    • A systematic analysis for solving the wave propagation problem in a general bianisotropic, stratified medium is presented. The method utilises the concept of propagators, and the representation of these operators is simplified by introducing the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. The propagators propagate the total tangential electric and magnetic fields in the slab and only outside the slab do the up- and down-going parts of the fields need to be identified. This procedure makes the physical interpretation of the theory intuitive. The reflection and the transmission dyadics for a general bianisotropic medium with an isotropic (vacuum) half-space on both sides of the slab are presented in a co-ordinate-independent dyadic notation, as well as the reflection dyadic for a bianisotropic slab with perfectly electric backing (PEC). In the latter case the current on the metal backing is also given. Some numerical computations that illustrate the algorithm are presented

    • Time-varying wave propagation and time-harmonic wave propagation in biisotropic materials are reviewed and the connection between the formulations is established via the temporal Fourier transform. An alternative method to determine the dispersive properties of a bi-isotropic slab from sinusoidal scattering data at normal incidence is presented. A numerical example (realistic, synthetic scattering data) is given to illustrate the theory. Furthermore, experimental data is presented and used to generate the permittivity, permeability, and chirality parameters of a specific man-made chiral slab in the range 3.5–18 GHz. On the basis of the results of inversion, the question whether the passivity concept is too austere is raised.

    • The polarization direction of an electromagnetic field changes and eventually reaches a steady state when propagating through a birefringent material with off-axis absorption or gain. The steady state orientation direction depends on the magnitude of the absorption (gain) and the phase retardation rate. The change in the polarization direction is experimentally demonstrated in weakly doped (0.05%) Pr3+ : Y2SiO5 crystals, where the light polarization, if initially aligned along the most strongly absorbing principal axis, gradually switches to a much less absorbing polarization state during the propagation. This means that the absorption coefficient a in birefringent materials generally varies with length. This is important for, e.g., laser crystal gain media, highly absorbing and narrow band spectral filters and quantum memories.

    • The concept of nonradiating (NR) sources is introduced to transmission lines in the time-domain analysis. A method is presented to construct localized voltage and current sources which do not produce any fields outside the source domain. These sources cannot, therefore, be detected by measurements made outside the source region. The importance of such sources for the uniqueness of the inverse-source problem is pointed out, and energy conditions for the uniqueness are discussed. The analysis can be advantageously used in the design and optimization of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) properties of transmission lines
