- Multinuclear pulsed field gradient NMR measurements and theological viscosity measurements were performed on three series of polymer gel electrolytes. The gels were based on a lithium salt electrolyte swollen into a copolymer matrix comprising an acrylate backbone and ethylene oxide side chains. In each series the side chains differed in length and number, but the acrylate-to-ethylene oxide ratio was kept constant. It was found that the self-diffusion coefficient of the cations was much lower than that of the anions, and that it decreased rapidly when the side chains got longer. In contrast, the self-diffusion coefficient of the anions was found to be independent of chain length. In the gel electrolytes, the diffusion coefficients of the solvent molecules are relatively constant despite an increased viscosity with increasing length of the side chains. However, in saltfree gels made for comparison, the diffusion coefficients of the solvent molecules decreased with, increasing length of the side chains, which is consistent with an increased viscosity.

- Ion conducting polymer gels prepared from (ethylene oxide)(n) grafted methacrylates, ethylene carbonate (EC), gamma butyrolactone (gBL), and lithium hexafluorophosphate are studied by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, This study shows that there are at least two possible lithium sites with different mobility. The lithium-ions with lower mobility dominate at room temperature, but this is changed as the temperature is increased. The NMR results also show that the Li-7 spin-spin relaxation time decreases with increasing length of the grafted ethylene oxide side chains, indicating a stronger interaction between the polymer and the Li-ions, and hence, a lower mobility of the Li-ions. - Multinuclear NMR has been used to investigate the structure and mobility of a series of polymer gel electrolytes. The co-polymers used as matrixes in the gels have acrylate backbones and side chains of ethylene oxide, where the length of the side chains has been varied, while the ratio of acrylate to ethylene oxide has been kept constant. The electrolyte is a mixture of lithium perchlorate and two solvents, ethylene carbonate and gamma butyrolactone. 13 C spectra of the different gel electrolytes shows that both solvents interact with the salt, and that the strength of the interaction increases with decreasing length of the polymer side chains. It also appears that the lithium ions show no selectivity between the two types of solvent. Furthermore, the lithium chemical shift moves progressively upfield with increasing length of the side chains, showing a gradual change in interaction from lithium-solvent to lithium-(ethylene oxide).

- Valence band photoemission with photon energies around the Mn2p excitation threshold has been used to study the development of nanowires catalyzed by MnAs particles. A gradual change in the spectra with increasing nanowire length is observed, such that the resonant photoemission eventually dominates over the Auger decay channel. The change is ascribed to dilution of Mn, showing that Mn is transferred from the MnAs particles into the nanowires. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

- The initial growth of MnBi on MnAs-terminated (GaMn)As is studied by means of synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy. From analysis of surface core-level shifts we conclude that a continued epitaxial MnBi layer is formed, in which the MnAs/MnBi interface occurs between As and Bi atomic planes. The well-defined 1×2 surface reconstruction of the MnAs surface is preserved for up to 2 ML of MnBi before clear surface degradation occurs. The MnBi layer appears to be free from intermixed As.

- Thermally stimulated diffusion of Mn through thin layers of GaAs has been studied by x-ray photoemission. (Ga, Mn)As samples with 5 at% Mn were capped with 4, 6 and 8 monolayer (ML) GaAs, and Mn diffusing through the GaAs was trapped on the surface by means of amorphous As. It was found that the out-diffusion is completely suppressed for an 8 ML thick GaAs film. The short diffusion length is attributed to an electrostatic barrier formed at the (Ga, Mn)As/GaAs interface.

- In situ postgrowth annealing of (Ga,Mn)As layers under As capping is adequate for achieving high Curie temperatures (T-C) in a similar way as ex situ annealing in air or in N-2 atmosphere practiced earlier. Thus, the first efforts give an increase of T-C from 68 to 145 K after 2 h annealing at 180 degrees C. These data, in combination with lattice parameter determinations and photoemission results, show that the As capping acts as an efficient sink for diffusing Mn interstitials.

- We demonstrate crack-free ZnO/GaN distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) grown by hybrid plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy using the same growth chamber for continuous growth of both ZnO and GaN without exposure to air. This is the first time these ZnO/GaN DBRs have been demonstrated. The Bragg reflectors consisted up to 20 periods as shown with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. The maximum achieved reflectance was 77% with a 32 nm wide stopband centered at 500 nm. Growth along both (0001) and (000-1) directions was investigated. Low temperaturegrowth as well as two-step low/high-temperature deposition was carried out where the latter method improved the DBR reflectance. Samples grown along the (0001) direction yielded a better surface morphology as revealed by scanningelectron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Reciprocal space maps showed that ZnO(000-1)/GaN reflectors are relaxed whereas the ZnO(0001)/GaN DBRs are strained. The ability to n-type dope ZnO and GaN makes the ZnO(0001)/GaNDBRs interesting for various optoelectronic cavity structures.

- Fourteen patients with superficial basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and fifteen patients with nodular BCCs were investigated by means of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in connection with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Topical application of delta-amino levulinic acid (ALA) was performed six hours prior to the treatment session. Fluorescence spectra were recorded, using a point-monitoring system with an excitation wavelength of 405 nm. The measurements were performed in scans over the lesion and the surrounding normal skin before application of ALA, and immediately before and after the laser treatment. The selective uptake of the photosensitiser resulted in a fluorescence intensity ratio of 2.4:1 for superficial BCCs and 2.5:1 for nodular BCCs. If the fluorescence intensity was divided by the autofluorescence, this resulted in a contrast enhancement of about a factor 6 for tumour tissue. In seven patients (five with nodular BCC and two with superficial BCC), additional fluorescence measurements were performed two and four hours following the ALA application, and two hours after the PDT procedure. Thus, the kinetics of the transformation of ACA to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) could be followed, which indicated that the synthesis of PpIX was more rapid in the tumour than in the normal tissue. After four hours, the PpIX level inside the tumour was saturated, while there still was an accumulation in the surrounding skin. The highest contrast between tumour and normal skin was reached within two hours after the ALA application.

- The number of onshore wind turbines in Europe has greatly increased over recent years, a trend which can be expected to continue. However, the effects of wind turbine noise on long-term health outcomes for residents living near wind farms is largely unknown, although sleep disturbance may be a cause for particular concern. Presented here are two pilot studies with the aim of examining the acoustical properties of wind turbine noise that might be of special relevance regarding effects on sleep. In both pilots, six participants spent five consecutive nights in a sound environment laboratory. During three of the nights, participants were exposed to wind turbine noise with variations in sound pressure level, amplitude modulation strength and frequency, spectral content, turbine rotational frequency and beating behaviour. The impact of noise on sleep was measured using polysomnography and questionnaires. During nights with wind turbine noise there was more frequent awakening, less deep sleep, less continuous N2 sleep and increased subjective disturbance compared to control nights. The findings indicated that amplitude modulation strength, spectral frequency and the presence of strong beats might be of particular importance for adverse sleep effects. The findings will be used in the development of experimental exposures for use in future, larger studies.
