- Swedish cultural policy has since the thirties have a main goal that everybody should have the possibility to participate in cultural activities. When looking at the figures, the answer is that the cultural policy has been successful. For instance nearly 50 percent visit at least one theatre performance every year. In the last years efforts have been made to change the gender representation on stage, a governmental investigation report pointed out that there is very few female stage directors, playwrights and leading parts. This problem is not directly addressed by the cultural policy, in spite of the cultural goals that aims to involve all.The paper discuss why a majority of male no longer finds it important to take part in culture, and especially visiting theatre performances. Is the politics of equality leading to less value in terms of cultural capital? Is the masculinity threaten by theatre, is it seen as feminizing
