Transnational Media Events. The Mohammed Cartoons and the Imagined Clash of Civilizations

- In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons – or interpretations of them – were connected to discursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history. In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada. The book looks at the coverage of the cartoons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media’s relations to immigration policy, and issues of integration. Through this approach, the book aims at a nuanced understanding of the cartoon controversy itself as well as at more general insights into the role of the media in contemporary transnational and transcultural relations.

- This study emphasizes the importance of involving stakeholders in data formation related to assessments of hydropower development as a prerequisite for projects to be sustainable. It concerns the emerging dissonance between policy and its implementation after the UNCED and UNSSD conventions, when using hydropower development as a case. The new policies make it mandatory for implementing agencies to introduce or expand social considerations far beyond old practices. About a dozen project cases are assessed to show how policy change has influenced project design and implementation gradually. Readers will find a detailed account for new data formation methods through stakeholder mobilization. The book shows how the sustainability drive combines with democracy and grassroots involvement to influence stakeholder formation of project details.

- I rapporten behandlas ungdomars etablerings- och försörjningsvillkor i Norden mot bakgrund av ländernas olika system för att organisera yrkesutbildning och arbetsmarknadspolitik. De nordiska länderna behandlas ofta som enhetliga ur välfärdspolitisk synpunkt. Denna enhetlighet gäller emellertid inte reglereringarna av övergången från skola till arbetsliv. Det råder också stora skillnader mellan länderna när det gäller arbetslöshetstal och inaktivitet bland ungdomar. En utgångspunkt för de nationsstudier och länderjämförelser som presenteras i rapporten är att de institutionella villkoren har betydelse för ungdomars möjligheter att etablera sig på arbetsmarknaden. En annan utgångspunkt är att samtliga länder har anledning att effektivisera sina övergångsregimer för att motverka växande försörjningsbördor i spåren av en åldrande befolkning. I grunden handlar det om att upprätthålla arbetskraftsutbudet och underlätta skattefinansieringen av framtida välfärd.
