  • André Gide et le débat sur l’homosexualité de L’Immoraliste (1902) à Si le grain ne meurt (1926) : André Gide and the Debate about Homosexuality from L’Immoraliste (1902) to Si le grain ne meurt (1926)
  • 1994
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2003
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This study focuses on five texts by Marguerite Duras which all share the same setting (French Indochina during the twenties and thirties), a certain number of recurring characters and roughly the same plot. These texts are referred to as “the Barrage Cycle” (“le cycle du Barrage”). Over the years the story is deconstructed and reconstructed in various manners. Starting out as scribbled, autobiographical notes (“l’histoire de Léo”, written during the Second World War at the very beginning of M.D.’s literary career), it subsequently takes the appearance of a traditional realistic novel (Un barrage contre le Pacifique, 1950), a poetical play (L’Eden Cinéma, 1977), a semibiographical novel (L’amant, 1984) and a hybrid text combining a third-person novel and an imaginary film script (L’amant de la Chine du Nord, 1991). Each text is analysed from the point of view of narrative technique and the pact established with the reader. One of the main chapters offers a survey of the characters, including recurring categories (such as the young girl, her mother, brother/brothers and lover/lovers), as well as characters who only appear in a single text. The following chapter explores three important themes, connected with the analysis of the characters, the theme of emancipation, the theme of incest and the theme of narration. The study shows that the cycle evolves in close connection with the literary currents of its time and that it contains traces of traditional literary topics and structures.

  • Critique de texte et interprétations d’ouvrages de Jean Chrysostome
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The following remarks on John’s work concern the text and the interpretation of certain passages which are of interest for different reasons : the tradition may be insecure or faulty or the passage may have been more or less misunderstood. Each one is treated as a unity in itself, but comparison with other texts may give some information on the establishment of the text. There are no general conclusions on the style, grammar or philosophical and theological views of the author. The traditions of the texts are complicated, not to say inextricable. However, it often appears a tendency of some kind, generally to explain and facilitate the text. The discussions start from the comparatively modern editions of the texts, usually published in the series Sources Chrétiennes.

    • The following remarks on works of Eunomius, Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa concern the texts and the interpretation of certain passages which are of interest for different reasons : the tradition may be insecure or faulty or the passage may have been more or less misunderstood. Each one is treated as a unity in itself, but comparison with other texts may give some information on the establishment of the text. There are no general conclusions on the style, grammar or philosophical and theological views of the author. The traditions of the texts are complicated,. However, it often appears a tendency of some kind, generally to explain and facilitate the text. • La thématique de l'eau dans l'œuvre de Marguerite Duras. [Nouvelle éd.]
  • 2008
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thematic study is to examine how the water motif is used in Marguerite Duras’s literary work. The study shows that water has multiple functions in these texts: it is linked to major themes and creates an enigmatic atmosphere by its association with the unknown, the inexplicable and the unconscious. The strong presence of water in Duras’s texts is striking. References to the water element can be found in several titles throughout her career, from early works such as Un barrage contre le Pacifique (1950) to La mer écrite (1996), published just after her death. Almost all of her fiction take place near water and the rain or the sound of waves serve as leitmotifs in specific novels. The water motif can play a metonymic as well as a metaphoric role in the texts and it sometimes takes on human or animalistic characteristics (Chapter 4). Several emblematic Durassian characters (e.g. the beggar-woman, Anne-Marie Stretter and Lol V. Stein) have a close relationship to water (Chapter 5). The water motif is linked to many major Durassian themes, and illustrates themes with positive connotations, for example, creation, fecundity, maternity, liberty and desire, as well as themes with negative connotations such as destruction and death (Chapter 6). A close reading of three novels, La vie tranquille (1944), L’après-midi de Monsieur Andesmas (1962) and La maladie de la mort (1982), shows that the realism of the first novel is replaced by intriguing evocations of the sea and the pond in the second text, motifs which resist straightforward interpretation. The enigmatic feeling persists in the last novel, in which the sea illustrates the overall sombre mood of the story (Chapter 7). Finally, the role of the water element in psychoanalytic theory is discussed (Chapter 8), and a parallel is drawn between the Jungian concept of the mother archetype and the water motif in Duras’s texts. The suggestion is made in this last chapter that water is used to illustrate an oriental influence (Taoist or Buddhist) of some of the female characters in Duras’s work.
