyle and attitudes have created new grounds for women to venture into small businesses. Although this new personality aspect of women has been accepted, by and large, in larger cities of Japan, it is yet to be accepted in rural areas. Given this background, it becomes even more challenging for a foreigner — an immigrant woman entrepreneur — to set up shop and conduct business in Japan. This study looks at the status of female immigrant entrepreneurs in Japan. Through a qualitative study, it explores the experiences and challenges female entrepreneurs must face before they achieve stability in their businesses. It highlights and draws attention to areas where changes in governance structure and social acceptance can be made so a more positive environment can be built up and the relationship between Japan and the immigrant entrepreneurs can be strengthened.

  • An Island Biogeographical Approach to Island Tourism and Biodiversity : An Exploratory Study of the Caribbean and Pacific Islands
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1094-1665 .- 1741-6507. ; 15:3, s. 383-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Islands are especially susceptible to the loss of indigenous species following anthropogenic change. Although tourism has long been cited as a justification for conserving biodiversity via the establishment of national parks and reserves, it also contributes to biodiversity loss as a result of direct habitat change and human activities, as well as more indirectly via the introduction of exotic species and environmental change. An island biogeographical approach is used to provide an exploratory analysis of tourism and biodiversity relationships in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands. Data suggest that the islands are under heavy anthropogenic pressure, of which tourism is just one element, although for some countries tourism represents a substantial real increase in the size of the human population. Few of the countries examined have anywhere near the recommended percentage of area protected, with marine ecosystems being least conserved. The study concludes that there are significant data gaps for examining tourism and biodiversity relations at the national level, but suggests that island biogeographical approaches may yield significant insights into the pressures of tourism on biodiversity at smaller scales if adequate data can be gained.

  • The Effect of Corporate Governance on Stock Repurchases: Evidence from Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Corporate governance. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-8410 .- 1467-8683. ; 18:5, s. 457-472
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manuscript Type: EmpiricalResearch Question/Issue: The paper examines whether corporate governance differences affect firms' stock repurchasing behavior. Previous hypotheses on stock repurchases, well-supported by US data, are based on assumptions of managerial autonomy that might not be descriptive in corporate governance systems characterized by influential controlling shareholders such as the Swedish. Firm-level corporate governance arrangements may also affect firms' incentives to repurchase stock.Research Findings/Insights: Stock-repurchasing patterns among Swedish firms differ from those previously observed among US firms. The findings indicate that Swedish firms do not repurchase stock to distribute excess cash, signal undervaluation, or fend off takeovers. Stock repurchases are made in addition to dividends and thus do not substitute for them. Firm-level corporate governance arrangements directly affect stock repurchasing behavior. Firms without a dominant controlling owner seem to use stock repurchases to increase leverage. The existence of a dominant controlling shareholder diminishes the propensity for stock repurchases, while cross listing on a US or UK stock market increases that propensity.Theoretical/Academic Implications: The findings suggest that corporate governance differences affect stock repurchasing behavior. The agency-theoretical view of the firm, on which the leading hypotheses on stock repurchases are based, accurately predicts stock repurchases only in certain institutional and governance settings.Practitioner/Policy Implications: The study suggests that differences in national and firm-level corporate governance must be taken into account in order to accurately assess outcomes of regulatory reforms and/or harmonization attempts.

  • Den värdefulla ekonomen : en rapport om resurstilldelningen: en jämförelse med Danmark, Norge och Finland
  • 2010
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Swedish higher education should be managed in a manner that secures high quality in both education and in research. A fundamental condition for acquiring such goals lies in the resources allotted to the educational institutions. The main purpose of this report is to investigate the relative resource allocation between higher education in economics and business administration within four Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland). Within all four Nordic countries, the resource allocation for higher education in economics and business administration will be juxtaposed with the resource allocation for higher education in technology. The analysis shows that Sweden allocates 36 519 SEK per year and student within higher education for economics and business administration (compared with 82 531 SEK per year and student in higher education in technology and engineering). By setting the resource allocation of technical higher education against higher education in economics and business administration, it was found that the Swedish and Danish resource allocation systems showed high discrepancies, while the Norwegian and Finnish resource allocation systems showed low discrepancies. The Swedish resource allocation system proved to be one of low amount of allocation to higher education in economics and business administration and with high amounts of discrepancy between higher education in technology and economics and business administration. In ascending order, Finland (12 % above), Denmark (32 % above) and Norway (77 % above) all allocate resources above the levels in Sweden when it comes to the higher education in economics and business administration. The main proposition in this paper, presented firstly in the report, includes tentative causalities between allocated resources and ‘contact time’ is advanced. By assuming that the current situation between resource allocation and contact time between teachers and students are optimal and that there exists a causality between the two, this report argues for an increase of 43 % in regards of the resources to students within higher education in economics and business administration: from the current 36 519 SEK to 52 170 SEK.
