  • Prospects for Wood Pellet Production in Kazakhstan : A Case Study on Business Model Adjustment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energies. - Basel : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 16:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomass and renewable resources are becoming substitutes for fossil-based resources, providing opportunities for more sustainable environmental management and reductions in environmental damage. This paper studies the prospects for wood pellet production in Kazakhstan through the lens of business model adjustment in a microenterprise in Kazakhstan. This study focuses on answering the following questions: (1) How do microenterprises propose, create, deliver and capture value through business models in the wood industry? (2) What are the opportunities and challenges relating to these business models in the context of wood pellet production in Kazakhstan? Kazakhstan has a high potential for biomass production, providing a particularly interesting case for analysing how microenterprises can tap into this potential to create value. This paper combines an analysis of bioenergy and forestry trends with a qualitative case study. The analysis of the business model is based on Osterwalder’s business model canvas. The value proposition of the enterprise studied herein is to provide a local biomass-based alternative to fossil fuels. The overall growth of wood-based industries in Kazakhstan and the national movement towards renewable energy create favourable prospects for microenterprises engaged in the production of wood pellets; however, these industries are also characterised by high institutional and regulatory dependencies. © 2023 by the authors.

  • Comparative phylogeography uncovers evolutionary past of Holarctic dragonflies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PeerJ. - London : PeerJ, Ltd.. - 2167-8359. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here, we investigate the evolutionary history of five northern dragonfly species to evaluate what role the last glaciation period may have played in their current distributions. We look at the population structure and estimate divergence times for populations of the following species: Aeshna juncea (Linnaeus), Aeshna subarctica Walker, Sympetrum danae (Sulzer), Libellula quadrimaculata Linnaeus and Somatochlora sahlbergi Trybom across their Holarctic range. Our results suggest a common phylogeographic pattern across all species except for S. sahlbergi. First, we find that North American and European populations are genetically distinct and have perhaps been separated for more than 400,000 years. Second, our data suggests that, based on genetics, populations from the Greater Beringian region (Beringia, Japan and China) have haplotypes that cluster with North America or Europe depending on the species rather than having a shared geographic affinity. This is perhaps a result of fluctuating sea levels and ice sheet coverage during the Quaternary period that influenced dispersal routes and refugia. Indeed, glacial Beringia may have been as much a transit zone as a refugia for dragonflies. Somatochlora sahlbergi shows no genetic variation across its range and therefore does not share the geographic patterns found in the other circumboreal dragonflies studied here. Lastly, we discuss the taxonomic status of Sympetrum danae, which our results indicate is a species complex comprising two species, one found in Eurasia through Beringia, and the other in North America east and south of Beringia. Through this study we present a shared history among different species from different families of dragonflies, which are influenced by the climatic fluctuations of the past. • Extremely low genetic diversity in a circumpolar dragonfly species, Somatochlora sahlbergi (Insecta: Odonata: Anisoptera)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - London : Nature Publishing Group. - 2045-2322. ; 8, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first empirical treatment of the northernmost breeding dragonfly, Somatochlora sahlbergi. We sequenced populations from United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden and Norway for cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and D2 region of 28s. We found that, despite geographic barriers across its vast arctic range, S. sahlbergi is a single species. Not only does it appear to interbreed across its entire range, there also seems to be almost no variation among European and North American populations in their COI gene fragment (the barcode gene), which is usually extremely variable. We further found that characters thought to be diagnostic for the larvae of S. sahlbergi were absent in our European samples. We review and re-describe the habitat of this species based on new findings from recent field observations. Finally, we report for the first time the likely presence of this species in Japan. We hope our findings will encourage further study of this species and other under-studied insect taxa that inhabit the remote Arctic.

  • Breast cancer patients' satisfaction with a spontaneous system of check-up visits to a specialist nurse
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Oxford : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 16:3, s. 209-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim:  To describe breast cancer patients' satisfaction with a spontaneous system of check-up visits to a specialist nurse. Background:  There is little evidence that routine follow-up visits after breast cancer surgery influence survival or patient satisfaction. Consequently, there is a need to evaluate alternative follow-up programmes.Sample:  A strategic sample of 19 breast cancer patients, who were not involved in a routine follow-up system but who had the possibility of contacting a specialist nurse when necessary, were interviewed.Method:  A qualitative descriptive design inspired by the method of phenomenographic analysis was used.Findings:  Five description categories and 606 statements showing similarities and differences in conceptions were obtained. The patients satisfaction with the knowledgeable and professional skills of the nurses was high. Confirmation and trust were important and necessary in order for the women with breast cancer to feel secure. Patients had a need for information and self-care education . Accessibility and early assessment by professional personnel or an oncology nurse were essential in a system without routine follow-ups.Discussion:  This study identifies key issues in a specialist nurse-led check-up system. The findings can be used for developing an education programme for women who have undergone breast cancer surgery. Additionally, the findings emphasize the need to introduce more flexible solutions to the follow-up programmes, one alternative being specialist nurse-led check-ups.

  • Nurse-led follow-up on demand or by a physician after breast cancer surgery : A randomised study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - London : Churchill Livingstone. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 8:2, s. 109-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The value of routine follow-up with frequent visits to a breast cancer specialist - both in terms of detection of recurrence and patient satisfaction - has been questioned. The aim of this study was to compare nurse-ted follow-up on demand versus physician follow-up after breast cancer treatment with regards to patients’ well-being, satisfaction, access to medical care and medical safety. Two hundred and sixty-four consecutively selected women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, classified as UICC stage I or stage II, were randomised to follow-up at two hospitals in Sweden, either by routine medical follow-up, the physician group (PG, n = 131), or on demand by a specialist nurse, the nurse group (NG, n = 133). Measures were done at baseline and twice a year over a period of 5 years by means of a questionnaire containing the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), and the Satisfaction and Accessibility (SaaC) scale. Number of contacts with the health care services, number of diagnostic procedures, and time to recurrence or death were monitored. The ratings of HAD and SaaC did not show any statistically significant differences between the groups. The levels of anxiety and depression were generally low and levels of patient satisfaction high. There were no differences between the groups concerning time to recurrence or death. This study indicates that women with breast cancer in stages I to II can be followed up by a specialist nurse with high patient satisfaction and good medical safety. © 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • The usefulness of a multidisciplinary educational programme after breast cancer surgery : A prospective and comparative study
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - London : Elsevier. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 10, s. 273-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate a multidisciplinary educational programme with traditional follow-up visits to a physician after breast cancer surgery in terms of well-being, aspects of self-care and coping ability 1 year after diagnosis. A reduction in the intensity of follow-up after breast cancer surgery is recommended. New follow-up models are being debated and could be of interest. The study design was non-randomised and comparative. Ninety-six consecutively selected women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, classified as stage I or stage II, participated in either a multidisciplinary educational programme (n = 5 0), or traditional follow-up by a physician (n = 4 6). Three questionnaires were used: Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G), a study specific questionnaire regarding self-care aspects (SCA) and Sense of Coherence (SOC). With the exception of physical well-being at baseline there was no significant difference between the groups. The women in the multidisciplinary educational programme increased their physical and functional well-being (P < 0.0 1). The women in traditional follow-up by a physician increased their functional well-being while social/family well-being (P < 0.0 1) decreased over time. There was a statistically significant difference in SOC (P < 0.0 0 1) in the traditional follow-up by a physician between baseline (mean=74.4, SD=12.4) and the 1-year follow up (mean=67.7, SD=11.4). Thus, women in the traditional follow-up by a physician scored lower in the area of SOC 1 year after diagnosis. A multidisciplinary educational programme may be an alternative to traditional follow-up by a physician after breast cancer surgery, but more research is needed about the financial benefits and effectiveness of such a programme.

  • Satisfaction with routine physician follow-up visits to the physician - The needs of patients with breast cancer
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - Stockholm : Taylor & Francis. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 40:4, s. 454-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Follow-up visits after surgery for breast cancer constitute a large proportion of the outpatient consultations at surgical and oncological clinics. The reasons for the follow-ups include early detection of relapse, patients' well-being, and data collection for quality assurance and scientific studies. The aim of this study was to describe the needs of the patient with breast cancer and satisfaction with routine follow-up visits to the physician. A strategic sample of 20 women with breast cancer, routinely followed-up at an oncology outpatient clinic, was interviewed. A qualitative descriptive design inspired by the phenomenographic method was used. The results identified the need for routines, accessibility, security, continuity, confidence and information. The women's views demonstrated that there are strong reasons for reviewing and changing the design of the traditional follow-up system to obtain the most effective and well-functioning system possible to better meet these women's needs.

  • Self-esteem and perfectionism in elite athletes : effects on competitive anxiety and self-confidence
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Personality and Individual Differences. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0191-8869 .- 1873-3549. ; 32:5, s. 865-875
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The setting of high standards is an integral part of elite sports, and often beneficial for the athlete's performance. However. individuals who are characterized by frequent cognitions about the attainment of ideal, perfectionistic standards, have been shown to be likely to experience heightened levels of anxiety. due to discrepancies between ideal and current self 1 situation. This could Of Course be detrimental to their sport performance. The aim Of the Study Was to investigate the relationship between different patterns of perfectionistic dimensions and sport-related competitive anxiety and self-confidence. for elite athletes with different self-esteem strategies. The results revealed that the relation between self-esteem and perfectionism differs depending on which dimensions of self-esteem and perfectionism that ire being considered. Athletes with a high self-esteem based on a respect and love for themselves had more positive patterns of perfectionism, whereas athletes who have a self-esteem that is dependent on competence aspects showed I more negative perfectionism. Further, negative patterns of perfectionism were in the present Study related to higher levels of cognitive anxiety and lower levels of self-confidence, Hence, it seems that sport related anxiety is positively associated to certain patterns of perfectionism. patterns that are more common in individuals with specific self-esteem strategies. • Cross-Sectional Associations of Body Adiposity, Sedentary Behavior, and Physical Activity with Hemoglobin and White Blood Cell Count
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 19:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This study examined whether hemoglobin (Hb) and white blood cell count (WBC) associate with body adiposity and other cardiometabolic risk factors, as well as accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA), when adjusted for body mass index (BMI). Methods: The cross-sectional analysis included 144 participants (42 men) with a mean age of 57.0 years and a mean BMI of 31.7 kg/m2. SB and standing time, breaks in sedentary time and PA were measured during four consecutive weeks with hip-worn accelerometers. A fasting blood sample was collected from each participant during the 4-week measurement period and analyzed using Sysmex XN and Cobas 8000 c702 analyzers. Associations of WBC, Hb and other red blood cell markers with cardiometabolic risk factors and physical activity were examined by Pearson’s partial correlation coefficient test and with linear mixed regression models. Results: In sex- and age-adjusted correlation analyses both BMI and waist circumference correlated positively with Hb, WBC, red blood cell count (RBC), and hematocrit. Hb was also positively correlated with systolic blood pressure, insulin resistance scores, liver enzymes, LDL, and triglyceride levels. Sedentary time correlated positively with WBC, whereas standing time correlated negatively with WBC. Lying time correlated positively with WBC, RBC, hematocrit, and Hb. Regarding SB and PA measures, only the association between lying time and RBC remained significant after adjustment for the BMI. Conclusion: We conclude that body adiposity, rather than components of SB or PA, associates with Hb levels and WBC, which cluster with general metabolic derangement. © 2022 by the authors.
