- The loss of native riparian vegetation and its replacement with non-native species or grazing land for agriculture is a worldwide phenomenon, but one that is prevalent in Europe, reflecting the heavily-modified nature of the continent's landscape. The consequences of these riparian alterations for freshwater ecosystems remain largely unknown, largely because bioassessment has traditionally focused on the impacts of organic pollution on community structure. We addressed the need for a broader perspective, which encompasses changes at the catchment scale, by comparing ecosystem processes in woodland reference sites with those with altered riparian zones. We assessed a range of riparian modifications, including clearance for pasture and replacement of woodland with a range of low diversity plantations, in 100 streams to obtain a continental-scale perspective of the major types of alterations across Europe. Subsequently, we focused on pasture streams, as an especially prevalent widespread riparian alteration, by characterising their structural (e.g. invertebrate and fish communities) and functional (e.g. litter decomposition, algal production, herbivory) attributes in a country (Ireland) dominated by this type of landscape modification, via field and laboratory experiments. We found that microbes became increasingly important as agents of decomposition relative to macrofauna (invertebrates) in impacted sites in general and in pasture streams in particular. Resource quality of grass litter (e.g., carbon : nutrient ratios, lignin and cellulose content) was a key driver of decomposition rates in pasture streams. These systems also relied more heavily on autochthonous algal production than was the case in woodland streams, which were more detrital based. These findings suggest that these pasture streams might be fundamentally different from their native, ancestral woodland state, with a shift towards greater reliance on autochthonous-based processes. This could have a destabilizing effect on the dynamics of the food web relative to the slower, detrital-based pathways that dominate in woodland streams.

- Adaptive management (AM) is widely promoted to improve management of natural resources, yet its implementation is challenging. We show that obstacles to the implementation of AM are related not only to the AM process per se but also to external factors such as ecosystem properties and governance systems. To overcome obstacles, there is a need to build capacities within the AM process by ensuring adequate resources, management tools, collaboration, and learning. Additionally, building capacities in the legal and institutional frames can enable the necessary flexibility in the governance system. Furthermore, in systems experiencing profound changes in wildlife populations, building such capacities may be even more critical as more flexibility will be needed to cope with increased uncertainty and changed environmental conditions.

- This article provides a conceptual discussion of 'ownership' in various forms of participatory research. The discussion is grounded in our experiences from three research projects in science education. We seek to understand how and why ownership may be distributed between teachers and researchers at different stages in the research process. Looking at our projects in retrospect, we see that ownership was differently distributed at the initial stages. Then ownership distribution followed a similar pathway, as teachers gained ownership of implementation, whereas researchers reclaimed ownership of analyzing and disseminating the work. Our discussion departs from the idea that ownership relates to both 'risks' and 'benefits' as well as to both 'rights' and 'obligations'. Thereby, we can make visible some of the circumstances that steer ownership towards the teachers or researchers. For example, we highlight that ownership distribution may be influenced by guidelines for research ethics and inequalities in terms of administrative support structures available to researchers and teachers. Based on our discussion, we suggest a number of questions to initiate and support a continuous dialogue between teachers and researchers who plan to engage in participatory research.

- This article describes the development and testing of a research instrument, Families' Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses' Attitudes (FINC-NA), designed to measure nurses' attitudes about the importance of involving families in nursing care. The instrument was inductively developed from a literature review and tested with a sample of Swedish nurses. An item-total correlation and a first principal component analysis were used to validate the final instrument, including a second principal component analysis to analyze dimensionality, and Cronbach's alpha was used to estimate internal consistency. The instrument consists of 26 items and reveals four factors: families as a resource in nursing care, family as a conversational partner, family as a burden, and family as its own resource. Cronbach's alpha was 0.88 for the total instrument and 0.69 to 0.80 for the subscales. The instrument requires further testing with other nurse populations.

- Education and research within the interdisciplinary subject food and meal science can be mediated through science, craft and creativity and cooking is a central activity. This paper aims at elucidating some aspects of cooking through the perspectives “Culture and Communication” “Food Science” and “Nutrition and Health”. This was done through a survey among students and teachers. The results stress the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to understand the different aspects of cooking and the prominent view on cooking as a cultural and communicative activity.

Knappast, menar Albina Brunnosson, lärare vid Högskolan i Kristianstad och doktorand i kostvetenskap vid Uppsala universitet. I veckans debatt skriver hon att behovet av skolans minsta ämne är större än någonsin. Inte minst för jämställdheten.

- Genom intervjuer med förskolepedagoger har flera behov kunnat utkristallisera sig, ofta är behoven snarlika. Samma behov som Annika Unt Widell har uppmärksammat i sitt arbete med Skolmatens vänner har också förskolepersonalen själva upplevt. Främst handlar det om bristande kunskaper hos pedagogerna när det gäller vilken mat som är nyttig och hälsosam. Brist på de kunskaperna gör också att det är betydligt svårare att försöka skapa hälsosamma matvanor hos barnen, eftersom pedagogerna känner sig rådvilla inför alla nya hälsobudskap och uttalanden om vilken mat som är just hälsosam och bra. Just denna osäkerhet hos pedagogerna kan ses som problematisk då våra matvanor grundläggs tidigt i livet. Ytterligare ett problem som flera av pedagogerna har är att de inte vet hur de ska arbeta pedagogiskt med måltiden. Vidare upplever de pedagoger där maten kommer från ett centralkök att de inte har de möjligheter de hade önskat för att arbeta pedagogiskt med måltiden. De menar också att de är maktlösa och inte kan påverka i en viss riktning, även om de vet hur mat- och måltidssituationen skulle kunna förbättras. För de förskolor som får maten från centralkök väcks också frågor om varmhållning och uppvärmning, alltså en slags livsmedelssäkerhet. En av pedagogerna som jobbar på en förskola där maten tillagas, kan uppleva att kokerskan och pedagogerna är långt ifrån varandra i fråga om mat, barn och måltider. Raka motsatsen är det på exempelförskolan Smultronstället där kokerskan är en självklar del av det pedagogiska arbetet. Vidare har jag också noterat att flera pedagoger skulle önska en handledning för att kunna omvandla styrdokumenten till mat- och måltidssituationer i förskolan.
