    • The introduction of embedded DSP blocks and embedded memory has made FPGAs an attractive architecture for implementation of real-time video processing systems. The big bottle neck of the FPGA compared to other programmable architectures is the complex programming model. This paper presents an automatic generation of placement and routing constraints for FPGA implementation of real-time video processing systems as one step to automate the programming model. The constraint generator targets lower power consumption, better resource utilization and reduced development time. Results show that a 28 % reduction in dynamic power can be achieved using the proposed approach over traditional logic to memory mapping.

    • In this paper, we presents results concerning power consumption and configuration time for FPGA. FPGAs re-programmability, flexibility and re-configurability give rise to number of possibilities like adding more and more features, increasing lifetime duration to embedded systems. Power consumption of the peripheral devices is also meaningfully affects by Time behavior. Estimation based on average activity may not being useful for accurate power estimation of system. The configuration time of FPGA depend on configuration data width, size file, clock frequency and flash time access. We measured the total power consumption on each voltage supply and the total configuration time of Spartan-6 FPGA Atlys board using LabVIEW. Comparison had been made between estimated power value and measured power value. Hence, we believe that our experiment results will be useful to other FPGA-based embedded systems.

    • This paper presents an algorithm for the allocation of on-chip FPGA Block RAMs for the implementation of Real-Time Video Processing Systems. The effectiveness of the algorithm is shown through the implementation of realistic image processing systems. The algorithm, which is based on a heuristic, seeks the most cost-effective way of allocating memory objects to the FPGA Block RAMs. The experimental results obtained, show that this algorithm generates results which are close to the theoretical optimum for most design cases.

    • Aero-engine component design decisions should consider re-manufacturing and/or repair strategies and their impact on lifecycle cost. Existing design approaches do not account for alternative production technologies such as the use of additive manufacturing in life extension processes. This paper presents a modeling and optimization methodology for examining the impact of design decisions in the early development stage on component lifecycle cost during the in-service phase while considering the potential use of additive manufacturing in life extension strategies. Specifically, a system dynamics model is developed to assess different end-of-life scenarios. Finally, an optimization problem is formulated and solved to minimize lifecycle cost with respect to design variables related to remanufacturing.

  • Dynamic lifecycle cost modeling for adaptable design optimization of additively remanufactured aeroengine components

    • Additive manufacturing (AM) is being used increasingly for repair and remanufacturing of aeroengine components. This enables the consideration of a design margin approach to satisfy changing requirements, in which component lifespan can be optimized for different lifecycle scenarios. This paradigm requires lifecycle cost (LCC) modeling; however, the LCC models available in the literature consider mostly the manufacturing of a component, not its repair or remanufacturing. There is thus a need for an LCC model that can consider AM for repair/remanufacturing to quantify corresponding costs and benefits. This paper presents a dynamic LCC model that estimates cumulative costs over the in-service phase and a nested design optimization problem formulation that determines the optimal component lifespan range to minimize overall cost while maximizing performance. The developed methodology is demonstrated by means of an aeroengine turbine rear structure.

    • Cochlear implants (CIs) have been used for many years to restore hearing for deaf patients. Unfortunately, today's CIs are still bulky devices and uncomfortable to wear. In this paper we present three innovations that ultimately should pave the way to a fully implantable bionic ear. First a microfabrication process used to fabricate the polymer metal microelectrode array for auditory nerve stimulation is discussed. Subsequently, a compact biphasic programmable stimulator chip to be used along with this electrode array is presented. By using a double loop feedback circuit topology, the circuit provides a precise stimulation current while requiring only little voltage headroom. The resulting low power consumption and reduced chip area allow for integration of the electronic circuitry onto the electrode array. Finally, as reliability and data transmission rate are two of the most critical issues in CI devices, we propose a software method to improve both data rate and reliability of transmitting digital data from the external part of the CI to the internal part with negligible power consumption. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Six-month prostate cancer empowerment program (PC-PEP) improves urinary function : a randomized trial

    • Purpose: This is a secondary analysis examining a six-month home-based Prostate Cancer-Patient Empowerment Program (PC-PEP) on patient-reported urinary, bowel, sexual, and hormonal function in men with curative prostate cancer (PC) against standard of care.Methods: In a crossover clinical trial, 128 men scheduled for PC surgery (n = 62) or radiotherapy with/without hormones (n = 66) were randomized to PC-PEP (n = 66) or waitlist-control and received the standard of care for 6 months, and then PC-PEP to the end of the year. PC-PEP included daily emails with video instructions, aerobic and strength training, dietary guidance, stress management, and social support, with an initial PFMT nurse consultation. Over 6 months, participants in the PC-PEP received optional text alerts (up to three times daily) reminding them to follow the PFMT video program, encompassing relaxation, quick-twitch, and endurance exercises; compliance was assessed weekly. Participants completed baseline, 6, and 12-month International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) questionnaires.Results: At 6 months, men in the PC-PEP reported improved urinary bother (IPSS, p = 0.004), continence (EPIC, p < 0.001), and irritation/obstruction function (p = 0.008) compared to controls, with sustained urinary continence benefits at 12 months (p = 0.002). Surgery patients in the waitlist-control group had 3.5 (95% CI: 1.2, 10, p = 0.024) times and 2.3 (95% CI: 0.82, 6.7, p = 0.11) times higher odds of moderate to severe urinary problems compared to PC-PEP at 6 and 12 months, respectively.Conclusions: PC-PEP significantly improves lower urinary tract symptoms, affirming its suitability for clinical integration alongside established mental health benefits in men with curative prostate cancer.
