  • The CDIO syllabus: a comparative study of expected student proficiency
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Engineering Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0304-3797 .- 1469-5898. ; 28:3, s. 297-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Engineering students must graduate with command of a vast body of technical knowledge. They must possess personal, interpersonal and system-building skills to function in teams, and be prepared to produce products and systems. Their education must have been structured under a curriculum blending ability to combine technical expertise with ethical, innovative, philosophical and humanistic acumen. This paper describes a unique international collaboration among four universities to reform engineering education. The collaborators agreed to a statement of goals, which includes descriptions of knowledge, skills and attitudes vital to an effective education, and codifies proficiency levels expected of graduates. We developed and utilized unique stakeholder surveys both to validate our prototype and to determine desired proficiency levels. This collaboration resulted in The CDIO Syllabus, A Statement of Goals for Undergraduate Engineering Education. The syllabus is both a template and a process that can be used to customize the syllabus to others' programmes. It can define new educational initiatives/and be employed as the basis for rigorous assessment. This paper details how, with the input of industry, academia and others, we employed an engineering problem-solving paradigm to effect our redesign. It outlines the syllabus and the unique process employed to create it.

  • Effects of In-Company Quality Awards on Organizational Performance
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Total quality management (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0954-4127 .- 1360-0613. ; 14:2, s. 235-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between total quality management (TQM) practices and improved performance has been frequently discussed in the literature. In this paper, the costs and the effects of in-company quality awards on performance are discussed and analysed. The paper covers a survey of Swedish companies that use or have used in-company quality awards to stimulate TQM efforts and thereby to improve performance. The study cannot show any strong evidence of improved performance for units that applied for the in-company quality award. However, in contrast to units that have not applied, some units that have applied for the in-company quality award considered that the results related to performance have improved greatly. One large positive effect perceived by the participating units was increased customer orientation while the largest costs were put on the description of activities and the improvement work itself.

  • Classification of Neck Movement Patterns Related to Whiplash-Associated Disorders Using Neural Networks
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on information technology in biomedicine. - : IEEE. - 1089-7771 .- 1558-0032. ; 7:4, s. 412-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a new method for classification of neck movement patterns related to Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) using a resilient backpropagation neural network (BPNN). WAD are a common diagnosis after neck trauma, typically caused by rear-end car accidents. Since physical injuries seldom are found with present imaging techniques, the diagnosis can be difficult to make. The active range of the neck is often visually inspected in patients with neck pain, but this is a subjective measure, and a more objective decision support system, that gives a reliable and more detailed analysis of neck movement pattern, is needed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the predictive ability of a BPNN, using neck movement variables as input. Three-dimensional (3-D) neck movement data from 59 subjects with WAD and 56 control subjects were collected with a ProReflex system. Rotation angle and angle velocity were calculated using the instantaneous helical axis method and motion variables were extracted. A principal component analysis was performed in order to reduce data and improve the BPNN performance. BPNNs with six hidden nodes had a predictivity of 0.89, a sensitivity of 0.90 and a specificity of 0.88, which are very promising results. This shows that neck movement analysis combined with a neural network could build the basis of a decision support system for classifying suspected WAD, even though further evaluation of the method is needed.

  • Comparative genomic hybridization of postirradiation sarcomas
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - 1097-0142. ; 92:7, s. 1992-1998
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND. Radiotherapy is a known risk factor for sarcoma development. Postirradiation sarcomas arise within the radiation field after a latency period of several years and usually are highly malignant. Very little is yet known about their genetic changes. METHODS. Twenty-seven postirradiation sarcomas were analyzed by comparative genomic hybridization, which allows genome-wide screening of DNA sequence copy number changes. RESULTS. Copy-number aberrations were detected in 20 (74%) tumors. The mean number of aberrations per tumor was 5.3 with gains outnumbering losses. The most frequent gains affected the minimal common regions of 7q11.2-q21 and 7q22 in 30% and 7p15-pter in 26%. Gain of 8q23-qter was detected in 22%. The most frequent losses affected 11q23-qter and 13q22-q32 in 22%. In osteosarcomas, the most frequent aberration was loss of 1p21-p31, in malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) gain of 7cen-q22, and in fibrosarcomas gain of 7q22. The findings in postirradiation osteosarcomas and MFHs were compared with findings in sporadic osteosarcomas and MFHs, reported previously by the authors. In sporadic osteosarcomas, gains outnumbered losses, but, in postirradiation osteosarcomas, losses were more frequent than gains. Loss at 1p was rare in sporadic osteosarcoma (3%) but frequent (57%) in postirradiation osteosarcomas. Gains at 7q were frequent both in postirradiation and sporadic MFH. CONCLUSIONS. According to previous studies on different types of sporadic sarcomas, gains at 7q or 8q are associated with poor prognosis or large tumor size. Thus, the frequent gains at 7q and 8q might have been responsible in part for the poor prognosis of postirradiation sarcomas. Also, however, some of their clinical features, i.e., high malignancy grade, late diagnosis, and central location, are associated with a poor prognosis.

  • Genetic epidemiology of prostate cancer
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prostate cancer is a major health burden throughout the world, yet the etiology of prostate cancer is poorly understood. Evidence has accumulated supporting the existence of a hereditary form of this disease. Improved understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying the development and progression of prostate cancer would be a major advance for improved prevention, detection and treatment strategies. This thesis evaluates different aspects of the genetic epidemiology of prostate cancer. In a genomic scan two chromosomal regions with evidence for linkage was observed. The strongest support was found on chromosome 19p with an allele sharing LOD score of 2.91 (genome-wide P = 0.032). The second region, showing suggestive evidence of linkage, was observed in the centromeric region of chromosome 5. Linkage analyses of densely spaced markers on chromosome 8p22-23 confirmed (P = 0.03) previously reported linkage to this region. A systematic evaluation of the possible impact that the RNASEL gene have on prostate cancer was performed. Overall, limited evidence for association with prostate cancer risk was found. The results provide strong evidence against a role of RNASEL in prostate cancer etiology in Sweden. In a comprehensive evaluation of occurrence of other malignancies in HPC families, previously reported association between gastric and prostate carcinoma was confirmed. The increased risk was of the same magnitude in early and late onset HPC families and confined to only male relatives. A genome-wide linkage analysis, stratified by occurrence of gastric carcinoma, identified a novel susceptibility locus on chromosome Xp21. In summary, chromosome 5q and 19p represents the regions most likely to harbor susceptibility genes predisposing to prostate cancer in the Swedish population. A common genetic basis for both gastric and prostate cancer has been confirmed and a novel susceptibility locus on chromosome Xp21 has been identified.
