- A recently proposed congestion control algorithm (CCA) called BBR (Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time) has shown a lot of promise in avoiding some of the problems that have plagued loss-based CCAs. Nevertheless, deployment of a new alternative algorithm requires a thorough evaluation of the effect of the proposed alternative on established transport protocols like TCP CUBIC. Furthermore, evaluations that consider the heterogeneity of Internet traffic sizes would provide a useful insight into the deployability of an algorithm that introduces sweeping changes across multiple algorithm components. Yet, most evaluations of BBR's impact and competitive fairness have focused on the steady-state performance of large flows. This work expands on previous studies of BBR by evaluating BBR's impact when the traffic consists of flows of different sizes. Our experiments show that under certain circumstances BBR's startup phase can result in a significant reduction of the throughput of competing large CUBIC flows and the utilization of the bottleneck link. In addition, the steady-state operation of BBR can have negative impact on the performance of bursty flows using loss-based CCAs over bottlenecks with buffer sizes as high as two times the bandwidth-delay product.

Seeing Beyond Your Nose? The Effects of Lifelong Olfactory Sensory Deprivation on Cerebral Audio-visual Integration

- Lifelong auditory and visual sensory deprivation have been demonstrated to alter both perceptual acuity and the neural processing of remaining senses. Recently, it was demonstrated that individuals with anosmia, i.e. complete olfactory sensory deprivation, displayed enhanced multisensory integration performance. Whether this ability is due to a reorganization of olfactory processing regions to focus on cross-modal multisensory information or whether it is due to enhanced processing within multisensory integration regions is not known. To dissociate these two outcomes, we investigated the neural processing of dynamic audio-visual stimuli in individuals with congenital anosmia and matched controls (both groups, n = 33) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Specifically, we assessed whether the previously demonstrated multisensory enhancement is related to cross-modal processing of multisensory stimuli in olfactory associated regions, the piriform and olfactory orbitofrontal cortices, or enhanced multisensory processing in established multisensory integration regions, the superior temporal and intraparietal sulci. No significant group differences were found in the a priori hypothesized regions using region of interest analyses. However, exploratory whole-brain analysis suggested higher activation related to multisensory integration within the posterior superior temporal sulcus, in close proximity to the multisensory region of interest, in individuals with congenital anosmia. No group differences were demonstrated in olfactory associated regions. Although results were outside our hypothesized regions, combined, they tentatively suggest that enhanced processing of audio-visual stimuli in individuals with congenital anosmia may be mediated by multisensory, and not primary sensory, cerebral regions.

- The Socioeconomic Impact of Truffle Cultivation in Rural Spain. Commercial black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) plantations have been promoted in Europe with the intention of benefiting rural economies while conserving biodiversity through the expansion of oak woodlands. In this context, a socioeconomic study was conducted around the town of Sarrion in eastern Spain, where government subsidies have supported oak reforestation and truffle cultivation in unproductive hilly areas since 1987. Currently there are about 4,500 ha of truffle orchards in the surrounding county and 530 members in the local truffle association, which has provided a key forum for truffle cultivators to share technical, financial and administrative experiences. Structured interviews were carried out in 2002 with a number of orchard owners, as well as representatives of financial and governmental institutions. Truffles, which are harvested using trained dogs, typically fetch local cultivators average prices of 220-670 EUR/kg, although retail prices of high-quality specimens may reach twice this amount. In addition to the direct economic impact, an increase in local land prices was also documented, as well as a tendency for continued expansion of truffle orchards, and thus oak reforestation. In conclusion, the promotion of truffle cultivation through autonomous community and provincial government subsidies, in conjunction with support by local banks, a dedicated local truffle association, and growing interest on behalf of local farmers, seems to have achieved the mutual goals of biodiversity conservation and improving the rural economy in this region of Spain.

- This paper intends to contribute to the research field of vocabulary learning from an Arabic language acquisition perspective. After a brief introduction, the paper deals first with some linguistic, Arabic-specific considerations within the vocabulary teaching theoretical framework and then presents a research project, the scope of which is the monitoring of students’ vocabulary proficiency in two subsequent terms, where vocabulary instruction differed in focus on teaching methods. Specifically, the paper outlines the frequency ranges of the words taught during the course, accounts for the methods chosen to measure the students’ vocabulary proficiency and compares and discusses the results.

- The objective of the present work is to get an understanding of the phase relationships in the CaO-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3 system with a view to control the precipitation of Cr-spinel in the slag phase. The equilibrium phases in CaO-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3 slag system at 1873 K (1600°C) have been investigated experimentally and compared with the results from thermodynamic calculations. The Cr2O 3 and MgO contents in the slag were fixed at 6 and 8 wt-% respectively. The basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag was varied in the range 1·0-2·0. A gas/slag equilibrium technique was adopted to synthesise the slag at a high temperature in air. The samples were heated to and soaked at 1873 K (1600°C) for 24 h in order to achieve the equilibrium state and subsequently quenched in water. The chromium distribution and phase compositions in the quenched slag were studied using scanning electron microscope wavelength dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. FactSage software was used for the phase equilibrium calculations. The experimental results obtained from the present work were compared with the calculation results from FactSage software. It was found that the spinel formation at 1873 K (1600°C) is favoured in the slag basicity range 1·0-1·4.

- Syftet med denna artikel är att, utan anspråk på fullständighet, ge en probleminventerande översikt över sambandet mellan redovisning och beskattning avseende materiella lagertillgångar och att ge ett bidrag till lösningen av några skatterättsliga spörsmål inom denna ram.Artikeln inriktas i första hand på frågor om skatterättslig periodisering i samband med relativt normala affärshändelser. Därmed faller inte minst skattefrågor vid omstruktureringar i huvudsak bort. Syftet är inte att behandla fastigheter, tillgångar hänförliga till jord- och skogsbruksverksamhet eller pågående arbeten. I flera fall torde framställningen dock kunna ge viss ledning även i frågor som faller utanför den här gjorda avgränsningen.Analysen inriktas på följande tre frågor, som alla är av central betydelse för skatterättsliga periodiseringsbeslut med koppling till lagertillgångar. Dessa frågor är vilka av ett företags tillgångar som behandlas lagertillgångar, vilka (lager)tillgångar som behandlas som företagets tillgångar och hur lagertillgångar värderas vid och efter anskaffningstillfället.
