  • Proton Scattering for Analysis of Atmospheric Particulate Matter
  • 1975
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the American Physical Society Ser II. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton scattering has been applied to the problem of elemental quantitative analysis of air particulate matter. Elements up through chlorine may be resolved using 16 MeV protons incident upon targets up to about 1 mg/cm2 in thickness. Using the FSU Super FM Tandem Accelerator and a large area solid state proton detector, an analysis can be performed in several minutes. Combination of this technique with proton induced X-ray emission analysis provides a means of quantitative analysis for all elements. These accelerator based methods are being applied to studies of the composition of air particulate matter in diverse locations such as St. Louis, Mo.; Los Angeles, Ca.; several cities in Florida; and Bermuda.

  • Resilience Safety Culture
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 17th World Congress on Ergonomics 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Safety culture may be seen as the oil necessary for an efficient safety management system. During the work in HILAS SMS task force some weaknesses in the use of safety culture in practice were identified. A work stream was initiated to identify further weaknesses and suggest remedies for them. The objective of this paper is to discuss some of the weaknesses and propose mitigations. A major suggestion is to actively look for „holes‟ in the safety culture and mitigate them. The „holes‟ could be low-score groups, low-score aspects of safety culture, and critical time-windows. Also the efforts by top management may need to be improved. Also means for feed forward control should be used and further developed as proposed by the new school of resilience engineering. Also when problems with long questionnaires are too big shorter questionnaires could be used complemented by interviews and studies of behaviour and artefacts.

  • Virtual Reality in Air Traffic Control
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEA 2000/HFES 2000 Congress. ; 6, s. 6-275
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Air traffic control is a highly spatial work. However, there are currently no three-dimensional tools used in the education of air traffic controllers or in the operational work of air traffic control. This paper presents results from some pilot studies aiming to: -Find new techniques for visualization and editing of trajectories in air traffic control. -Investigate how Virtual Reality (VR) can contribute to the air traffic controllers’ understanding of the air space and of certain situations. Two VR models have been developed. In one model a procedure called ‘holding’ is visualized. In the other VR model the different sectors in the air space are shown to make it easier for the air traffic controller to build a mental picture of a sector. In a training package the user can fly around in the sector and see how traffic passes through. These introductory studies indicate the usefulness of new ways to present the third dimension in a variety of air traffic situations. The tools can be used to visualize a three dimensional situation and help the air traffic controller to build a mental model The most obvious application area is in training and education of air traffic controllers but other applications such as an explanation and communication tool in the investigation after an incident are of interest.

  • X-Ray Production by 1.5-11 MeV Protons
  • 1974
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik. - 0044-3328. ; 266:4, s. 245-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • K-shell ionization and L x-ray production cross-sections by proton impact have been determined from measurements of K x-ray yields from thin targets of Ti, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni and Ag and of L x-ray yields from Au and Pb. The proton energies varied from 1.5 to 11 MeV. A Si(Li) semiconductor detector recorded the x-rays. The total error in the measured cross-sections is mostly less than 5 %. Kβ/Kα, ratios and Lι,β,ƴ/Lα, ratios have been determined. Ionization cross-sections have been compared with predictions of the plane-wave Born approximation (PWBA) and the binary-encounter approximation (BEA). Both theories describe the ionization quite well: PWBA is, however, better for higher proton energies whereas BEA is superior for lower energies. An empirical formula for ionization cross-sections is derived.

  • X-Ray Techniques for Aerosol Sulfur Baseline Assessment Along an Urban Freeway
  • 1976
  • Ingår i: Advances in X-Ray Analysis. ; 19, s. 415-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atmospheric aerosol particles have been sampled near a Los Angeles freeway and analyzed by proton-induced X-ray emission, PIXE, as a sulfur baseline study in September 1974 before 1975-model automobiles, equipped with catalytic emission control devices, appeared in large numbers. The sampling plan was optimized according to the requirements of X-ray analysis techniques, fluctuations in air flow across the freeway, and the time and particle size resolution of the aerosol sampling equipment. During five selected two-hour intervals with cross wind conditions, particles were collected as a function of size by six cascade impactors operating simultaneously on three towers at 2 and 7 meters above road level 35 meters upwind and 35 meters downwind of the traffic lanes. Particles as a function of time were sampled continuously, for the 100-hour duration of the experiment, from the tree 7-meter heights using time series streaker filter samplers with two-hour time resolution. Precise analysis of S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Br, and Pb established relationships which permit estimates to be made of future increases in particulate sulfur as a consequence of increased sulfate emissions from catalytic automobiles
