  • ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk : an overluminous Type IIb supernova from a massive progenitor
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 503:3, s. 3472-3491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk is a newly discovered member of the rare group of luminous, hydrogen-rich supernovae (SNe) with a peak absolute magnitude of M-V approximate to -20 mag that is in between normal core-collapse SNe and superluminous SNe. These SNe show no prominent spectroscopic signatures of ejecta interacting with circumstellar material (CSM), and their powering mechanism is debated. ASASSN-18am declines extremely rapidly for a Type II SN, with a photospheric-phase decline rate of similar to 6.0 mag (100 d)(-1). Owing to the weakening of H I and the appearance of He I in its later phases, ASASSN-18am is spectroscopically a Type IIb SN with a partially stripped envelope. However, its photometric and spectroscopic evolution shows significant differences from typical SNe IIb. Using a radiative diffusion model, we find that the light curve requires a high synthesized Ni-56 mass M-Ni similar to 0.4 M-circle dot and ejecta with high kinetic energy E-kin = (7-10) x 10(51) erg. Introducing a magnetar central engine still requires M-Ni similar to 0.3 M-circle dot and E-kin = 3 x 10(51) erg. The high Ni-56 mass is consistent with strong iron-group nebular lines in its spectra, which are also similar to several SNe Ic-BL with high Ni-56 yields. The earliest spectrum shows 'flash ionization' features, from which we estimate a mass-loss rate of (M) over dot approximate to 2 x 10(-4 )M(circle dot) yr(-1). This wind density is too low to power the luminous light curve by ejecta-CSM interaction. We measure expansion velocities as high as 17 000 km s(-1) for H alpha, which is remarkably high compared to other SNe II. We estimate an oxygen core mass of 1.8-3.4 M-circle dot using the [O I] luminosity measured from a nebular-phase spectrum, implying a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 19-26 M-circle dot.

  • Falls from Tractors in Older Age : Risky Behaviors in a Group of Swedish and Italian Farmers Over 65
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 20th Congress of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA 2018). : Aging, Gender and Work, Anthropometry, Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments - Aging, Gender and Work, Anthropometry, Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319960654 - 9783319960647 ; , s. 78-86, s. 78-86
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The frequent mounting and dismounting the tractor required by many farming operations increases the risk of falls, particularly for older farmers. The present study explored the risk factors related to tractor ingress and egress in older farmers from two countries with a different tradition in terms of safety culture: Sweden and Italy. Eighteen male farmers aged 65 + (8 from Skåne region, southern Sweden, and 10 from Piedmont region, northwestern Italy) were observed while mounting and dismounting their most used tractor, to investigate the routine behaviors adopted and to identify possible sources of risk of fall. The presence of three critical behaviors was recorded: the maintenance of three-point contact with the machine when entering and exiting the cab; facing the cab and the use of the last step when exiting. Farmers were also interviewed about their health status, attitudes toward safety, and perceived risks while performing the task. The results showed that similar unsafe behaviors were adopted by most of both Swedish and Italian participants; in particular, none of the farmers got off the tractor by facing the cab. Older farmers from both countries referred to age and previous experience as the major protective factors against falls, without acknowledging that new risks can rise from the age-related changes in their motor skills. The results raised some considerations about the need to develop targeted elderly-centered solutions to support the correct mounting/dismounting behaviors, both in the design of the machines and in information campaigns and training courses, which may have a cross-cultural validity.

  • AT 2017be-a new member of the class of intermediate-luminosity red transients
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 480:3, s. 3424-3445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of our spectrophotometric monitoring campaign for AT 2017be in NGC 2537. Its light curve reveals a fast rise to an optical maximum, followed by a plateau lasting about 30 d, and finally a fast decline. Its absolute peak magnitude (M-r similar or equal to -12 mag) is fainter than that of core-collapse supernovae, and is consistent with those of supernova impostors and other intermediate-luminosity optical transients. The quasi-bolometric light-curve peaks at similar to 2 x 10(40) erg s(-1), and the late-time photometry allows us to constrain an ejected Ni-56 mass of similar to 8 x 10(-4)M(circle dot). The spectra of AT 2017 be show minor evolution over the observational period, a relatively blue continuum showing at early phases, which becomes redder with time. A prominent H alpha emission line always dominates over other Balmer lines. Weak Fe II features, Can H&K, and the Ca II NIR triplet are also visible, while P-Cygni absorption troughs are found in a high-resolution spectrum. In addition, the [Ca II] lambda lambda 7291, 7324 doublet is visible in all spectra. This feature is typical of intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), similar to SN 2008S. The relatively shallow archival Spitzer data are not particularly constraining. On the other hand, a non-detection in deeper near-infrared HST images disfavours a massive Luminous Blue Variable eruption as the origin for AT 2017be. As has been suggested for other ILRTs, we propose that AT 2017be is a candidate for a weak electron-capture supernova explosion of a superasymptotic giant branch star, still embedded in a thick dusty envelope.

  • Forbidden hugs in pandemic times III. Observations of the luminous red nova AT 2021biy in the nearby galaxy NGC 4631
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an observational study of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT 2021biy in the nearby galaxy NGC 4631. The field of the object was routinely imaged during the pre-eruptive stage by synoptic surveys, but the transient was detected only at a few epochs from ∼231 days before maximum brightness. The LRN outburst was monitored with unprecedented cadence both photometrically and spectroscopically. AT 2021biy shows a short-duration blue peak, with a bolometric luminosity of ∼1.6 × 1041 erg s−1, followed by the longest plateau among LRNe to date, with a duration of 210 days. A late-time hump in the light curve was also observed, possibly produced by a shell-shell collision. AT 2021biy exhibits the typical spectral evolution of LRNe. Early-time spectra are characterised by a blue continuum and prominent H emission lines. Then, the continuum becomes redder, resembling that of a K-type star with a forest of metal absorption lines during the plateau phase. Finally, late-time spectra show a very red continuum (TBB ≈ 2050 K) with molecular features (e.g., TiO) resembling those of M-type stars. Spectropolarimetric analysis indicates that AT 2021biy has local dust properties similar to those of V838 Mon in the Milky Way Galaxy. Inspection of archival Hubble Space Telescope data taken on 2003 August 3 reveals a ∼20 M⊙ progenitor candidate with log (L/L⊙) = 5.0 dex and Teff = 5900 K at solar metallicity. The above luminosity and colour match those of a luminous yellow supergiant. Most likely, this source is a close binary, with a 17–24 M⊙ primary component.

  • Intermediate-luminosity red transients : Spectrophotometric properties and connection to electron-capture supernova explosions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN 2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between −11.5 and −14.5 mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range 0.5–9.0 × 1040 erg s−1 and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3–3) × 1047 erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the 56Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce 56Ni masses on the order of 10−4 to 10−3 M⊙. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km s−1, along with Ca II features. In particular, the [Ca II] λ7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN 2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events.

  • Crimes Against Animal Production : Exploring the use of Media Archives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Criminal Justice Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 1057-5677 .- 1556-3855. ; 31:4, s. 384-404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish media have revealed an increase in crimes against animal production (CAAP) in the last decade. We investigate the nature of such crimes (especially against mink, pig, and rabbit farms), with a focus on those crimes whose suspects are animal rights groups by utilizing data from media archives from 2009 to 2019. Newspaper articles show that while vandalism and trespassing are often committed against mink farms, property crimes occur more often against pig and rabbit farms. Because there are indications that crime suspects are not a homogeneous group and express different motivations to commit CAAP, a multipronged approach is needed to prevent CAAP. The use of newspaper articles from media archives has proven to be successful for obtaining a general perspective of CAAP, but it is limited for capturing crime incidence or for investigating CAAP spatiotemporal nature when using geographical information systems. The automated usage of digital media archives should be further explored and critically assessed in future research in criminology.

  • Farmers, Victimization, and Animal Rights Activism in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Professional Geographer. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0033-0124 .- 1467-9272. ; , s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflicts between animal production and animal rights activism are becoming more common in a number of countries, including Sweden. Although most animal rights advocates would not consider committing a crime, there have been numerous accounts in which farmers have been victimized because they are animal producers. This study investigates the extent and characteristics of crimes committed against animal farmers and their families. The analysis is based on answers from a survey of 3,815 animal farmers in Sweden in 2020. Cross-table analysis, logistic regression models, and geographical information systems (GIS) underlie the methodology of the study. One in eight respondents declared being exposed to crimes because they are animal producers (from thefts, trespassing, sabotage, and threats to physical violence, most face-to-face but also online), but 60 percent of the victims never report to the police. Among nonvictims, half of the respondents knew someone who had been a victim of crime. Findings indicate that farmers’ victimization for theft or robbery show different motivations than those that are directed at them because they work with animal production. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating farmers’ safety needs into sustainable rural development policies.

  • Impacts and coping mechanisms of farmers as victims by animal rights activism in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0192-4036 .- 2157-6475. ; , s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigate whether fear of animal rights activism has animpact on farmers and, more specifically, critically assess farmers’ agencyby showing ways they cope with this fear. The analysis is based onanswers from a survey of 3,815 animal farmers in Sweden in 2020. Chisquareanalyses, logistic regression models, and Geographical InformationSystems (GIS) underlie the methodology of the study. Fear of animal rightsactivism is perceived by farmers as having a negative impact on theirchildren’s wellbeing, their economic situation, and their quality of life andhaving led to reduced trust in strangers. While a fifth of respondentsdeclare they protect themselves against criminal acts, we discuss possiblereasons farmers prefer not to take action against potential threats.

  • The Nature of Fear Among Farmers Working with Animal Production
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Criminology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2662-9976 .- 2662-9968.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we investigate the nature of fear among farmers working with animal production with particular focus on the impact of harassment and crimes linked to animal rights activism. The study is based on responses from 3815 animal farmers to a national survey in 2020 in Sweden. Cross-table analysis and logistic regression models underlie the methodology of the study. Findings show that three out of ten of those farmers feel afraid of being victimized by the actions of animal rights activists; the proportion is two-thirds among farmers with previous experience of victimization, and fear of victimization varies across Sweden and by type of activity. Perceived lack of support from the police, exacerbated by geographical isolation, are common determinants of farmers’ declared fear, particularly those whose families live on the farms and who have employees. While understanding the factors that affect farmers’ safety perceptions is important, the article ends by calling for further research on the ways by which fear of animal activism impacts farmers’ personal lives, those of their family and employees, and not least their livelihood.
