  • Models of teamwork: ideal or not? : A critical study of theoretical team models
  • 2012
  • In: Team Performance Management. - : Emerald. - 1352-7592 .- 1758-6860. ; 18:5/6, s. 328-340
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose - There is a tendency in team research to employ concepts of stepwise models, reachingfrom the primitive to the excellent, to suggest that a higher level of evolution is better than the basic and simple. This tendency includes typologies of teams. This article aims to question the relevance of this view.Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected in three steps. In the first step, articles and books analyzing teams and teamwork from stepwise analytical models were collected. In the second step the collected data were classified into different themes. Each stepwise model was classified into one essential denomination. This classification resulted in eight themes. In the third step each theme was analyzed, which led to the fusion of some of the themes.Findings - The conclusion is that a synchronous, complementary or mature team is not necessarily optimal. Contrary to this, a differentiated, sequential or multi team approach can be optimal for some purposes. Team research needs to establish a more open, inductive and critical attitude than at present.Originality/value - The paper highlights the need to observe and use team theories in a balanced and critical way.

  • Ansvarsfull verksamhetsstyrning
  • 2012
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • "Special Support" in preschools in Sweden : preschool staff's definition of the construct
  • 2010
  • In: International journal of disability, development and education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1034-912X .- 1465-346X. ; 57:1, s. 43-57
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study investigates the definitions of the construct oyoung children in need of special supporto given by preschool staff in Sweden in 540 preschool units. The study has a mixed-methods design based on qualitative analysis of an open-ended question and quantitative analysis of questionnaire responses. The results reveal two general perspectives in definitions of the construct, a child perspective and an organisational perspective. Units with a child perspective had a higher proportion of children in need of special support, especially girls. The study highlights that the term ochildren in need of special supporto is partially socially constructed and is partially based on perceived child characteristics. The perceptions of what is considered to be a child in need of special support held by staff in a unit may impact on the services provided to children in need of special support.

  • Interactive Technology in the FL Classroom : Using Polling and Chat to Promote Student Participation in Campus Education
  • 2011
  • In: Conference Proceedings, International Conference ICT for Language Learning, 4th Edition. - Milano : Simonelli Editore - University Press. - 9788876476778
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This paper presents a project where polling and chat were used in the foreign language classroom to promote student participation and, at the same time, provide a record of student contributions. The setting is a Swedish university course in grammar and translation for advanced learners of English. The majority of seminars are devoted to discussing translation assignments that students have prepared at home. During the project, Adobe Connect Pro, a web conferencing solution for online meetings, was used, and all students had access to a computer in the classroom. For each seminar, an online meeting was set up in Adobe Connect with the following tools enabled: A poll, used as a clicker at the start of the seminar to gather input from students on a specific language issue. A chat, where students typed in their solutions to the translation assignment. A whiteboard, where a selection of student solutions were displayed for feedback and discussion. Student evaluations of the project express that students are positive to using online technology in the classroom. The students participated actively in the poll and chat sessions. In the subsequent oral discussions, participation was remarkably wide. From the teacher’s perspective, the chat provided a written record of student contributions that could be used for further analysis and discussion. Some challenges included managing both written and oral communication in the classroom, and dealing with larger chunks of text in the chat.

  • Tinget, rummet, besökaren : Om meningsskapande på museum
  • 2010
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The main purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse how museum visitors engage with and make meaning from what is being offered to them in terms of the various resources made available in two exhibitions. Yet another purpose is to describe and analyse the design of these exhibitions. The empirical data stems from observational studies at the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm, and includes the investigation of two exhibitions: Prehistories I and II. Eight ‘visiting pairs’ were videotaped and the tapes were multimodally transcribed and analysed. Data also includes digital photos and maps produced by the visitors. In a comparative analysis, descriptions of the exhibitions and their analysis and the visitor study are discussed in relation to earlier research and to the issue of learning.A design-oriented and multimodal perspective on learning is used as a theoretical and methodological framework. The different visits are compared and the visitors’ responses are discussed as different forms of engagement. The results are interpreted within an institutional perspective connected to contemporary discourses within museum studies. The exhibitions are considered as an expression of the museums’ ambition to adjust to a pressure for change. Both exhibitions are, in a greater or less degree, considered as examples of ‘new’ exhibitions in that they rhetorically put forward visitors’ participation, cultural rights, post colonial perspectives and immaterial aspects of cultural heritage. The study presents learning as a social and sign-making activity. It stress how meaning-making and learning happens as a transformation in several steps. As visitors engage in different semiotic resources in the exhibitions’ design, they form new signs through their representations – as a ‘re-design’ of the exhibition – which in turn give them new possibilities for making meaning.

  • Learning and participation : two interrelated key-concepts in the preschool
  • 2010
  • In: European Early Childhood Education Research Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-293X .- 1752-1807. ; 18:2, s. 229-242
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • At the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) conference in Prague in autumn 2007, an international network of teacher trainers and researchers was formed to discuss and investigate what learning and participation meant for preschool teacher students and staff who work with young children. In Sweden, the first of these exploratory studies was conducted at Malardalen University and Stockholm University, and 56 preschool teachers and 56 preschool teacher students participated. The study was carried out with the critical-incident method. The participants were asked in a critical-incident questionnaire about how they understood the concepts of and relationship between learning and participation. Questions also were constructed so that the participants had the opportunity to link the concepts of learning and participation in a real situation in preschool. The results show that preschool teachers and preschool teacher students define the meaning of learning and participation in a similar way. It also showed that learning and participation are clearly related to each other.
