  • Services supporting users: The case of energy services to end-users

    • Energy services provided by energy suppliers have been identified as important in supporting sustainable development. However, the energy suppliers struggle in developing services that support the end-users energy efficiency, due to e.g. limited customer engagement and competition from actors with expertise in e.g. data analytics. The purpose of this paper is to investigate challenges faced by energy suppliers when developing services aimed at improving the end-users’ energy efficiency. A single case-study identifies challenges for energy service development that relate to capabilities and organisation, respectively.

    • Considering the challenges LSPs are facing, the state of logistics services in the mainstream service literature, its fragmented nature, and provider-centric service classifications in the logistics literature, the purpose is to develop a new classification of logistics services in order to understand their evolution in relation to servitization that takes place in the customer’s supply chain. The study uses generic service frameworks and servitization criteria to illustrate how logistics service providers move towards advanced services.

    • In container terminal operations, the storage yard plays an important role for a terminal's overall performance because it links the seaside and landside and serves as the buffer area for storing containers. Therefore, storage and stacking logistics has become a field that increasingly attracts attentions in both academic and practical research during the recent years. The purpose of this article is to review and classify the growing literature on storage and stacking logistics, and to identify the research areas that could be further investigated. The literature in this area mainly falls into three categories: storage space allocation problem, design of optimal yard layout and container stacking logistics. This article is among the first known to review the literature focus on this area, it thus provides a new perspective for both managers and researchers on the issue of yard operations management.

  • Sustainable Development of Logistics: The Case of Energy Efficiency in Last-Mile Fulfillment

    • Purpose Last-mile fulfillment is among the most energy-consuming logistics operations in the supply chain. An array of fulfillment options exists, by which shipments are distributed to the point of reception (private household) by private transport, home delivery, and consumer pickup. The energy efficiency of these fulfillment options is a result of the interaction between distribution structure, transportation execution, and household logistics capability. This paper’s purpose is to explore last-mile fulfillment options in regard to their energy consumption and identify propositions that make last-mile fulfillment more energy-efficient. Design/methodology/approach Interviews with Swedish retailers and their logistics service providers were conducted to compare different last-mile fulfillment options for consumer goods. Findings This paper identified options in last-mile fulfillment, which were analyzed in relation to their energy efficiency. Since private transportation is very energy-consuming, energy could be saved in last-mile fulfillment when certain propositions are in place and distribution structure, transportation execution, and household logistics capability are aligned. Research limitations/implications Viewing consumers as co-producers of logistics solutions may improve energy efficiency of last-mile fulfillment modes in the supply chain. Practical implications This paper gives insights to managers of logistics companies and retailers in how to shape last-mile fulfillment and save energy in this energy-consuming transportation leg. Original/value Sustainable development of logistics services can be further enhanced by examining energy efficiency of various last-mile fulfillment options.

    • The chapter provides a perspective on sustainable supply chains and energy with clear implications: profit must meet planet. The chapter begins with a brief explanation of the key concepts and explanatory logic of energy efficiency as a mechanism of sustainable supply chains. This is developed further through a systems-level perspective as a means of scoping the potential for energy efficiency improvements. A set of four types of logistics situations that cut through the supply chain illustrate how supply chains set conditions for energy consumption and improving energy efficiency.

    • Several solvents for Grouped ActiNide EXtraction (GANEX) processes have been investigated at Chalmers University of Technology in recent years. Four different GANEX solvents; cyclo-GANEX (CyMe4--BTBP, 30 vol.% tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) and cyclohexanone), DEHBA-GANEX (CyMe4-BTBP, 20 vol.% N,N-di-2(ethylhexyl) butyramide (DEHBA) and cyclohexanone), hexanol-GANEX (CyMe4-BTBP, 30 vol.% TBP and hexanol) and FS-13-GANEX (CyMe4-BTBP, 30 vol.% TBP and phenyl trifluoromethyl sulfone (FS-13)) have been studied and the results are discussed and compared in this work. The cyclohexanone based solvents show fast and high extraction of the actinides but a somewhat poor diluent stability in contact with the acidic aqueous phase. FS-13-GANEX display high separation factors between the actinides and lanthanides and a good radiolytic and hydrolytic stability. However, the distribution ratios of the actinides are lower, compared to the cyclohexanone based solvents. The hexanol-GANEX is a cheap solvent system using a rather stable diluent but the actinide extraction is, however, comparatively low.
