- Mesoporous metal oxides Co3O4 are prepared via hard templating synthesis method by using various mesoporous silicas with different pore size as templates. The pore size of the mesoporous silicas with the symmetry of two-dimensional (2d)-hexagonal p6mm, bicontinuous cubic Ia-3d and Pn-3m have been controlled in the range of 6.6–10.7, 4.2–7.5 and 5.1–6.7 nm, respectively, by choosing different surfactants and co-surfactants and by adjusting either the aging temperature or the ionization degree of the surfactant. The pore size of the silica template has been considered to be an important factor that determines the mesostructure of the resulting metal oxides. It has been found that for p6mm, it is easier to replicate the mesoporous symmetry at large size of mesopores. For Ia-3d, at large-pore size two sets of bicontinuous meso-channels are replicated into mesoporous Co3O4, while small-pore Ia-3d leads to replication of both one set and two sets of meso-channels. Co3O4 can replicate both one set and two sets of bicontinuous Pn-3m meso-channels at all pore sizes that can be obtained (5.1–6.7 nm), indicating the existence of ordered complementary micropores within the silica walls.

Degradation of diclofenac and triclosan residues in sewage sludge compost

- Land application of sewage sludge compost is an important and efficient tool in the remediation of industrial landscapes and agricultural soils in Estonia. A number of studies have shown that, as a rule, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are neither completely removed by sewage treatment, nor completely degraded in the environment. In this study, degradation rates of diclofenac sodium (DFC) and triclosan (TCS) were determined during sewage sludge composting. Anaerobically digested and dewatered sewage sludge was mixed with sawdust at two different ratios (1:2 and 1:3 sludge/sawdust, v:v). Then aerobic composting was carried out. These ratios were chosen on the basis of previous studies on sewage sludge composting with different bulking agents. The initial concentration of DFC and TCS was 2 mg kg-1 in relation to dry weight (dw). Low quantities of the studied pharmaceuticals were present in sewage sludge that was used for preparing the compost mixtures used in our experiments. The background concentrations of DFC and TCS were never equal to zero. The results showed that the difference between sewage sludge and bulking agent ratios (1:2 vs 1:3) in compost samples did not significantly affect temperature profiles during the experiment. The degradation of pharmaceuticals was more complete in the compost samples where the ratio of bulking agent was higher (1:3 by volume). The average degradation level (in all compost mixtures) was 95% for DFC and 68% for TCS. Pharmaceuticals entering into the soil may affect microbial activity, plant growth and development, and may have adverse effects on living organisms.

- We present a blind speech watermarking algorithm that embeds the watermark data in the phase of non-voiced speech by replacing the excitation signal of an autoregressive speech signal representation. The watermark signal is embedded in a frequency subband, which facilitates robustness against bandpass filtering channels. We derive several sets of pulse shapes that prevent inter-symbol interference and that allow the passband watermark signal to be created by simple filtering. A marker-based synchronization scheme robustly detects the location of the embedded watermark data without the occurrence of insertions or deletions. In light of a potential application to analog aeronautical voice radio communication, we present experimental results for embedding a watermark in narrowband speech at a bit-rate of 450 bit/s. The recursive least-squares (RLS) equalization-based watermark detector not only compensates for the vocal tract filtering, but also recovers the watermark data in the presence of nonlinear phase and bandpass filtering, amplitude modulation, and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), making the watermarking scheme highly robust.
