  • REX-ISOLDE - Post-accelerated radioactive beams at CERN-ISOLDE
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Czechoslovak Journal of Physics. - 0011-4626. ; 50, s. 229-234
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ISOLDE facility at CERN has been producing a broad range of radioactive beams for more than 30 years. The present low-energy beams (60 keV) of ISOLDE will soon be complemented by a post-accelerator, REX-ISOLDE, currently under construction. A novel scheme of trapping, cooling and charge-state breeding has been devised, which allows for a short, cost-effective LINAC reaching 0.8 - 2.2 MeV/u. The original physics aim of the REX-ISOLDE experiment is to probe the weakening of the magic numbers N=20,28 when going to extremely neutron-rich species by Coulomb excitation and neutron transfer reactions. For this purpose, a highly efficient Ge-detector array will be used, the MINIBALL. A number of other experiments are as well approved or planned.

  • The NUSTAR project at FAIR
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 1402-4896 .- 0031-8949. ; T166:T166, s. 014070-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The FAIR facility, under construction at the GSI site in Darmstadt, will be addressing a wealth of outstanding questions within the realm of subatomic, atomic, plasma, bio-physics and applications through a combination of novel accelerators, storage rings and innovative experimental set-ups. One of the key installations is the fragment separator Super-FRS that will be able to deliver an unprecedented range of radioactive ion beams in the energy range of 0–1.5 GeV u−1. These beams will be distributed to three branches, each with its unique domain with respect to beam energies and properties. The high-energy branch will permit reactions with radioactive beams at relativistic energies, whereas the low-energy branch will supply decelerated beams for high-resolution spectroscopy, traps and laser spectroscopy. Finally, the ring branch will uniquely permit stored and cooled exotic beams for a range of methods only possible in a storage ring. Thus, by developing experimental set-ups tailored for these beams, there are several complementary possibilities to gain information on key nuclei and reaction, to further our understanding on contemporary questions within nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. This ambitious programme is to be exploited within the nuclear structure, astrophysics and reactions collaboration.

  • One-neutron removal reactions on Al isotopes around the N=20 shell closure
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X .- 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 85:4, s. 044312-1-044312-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The one-neutron removal cross sections of neutron-rich Al isotopes and longitudinal momentum distributions of the residues have been measured for A=33 to 36 at relativistic energies (≈900 MeV/u). The inclusive data have been interpreted within the eikonal approximation. The evolution of the single-particle occupancy in the ground state of 33,34,35Al has been studied and compared with shell model predictions. The inferred 2s1/2 neutron occupancy in the 33Al ground-state wave function is 20% to 40% lower than the predicted one. The inclusive data do not exclude the presence of intruder states. Some intruder l=1 occupancy is found in 34Al, similarly to 33Mg. The single-particle 1f7/2 occupancy shows a gradual increase at N=22. Correspondingly, a decrease of the 1d3/2 strength has been observed.

  • Shell Closure N=16 in O-24
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1165, s. 90-93 461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N=14, 16 in neutron-rich O isotopes rather than N=20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the O-24 is a doubly magic nucleus (Z=8, N=16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the O-23,O-24 ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Results obtained in one-neutron removal reactions performed by using in-flight radioactive ion beams produced at the Fragment Separator FRS of GSI are reported.

  • Non-analog beta decay of Rb-74
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 511:2-4, s. 145-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnitude of the Coulomb mixing parameter delta (l)(IM) has been experimentally deduced, for the first time, for the B decay of Rb-74. Th, estimated magnitude is derived from the feeding of the non-analog first excited 0(+) state in Kr-74. The inferred upper Limit of 0.07% is small compared to theoretical predictions. The half-life was measured to be 64.90(9) ms.

  • High-sensitivity study of levels in Al-30 following beta decay of Mg-30
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 94:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • gamma-ray and fast-timing spectroscopy were used to study levels in Al-30 populated following the beta(-) decay of Mg-30. Five new transitions and three new levels were located in Al-30. A search was made to identify the third 1(+) state expected at an excitation energy of similar to 2.5 MeV. Two new levels were found, at 3163.9 and 3362.5 keV, that are firm candidates for this state. Using the advanced time-delayed (ATD) beta gamma gamma (t) method we have measured the lifetime of the 243.8-keV state to be T-1/2 = 15(4) ps, which implies that the 243.8-keV transition is mainly of M1 character. Its fast B(M1; 2(+) -> 3(+)) value of 0.10(3) W.u. is in very good agreement with the USD shell-model prediction of 0.090 W.u. The 1801.5-keV level is the only level observed in this study that could be a candidate for the second excited 2(+) state.

  • Exclusive measurements of quasi-free proton scattering reactions in inverse and complete kinematics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 753, s. 204-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quasi-free scattering reactions of the type (p, 2p) were measured for the first time exclusively in complete and inverse kinematics, using a 12C beam at an energy of ~400 MeV/u as a benchmark. This new technique has been developed to study the single-particle structure of exotic nuclei in experiments with radioactive-ion beams. The outgoing pair of protons and the fragments were measured simultaneously, enabling an unambiguous identification of the reaction channels and a redundant measurement of the kinematic observables. Both valence and deeply-bound nucleon orbits are probed, including those leading to unbound states of the daughter nucleus. Exclusive (p, 2p) cross sections of 15.8(18) mb, 1.9(2) mb and 1.5(2) mb to the low-lying 0p-hole states overlapping with the ground state (3/2-) and with the bound excited states of 11B at 2.125 MeV (1/2-) and 5.02 MeV (3/2-), respectively, were determined via γ-ray spectroscopy. Particle-unstable deep-hole states, corresponding to proton removal from the 0s-orbital, were studied via the invariant-mass technique. Cross sections and momentum distributions were extracted and compared to theoretical calculations employing the eikonal formalism. The obtained results are in a good agreement with this theory and with direct-kinematics experiments. The dependence of the proton-proton scattering kinematics on the internal momentum of the struck proton and on its separation energy was investigated for the first time in inverse kinematics employing a large-acceptance measurement.

  • Quasi-free proton knockout from 12C on carbon target at 398 MeV/u
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proton-removal mechanism of the 12C→11B reaction induced on a carbon target via elementary nucleon-nucleon scattering is investigated in exclusive triple-coincidence measurements. The observed two-nucleon angular correlations are found to be consistent with quasi-free scattering of a projectile-like proton off a target-like nucleon. Exclusive cross sections for one-step pp and pn interactions are determined as σpp=17.2(12) mb and σpn=18.2(18), respectively. The extracted quasi-free component amounts up to 58(4)% of the total proton-removal cross section. The results are compared to total proton-removal cross sections obtained from the experiment and eikonal reaction theory.

  • Large asymmetry in the strongest beta-transition for A=9
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 576:1-2, s. 55-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new measurement of the beta-decay of Li-9 has clarified the feeding to the highest accessible states in Be-9. It is found that the P-decay mainly populates the 11.8 MeV state, whose spin is determined as 5/2(-). The extracted B-GT value of 5.3(0.9) is a factor 4.4(1.0) larger than that of the mirror transition from C-9. A theoretical explanation of such a pronounced beta-decay asymmetry is presently lacking.
