  • Tethered Small-Molecule Acceptors Simultaneously Enhance the Efficiency and Stability of Polymer Solar Cells

    • For polymer solar cells (PSCs), the mixture of polymer donors and small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) is fine-tuned to realize a favorable kinetically trapped morphology and thus a commercially viable device efficiency. However, the thermodynamic relaxation of the mixed domains within the blend raises concerns related to the long-term operational stability of the devices, especially in the record-holding Y-series SMAs. Here, a new class of dimeric Y6-based SMAs tethered with differential flexible spacers is reported to regulate their aggregation and relaxation behavior. In their polymer blends with PM6, it is found that they favor an improved structural order relative to that of Y6 counterpart. Most importantly, the tethered SMAs show large glass transition temperatures to suppress the thermodynamic relaxation in mixed domains. For the high-performing dimeric blend, an unprecedented open circuit voltage of 0.87 V is realized with a conversion efficiency of 17.85%, while those of regular Y6-base devices only reach 0.84 V and 16.93%, respectively. Most importantly, the dimer-based device possesses substantially reduced burn-in efficiency loss, retaining more than 80% of the initial efficiency after operating at the maximum power point under continuous illumination for 700 h. The tethering approach provides a new direction to develop PSCs with high efficiency and excellent operating stability.

  • The origin of anomalous hydrogen occupation in high entropy alloys

    • Metal hydrogen storage materials have been the focus of intensive research in the field of hydrogen-based economy. An outstanding question is that the number of hydrogen atoms accommodated in metal hydrides is generally much below the number of interstices, which limits their hydrogen storage capacities. Unlike traditional FCC metal hydrides where hydrogen can only occupy tetrahedral interstices, this study demonstrates that hydrogen can also occupy octahedral interstices in FCC high entropy alloy (HEA) hydrides, which leads to the violation of the Switendick criterion. For Ti25V25Nb25Ta25 and Ti25V25Nb25Zr25 HEAs, nearly 20% and 17.5% of octahedral interstices can be occupied by hydrogen, respectively. The anomalous hydrogen occupation mainly originates from the intrinsic electron delocalization between hydrogen atoms in HEA hydrides, which presents a sharp contrast to traditional metal hydrides. Such electron delocalization decreases repulsive interactions between hydrogens and promotes the electron localization at octahedral interstices. Additionally, this study reveals that hydrogen occupation at octahedral interstices enhances the structural disordering and decreases the thermal stability of HEA hydrides, which will be beneficial to reduce the dehydrogenation temperature. The presented results may provide a new strategy for the design of high-density storage materials.

    • We propose a general method, known as acoustic surface transformation (AST), to design novel acoustic devices and study the realization of such devices by using naturally available materials in broadband acoustic frequencies. All devices designed by AST only need one anisotropic homogeneous acoustic-null material (ANM). We design the ANM by exploiting natural material-based metal-fluid structures and verify that by numerical simulation. Unlike traditional methods, no complicated mathematical calculations are needed. We only need to design the geometrical shapes of the input and output surfaces of the devices. The proposed method will pave a new road for future acoustic design.

    • This paper focuses on the design of continuous phase-modulated systems and simplified receiver for high-mobility wireless communications. A class of spectrally efficient coded modulation systems is proposed and analyzed in terms of Euclidean distance and spectral efficiency. Moreover, the simplified detector based on mismatched receiver is designed to reduce the detection complexity exponentially for partial response systems. To deal with the fast time-varying channels without channel state information, a class of noncoherent detection algorithms for continuous phase modulation systems is developed to offer near-coherent performance. The proposed system is assessed over both the additive white Gaussian noise and fast-fading channels. Numerical and simulated results show that the proposed system offers not only high spectral efficiency but also near-optimum performance over fast time-varying scenarios.

    • Research on the interference influence of Intentional EMI (IEMI) in an electrical network is important to assure its working reliability. In this paper, a propagation model of disturbances in an electrical network, which consists of both galvanically connected systems and wireless systems, is established based on the Transmission Line Theory and the Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equation approach. The propagation model is a straight forward analytical approach and is applied on a certain network, and the responses (voltages and electrical fields) are obtained for each load (galvanic or wireless) located in the network. The response proportions for galvanic and wireless parts are presented.

  • An Efficient Method for Solving Frequency Responses of Power-Line Networks

    • This paper presents a novel approach for solving the frequency responses of a powerline network, which is a two-parallel-conductor system with multiple junctions and branches. By correcting the reflection coefficient and transmission coefficient of each junction, a complex network can be decomposed into several, single-junction, units. Based on the Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equation, we preliminarily propose the calculation method of frequency responses for single-junction network. In accordance with the direction of power transfer, we calculate the frequency responses of loads connected to each junction sequentially, from the perspective of the network structure. This approach greatly simplifies the computational complexity of the network frequency responses. To verify the proposed algorithm, networks with various numbers of junctions and branches are investigated, and the results are compared with a commercial electromagnetic simulator based on the topology. The analytical results agree well with the simulated ones.

  • Antiviral Disaccharide Lead Compounds against SARS-CoV-2 through Computer-Aided High-Throughput Screen

    • SARS-CoV-2 infects human epithelial cells through specific interaction with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). In addition, heparan sulfate proteoglycans act as the attachment factor to promote the binding of viral spike protein receptor binding domain (RBD) to ACE2 on host cells. Though the rapid development of vaccines has contributed significantly to preventing severe disease, mutated SARS-CoV-2 strains, especially the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, show increased affinity of RBD binding to ACE2, leading to immune escape. Thus, there is still an unmet need for new antiviral drugs. In this study, we constructed pharmacophore models based on the spike RBD of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and performed virtual screen for best-hit compounds from our disaccharide library. Screening of 96 disaccharide structures identified two disaccharides that displayed higher binding affinity to RBD in comparison to reported small molecule antiviral drugs. Further, screening PharmMapper demonstrated interactions of the disaccharides with a number of inflammatory cytokines, suggesting a potential for disaccharides with multiple-protein targets.
