  • Difficult Questions and Ambivalent Answers on Genetic Testing
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525. ; 4, s. 463-480
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A qualitative pilot study on the attitudes of some citizens in southern Sweden toward predictive genetic testing – and a quantitative nation wide opinion poll targeting the same issues, was initiated by the Cultural Scientific Research Team of BAGADILICO. The latter is an international biomedical research environment on neurological disease at Lund University. The data of the two studies crystallized through analysis into themes around which the informants’ personal negotiations of opinions and emotions in relation to the topic centred: Concept of Risk,‘Relations and Moral Multi-layers, Worry, Agency and Autonomy, Authority, and Rationality versus Emotion. The studies indicate that even groups of people that beforehand are non-engaged in the issue, harbour complex and ambivalent emotions and opinions toward questions like this. A certain kind of situation bound pragmatism that with difficulty could be shown by quantitative methods alone emerges. This confirms our belief that methodological consideration of combining quantitative and qualitative methods is crucial for gaining a more complex representation of attitudes, as well as for problematizing the idea of a unified public open to inquiry.

  • Re-negotiating Symbolic Capital, Status, and Knowledge : Polish Physicians in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Rethinking Ethnography in Central Europe. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137524485 - 9781349571260 - 9781137524492 ; , s. 41-57
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores what happens when well-educated, highly skilled professionals leave their country of origin to work abroad to make use of their skills and competences in another organizational framework and cultural context. Do they experience any limits regarding the acknowledgement of their seemingly transnational competences and diplomas? What kind of obstacles do they meet and what are their strategies for reestablishing professionalism and status in a new setting? We present the results from our ethnographic study “Polish Doctors in Swedish Medical Care”  as a point of departure for a Bourdieu-inspired discussion on negotiations regarding symbolic capital in another national medical field (cf. Bourdieu 1984, 1988) and the conditions and limitations of transnational mobility of symbolic capital.

  • Memory is Frail (and Truth Brittle) – performance lecture
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Jakarta, MACAN Museum, 13 Jan 2024.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This performance lecture is based on an eponymous installation of 115 charcoal and graphite drawings the artist made in 2019, which was based on a text published in 2018. It questions the nature of reality and the building block of human knowledge, which is perceived mainly through humankind’s limited senses, the main part of which is the eye. At an allegorical level, it interrogates how our understanding of the world is largely constructed visually and recorded through memory, and how these are also prone to manipulation, for example in state propaganda and isolated versions of state-sanctioned history. --- Art does not merely articulate an artist’s personal expression but is often inseparable from a larger historical, political, and geographical context. To kick off the 2024 Museum MACAN public programs, artist/researcher Tintin Wulia presents a performance lecture and discussion session, Memory is Frail (and Truth Brittle). Exhibited as 115 illustrations drawn with charcoal and graphite, Memory is Frail (and Truth Brittle) presents a connection between major world events scattered across different times and places, and how these events are recollected by humans. As the subject navigates through ideas surrounding reality, frailty of memory, and human geography and history, Wulia interrogates what we believe to be reality is constructed largely from our sensory perception, state-sanctioned histories, and fragile memories of humans.

  • De samiska metalldepåerna år 1000-1350 : i ljuset av fyndet från Mörtträsket, Lappland
  • 1984
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis arises out of a new find from Mörtträsket, Lapland, which can be compared with the eleven so called "Finds from Lapp Places of Sacrifice" from North Scandinavia, dated to c. 1000-1350. The Mörtträsket find is characterized by newly made objects and is interpreted as a tradesman's stock. The large find from Gråträsk in Norrbotten has been given a new interpretation as a thiefs hiding-place, consisting of metal objects from plundered Saami sacrificial sites. It has been possible to distinguish these two sites from ten others which must be interpreted as places of sacrifice (although some of them may be sacrificial cum habitation sites or even habitation sites only). The 259 metal artefacts from Mörtträsket can be dated to c. 1100-1350, partly throughdendrochronologically dated finds from Novgorod. The locally made pewter artefacts, especially pendants of three types, have been given a totally new dating, viz. the first half of the 14th Century. This has consequences for corresponding artefacts from Gråträsk, which up till now have been dated to the 11 th-12th Centuries. This local group of objects in the Saami metal deposits is most certainly of Saami manufacture, because of the casting method, their metallic composition and their ornamentation. New data have been derived from a number of metal analyses, concentrating on the pewter artefacts from Mörtträsket. It appears that the local artefacts have a low lead content, while the pewter artefacts from North West Europe (Germany?) have a high one. The former are here thought to be cast of English tin, imported via Norway. The good state of preservation of the pewter artefacts from Gråträsk and Mörtträsket is here considered to be due to their having been under water most of the time.A new attribution has been made: an artefact from Gråträsk is shown to be a West Finnish brooch from c. 750-800. Hence it is the oldest known eastern artefact in the Saami metal deposits. - A Gothic 14th Century silver clasp of the type that later became characteristic of Saami dress, belongs to the Mörtträsket find. This is one example of a change of function of foreign artefacts in the Saami metal deposits. The most striking examples of this phenomenon are the ring-shaped brooches in the deposits, many of which can be seen not to have been used as intended. The fact that the Saamis seem to have ceased to deposit metal artefacts on their sacrificial sites c. 1350 is here interpreted as being due to the changes resulting from the Black Death and the agrarian crisis in Norway.Som twenty other metal deposits from the period 1000-1350 in Northern Fenno-Scandia are here interpreted as Saami. These are silver hoards. Their distribution is not the same as that of the Saami metal deposits treated above. Some of the silver ones, at least, could be expressions of the custom behind the so called Odin's Law.Some characteristics of the Scandinavian and Saami Viking Age culture are still typical of the traditional Saami culture. This "culture fixation" is here interpreted as a sign that the Viking Age was a period of expansion and flourishing trade for the Saamis.

  • Lättja : Det avslöjande avfallet
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Home-making : youth and urban unrest in multiethnic Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: <em>Reimagining Home in the 21st Century</em>. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781786432926 ; , s. 135-150
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary welfare state restructuring in Sweden has led to increased ethnic and residential segregation in larger cities but also to the emergence of urban unrest. Following violent youth rebellions in Swedish suburbs during 2009 a plurality of new dialogue oriented activist groups have emerged among youth, profiled as ‘urban justice movements’. They represent a grassroots mobilization that interconnects spatial with social (in-) justice and addresses issues of segregation, racism and welfare transformation in Swedish cities. The article discusses agency, claims and the meaning of home-making among two generations of activists in multiethnic Swedish suburbia. The authors argue that emergence of new urban justice movements as a public voice expresses politics in making, relating the local with the national and connecting rights to the city with rights to home and belonging.
