  • Are two resources really better than one? : Some unexpected results of the availability of substitutes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-4797 .- 1095-8630. ; 92:11, s. 2865-2874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility of exploiting multiple resources is usually regarded as positive from both the economic and the environmental point of view. However, resource switching may also lead to unsustainable growth and, ultimately, to an equilibrium condition which is worse than the one that could have been achieved with a single resource. We developed a dynamic model where users exploit multiple resources and have different levels of preference among them. In this setting, exploiting multiple resources leads to worse outcomes in both economic and ecological terms than the single resource case under a wide range of parameter configurations. Our arguments are illustrated using two empirical situations, namely oil drilling in the North Sea and whale hunting in the Antarctic.

  • An Evaluation of R.L. Ackoff’s Interactive Planning : A Case-based Approach
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 24:4, s. 355-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Russell L. Ackoff developed the Interactive Planning (IP) methodology as a conceptual tool to guide systematic and systemic development of organizations. One of its unique features is that such development should be ideal-oriented. IP has been well-received within the Systems Thinking community in particular; where more than 300 applications of IP are mentioned. However, it has not been easy to answer the question: “does the use of IP enable that which it is proposing to enable?” as there have been no systematic, empirically grounded, and critically oriented, evaluations of IP. This study attempts to offer such an evaluation. In this case, IP was employed to support a comprehensive development of a Department within a company. This IP application was evaluated using a set of predefined evaluation criteria derived from the IP as such and also from its critique. The results suggest that IP is indeed a powerful methodology to guide organizational development. While IP has several positive merits, a set of limitations were identified and serve here as a basis for deriving recommendations for the practitioners of IP and also suggestions of areas that merit further IP research.

  • Essential components of e-maintenance
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Performability Engineering. - 0973-1318. ; 7:6, s. 555-571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many intellectual, societal, business and technological forces are continuously pushing forward the frontiers of science. When combined, they provide an umbrella for generating new fields and exploring new grounds. One such a new field is e-Maintenance. e-Maintenance addresses new needs and provides various benefits in form of increased availability, reduced lifecycle cost and increased customer value. However, it suffers from lack of a commonly defined basis supporting the existence of e-Maintenance and determining the essential components inherent in the e-Maintenance domain. In this paper, we suggest an initial set of components that serve as the groundwork of the e-Maintenance universe. The set outlines ten initial components. These are definition, business, organization, product, service, methodology, technology, information, customer, and education and training. The paper also suggests a definition of e-Maintenance, places eMaintenance in the context of other e-Domains, and elicits e-Maintenance intellectual opportunities and challenges to be met by both the academia and industry.

  • Implicit influences of Christian religious representations on dictator and prisoner's dilemma game decisions
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Socio-Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1053-5357 .- 1879-1239. ; 40:3, s. 242-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate how implicit influences of Christian religious representations affect prosociality. We examine the direct impact of religion as an independent variable on prosocial behavior. We do so by priming participants with religious words in a scrambled sentence task before they make a dictator game and a prisoner's dilemma game decision. Priming religious words significantly increased prosocial behavior in both games: participants in the treatment group were more generous and cooperative than participants in the control group. The priming effect was present regardless of participants' self-reported religiosity. Self-reported religiosity was not correlated with generosity or cooperation. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

  • Transitions from part-time unemployment: Is part-time job a dead end or a stepping stone?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy. - 0143-831X .- 1461-7099. ; 32:4, s. 569-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the effects of individual characteristics on the probability of leaving part-time unemployment. The results show that it cannot be unreservedly asserted that part-time work offers access to the core labour market. Among the part-time unemployed, there are great variations in the degree to which they are likely to leave part-time unemployment. A concentration of labour market policy activities on the part-time unemployed who are least likely to succeed in finding full-time employment can, therefore, be expected to have positive consequences from both equity and efficiency points of view. In this respect, part-time unemployed women, persons with work-related disabilities and persons with temporary employment come to the forefront. The article shows that the likelihood of finding a full-time job is certainly not great for persons belonging to these groups. For many of them, part-time job is not a stepping stone but rather a dead end on the labour market.

  • Perception of budgetary control : a study of differences across managers in Swedish public primary healthcare related to professional background and sex
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 19:5, s. 664-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background  The composition of managers in Swedish public primary care centres has changed since the mid-1990s, favouring nurses and female managers. In parallel, health-care professionals have become more involved in the management structure and many have experienced an increased demand for cost containment. There is limited empirical evidence about how managers with different professional backgrounds perceive tight budgetary control.Aim  To examine whether perceptions of tight budgetary control across managers in Swedish public primary care are related to personal characteristics such as professional background and sex.Method  A questionnaire measuring perception of tight budgetary control was administered to all (636) identified managers in Swedish public primary care centres (response rate was 59%). Differences between groups were analysed through logistic regression and factor analysis. Results  Nurses and other non-physicians perceived the budgetary control to be tighter than did physicians and female physicians perceived the budgetary control to be tighter than did male physicians. Conclusions and implications for nursing management  Results suggest that nurses were more committed to the budgetary control system and county council objectives than physicians. The impact of these differences are uncertain, however, nurses’ capacity to influence primary care services may be more limited compared with physicians because of their lower professional status.

  • Adapting to local ethical standards: a case of a global company
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Globalisation. - : Inderscience publishers. - 1753-3627 .- 1753-3635. ; 7:3, s. 367-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The normative challenges that emerge from a global-local tension, particularly with regard to the supra-legal normativity structures, such as ethical, aesthetical, or creedal, are addressed here. This study investigates a globally operating company that successfully adapted to the local ethical conditions, which contributed to its achievement of business success. Theoretically regarded, it is not clear how the phenomena of globalisation should be conceived. This investigation assumes a novel approach to the conceptual elaboration of globalisation, based upon some selected components from the Cosmonomic philosophy of H. Dooyeweerd. A multi-modal analysis of this case is presented, which uncovers inherent normativity structures governing the involved actors. This in turn provides a rationale for why the alignment between the ethical and economic norms may be congruent and positive. In this way, some initial and tentative proposals are advanced here for an alternative approach to the conception of the phenomena of globalisation.

  • Solid waste management baling scheme economics methodology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Iranica Journal of Energy and Environment (IJEE). - : IDOSI Publications. - 2079-2115 .- 2079-2123. ; 2:2, s. 104-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A cost structure is proposed for evaluating and improving the ecological-economic efficiency of baling sub-scheme units within solid waste management schemes that end with, for example, incineration for heat and power production. The methodology proposed employs the previously introduced WAste Managements’ Efficient Decision model (WAMED) and the COmpany STatistical BUSiness Tool for Environmental Recovery indicator (COSTBUSTER). The previously introduced equality principle and the Efficient Use of Resources for Optimal Production Economy (EUROPE) model are applied so to in monetary terms express the emissions in case of bale related fire (sol), pollutions from leachate (liq) and odour (g) at a scheme. Previously, the EUROPE model has been applied to residuals from producing industry, the construction sector and whole landfills. A case study presents the practical application of the proposed methodology. It is concluded that the presented novel methodology for evaluation and improvement of the ecological-economic efficiency of solid waste baling management schemes simultaneously decreases the negative impact on the environment and the health of the population, provides the foundation of an investment appraisal support tool for the implementation of solid waste management projects and enables comparative analysis of estimated, actual and prevented monetary damages from the implementation of baling plant units.
