  • In conversation with Elizabeth Minnich

  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the conference of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) in Bergen, Norway (October 2018), we were privileged to have heard a lecture by Elizabeth Minnich, “People who are not thinking are capable of anything: What are students learning, how are students learning it, and does it make them better people?”In November 2018, as a follow-up to the lecture, Chng Huang Hoon (then ISSOTL vice president, Asia Pacific) invited the ISSOTL community to pose the questions to Professor Minnich. Questions from four members—John Draeger, Torgny Roxå, Johan Geertsema, and Chng Huang Hoon—were received. Professor Minnich emailed her responses to each question, and over the next six months there ensued several email exchanges between each contributor and Professor Minnich, which resulted in the first draft of this conversation. With the help of the above contributors, Huang Hoon wove the separate pairs of exchanges into this conversation, which not only addresses points in her keynote in Bergen but also discusses issues in her works.Teaching & Learning Inquiry has generously provided this platform for sharing the conversation. We hope TLI readers will benefit from this effort and we welcome readers to continue the discussion.

  • Signal transduction pathways involved in PDGF receptor-induced cellular responses
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), is a potent connective tissue cell mitogen and chemoattractant which binds to two structurally related receptors denoted PDGF α- and β- receptors. Upon binding of PDGF to the receptor, signaling molecules containing Src Homology 2 (SH2) domains are recruited to the activated receptor and mediate propagation of the signal. This thesis describes several such interactions and the resulting biological responses. The cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase Src has been implicated in mitogenic signaling induced by PDGF. However, PDGF α-receptors containing mutations of two tyrosine residues responsible for Src binding, could still mediate mitogenic-responses, despite decreased Src - PDGF α-receptor association. The lipid kinase phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) has been reported to mediate reorganization of the cytoskeleton and to induce cell migration upon stimulation of cells with PDGF. Rac, a member of the Rho family of monomeric GTPases, acts downstream of PI3-K in reorganization of the cytoskeleton. By expression of dominant-negative or constitutively active mutants of Rac, and treatment of cells with wortmannin, a drug that inhibits PI3-K activity, the involvement of PI3-K and Rac in cell mobility could be established.PI3-K consists of two subunits, each of which exists in several isoforms. To identify the role of two specific isoforms of the catalytic PI3-K subunits in PDGF and insulin signaling, the effect of microinjection of neutralizing antibodies was studied. This approach showed that p110 a is required for PDGF-induced cytoskeletal changes, whereas p110β is not. In contrast, insulin-induced cytoskeletal changes involved p110β but not p110α.The SH2 domain-containing adaptor molecule Shb has been shown to be involved in signaling leading to programmed cell death, apoptosis. Shb could bind to both PDGF α- and β-receptors via its SH2 domain. Residue 720 in the kinase insert of the PDGF α-receptor was involved in this interaction. Overexpression of Shb led to increased apoptosis in cells cultured in low serum; treatment with PDGF-BB, but not PDGF-AA. rescued cells from apoptosis in a manner dependent on a functional Shb SH2 domain. Furthermore, the pattern of PDGF-induced cytoskeletal changes was changed in cells overexpressing Shb.

  • Melt spinning of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) nanocomposite fibers reinforced by cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW)
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bio-based continuous fibers were processed by melt spinning of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) as well as environmental friendly plasticizer, triethyl citrate (TEC). Homogeneous dispersion of the CNW in CAB was achieved by solvent exchange to ethanol using sol-gel process. The appropriate amounts of well dispersed CNW organo-gel (2 and 10 wt%) as well as 15 wt% TEC were compounded with the dissolved CAB in ethanol followed by magnetic string, solution casting and grinding. Melt spinning of compounded CAB/TEC and CAB/TEC/CNW were carried out using a twin-screw micro extruder in continuous mode to decrease the residence time of materials and avoid thermal degradation. Afterwards, the fibers were solid-state drawn to enhance the mechanical properties. The addition of the CNW restricted the drawability of the fibers to a factor of 1.5. The tensile test data showed that 2 wt% CNW had no noticeable effect on modulus and tensile strength of the fibers while 10 wt% CNW increased the modulus and tensile strength by 58% and 36% respectively. Drawing, in general, provided greater stiffness and strength but sacrificed the ductility of the fibers. The microscopy studies showed that the fiber diameters were in the range of 350-450 μm for as-spun fibers and 300-350 μm for drawn fibers and no defect and increased surface roughness could be detected on the surface of the both as-spun and drawn composite fibers. Furthermore, The thermal properties, viscoelastic behavior as well as crystallinity properties of the fibers were characterized by TGA, DMTA and XRD.

  • Fault analysis on distribution feeders employing solid state transformers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479964154 ; , s. 6938868-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on fault analysis of a distribution feeder which employs Solid State Transformers (SSTs) rather than magnetic transformers in order to facilitate large scale integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the system. To estimate the fault current profile on such a feeder, the paper proposes a new method which extends the capability of conventional short-circuit analysis method. Performance of the proposed method has been assessed by simulations on a sample distribution feeder.

  • Power flow solution for multiphase unbalanced distribution networks with high penetration of photovoltaics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ELECO 2013 - 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9786050105049 ; , s. 167-171
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Power flow analysis on a Photovoltaic System (PV)dominated distribution network is rather different than a conventional distribution system. This paper proposes a new three-phase power flow solution for such networks that considers the multiphase unbalanced nature of distribution systems together with different system topologies. Power flow contributions of PVs and different types of loads are also considered. The performance of the proposed method has been assessed by simulations on a sample distribution network.
