  • Elemental imaging of dental hard tissues by secondary ion mass spectrometry.
  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 12:5, s. 201-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High resolution imaging by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been employed in a chemical-microstructural pilot study of different classes of hard tissues from human and rat. The special scanning ion microprobe instrumentation permitted the recording of element-resolved images with a lateral resolution of about 50 nm. Sharp distribution micrographs were obtained for Ca+, F- and CN-, and in selected specimens for Na+, K+, Mg+, O-, Cl-, C- and PO-. Several trends in the elemental kinetics of mineralization were comprehensively illustrated and new aspects were indicated. The paper points out the broad scope of interest, and the potentialities of unique applications, in SIMS imaging of biomineralized tissues, the conditions for efficient employment of the recently developed technique are briefly discussed and demonstrated.

  • Fluorine uptake in bovine enamel from various treatment agents.
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 11:6, s. 263-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bovine tooth enamel with a low and uniform fluorine content was used for the study of fluorine uptake by the Micro-Acid-Drop enamel biopsy technique from different treatment agents commonly used in Sweden. The fluorine concentration in the enamel was also measured after an exposure of the treated test surfaces in artificial saliva for 90 minutes. Sodium fluoride 0.2% and 2%, ferric aluminum fluoride solution and Duraphat varnish showed a high uptake of fluorine in the enamel with the highest concentration in the surface layer. Fluor Protector and the toothpastes showed a considerably lower fluorine uptake. After immersion in artificial saliva of the specimens, the concentration of fluorine in the enamel decreased.

  • Analysis of lead and cadmium in deciduous teeth by means of potentiometric stripping analysis.
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 11:1-2, s. 45-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The content of lead was analysed in 101 deciduous teeth by means of potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA). In order to check possible matrix effects a limited amount of samples were analysed with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) as well. After weighing, the teeth were dissolved in 1M hydrochloric acid and the metal determinations were performed. The mean lead concentration was 2039 ppb w/w tooth substance. A sufficient correlation between PSA and AAS was found. A significantly higher level of lead was found in teeth from children brought up in areas of heavy traffic compared to children living in more rural areas. In conclusion the PSA technique is a reliable, sensitive and fast method for determining heavy metals in dental hard tissues. As a biproduct the corresponding figures for cadmium were achieved with a mean value of 369 ppb, however with a lower degree of confidence.

  • Mineralization disturbances in the deciduous teeth of children with so called minimal brain dysfunction.
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Swedish dental journal. - 0347-9994. ; 11:1-2, s. 37-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exfoliated deciduous teeth from 14 children with so called Minimal Brain Dysfunction (MBD) and from 14 age-matched comparison children without MBD were collected and ground sections prepared. The sections were analysed by means of polarized light and microradiography. The enamel in ground sections of deciduous teeth from children with MBD showed a wider neonatal line than normal. The prenatal enamel showed a slight tendency to an increase in the degree of porosity, and the overall severe pathology was more common in the MBD group than in the comparison group.

  • Infant feeding and dental caries--a longitudinal study of Swedish children.
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 9:5, s. 201-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to compare dietary habits in children at the age of 12 months with the caries status at the age of 3. In 312 children, residing in 3 different parts of Sweden, a dietary study was carried out at 12 mo. of age, and in 275 (88%) a caries examination was performed at the age of 3. At 12 months of age, higher education of the mother was positively correlated with consumption of bread, vegetables, fruit and meat and negatively with frequency of sucrose-rich foods. At the age of 3, caries was diagnosed in 16% of the children. The prevalence of cavities was related to the level of education of the mother in all 3 areas, cavities being most numerous in children whose mother had received a shorter education. A discriminant analysis showed that the equation discriminating the two a priori defined groups, one with and one without caries at the age of 3, contained a number of sucrose-rich foods. The 3-year-old children with caries had generally consumed cakes, butter, bread and sweet soups more frequently at the age of 12 months than the children in the non-caries group. The analysis thus indicated that - on the group level at least - a dietary pattern, which may be casually linked with future dental caries development, was already established at the age of 12 months. Dietary counselling, when the child is 12-18 mo. of age and based upon information about the dietary habits of the child could thus be of value to prevent caries in the preschool child.
