  • A House of Commons? Symbolic Excavations of a Museum cum Villa cum Tombstone
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Glyfer och arkeologiska rum — en vänbok till Jarl Nordbladh. - Göteborg : Göteborg University. - 9185952214 ; , s. 569-591
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article is a symbolic excavation of the Vänersborg Museum, located in the town of Vänersborg, Sweden. The museum opened in 1891 and re-opened as a ‘museum of museum history’ a hundred years later. Through a theorized recontextualization, the museum is displayed as a polysemic spatio-patriarchal marker for the rich donor on par with the buildings of the national state and church; as a token of a private villa; and as a public museum. In this multi-layered object, the practice of bourgeois flânerie in the central part of town is repeated by the gazing flâneur in the museum exhibits. The spatialized elevation of the museum function and of the individual donor and practices of his class are related to possible effects on the asymmetries of museum practices with regard to the ‘social’ other within the local context, and with regard to the framing of the colonized ‘cultural’ other exhibited and domesticated in the museum. The article suggests that forgotten and repressed effects and meanings should be unveiled in a ‘museum of museum history’ in a politicized effort to understand the role of the museum in producing social inequalities and racialized prejudices in Sweden, past and present.

  • Dis(re)membering Spaces: Swedish Modernism in Law Courts Controversy
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation addresses the public controversy, as reflected in newspaper coverage, over the 1936 Law Courts Annex in Göteborg, Sweden. The controversy is conceived as a tension-filled, multi-layered conjuncture of urban rivalry within the nation-state. The politico-differential pair modernism/conservatism and the spatio-differential pair Stockholm/Göteborg are traced out and shown to be formative for subject positions both in the controversy, and in scholarly work during the subsequent six decades. To disentangle the conjuncture, subjects’ spatial sense-making is contextualized with respect to a politicized built environment, and to practices characterized by polysemy, contestation and resemanticization, through which volatile meanings and identity effects are continuously renegotiated. This understanding is elaborated in relation to a notion of power as concerning asymmetries of spatial reach with regard to individuals’ influence and control over practices. From this position, the law courts controversy is unfolded through a multi-factor analysis on several spatial scales, from the nation-state to architectural solutions. It is demonstrated that in the Swedish 1930s, no building but the Law Courts Annex was executed in overt modernism on a site of key symbolico-political significance. The established projection of modernism onto Stockholm and conservatism onto Göteborg is deconstructed. The study shows how the law courts project crystallized into a unique conjuncture entangled in questions of: national and local struggles between fractions of the dominant class; governmental efforts to impose new norms and forms of dwelling and discipline; aesthetic purification and élitism; and conjoined interests of real estate capitalists, functionalist planners, and reformist politicians. The law courts controversy is shown to have been embedded in transpositions of ethics, politics, space and aesthetics. New spaces of commoditized visibility were related to the Law Courts Annex, and a gendered imagery of buildings and female human bodies as homologous were invoked together with notions of sexual and bodily hygiene. The controversy is unfolded as concerned with conditions of identity formation and subjectivity in a space of unseen visibility, and the building is unveiled as a classed and gendered space for the production of humans as mass ornaments with apractic postural models. In conclusion, established scholarly discourse on the Law Courts Annex and the controversy is unveiled as a third-order simulacrum through which the annex since the late 1930s has been produced and preserved as a counterfeit, as a historical simulacrum of the particular imagery of a discourse disconnected from existing traces of the past.

  • Strange Meetings: Walt Whitman, Wilfred Owen and Poetry of War
  • 1997
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In their poetry of war, Walt Whitman and Wilfred Owen substantially revise or reject outright the idea of the sublime, traditional theories of the lyric, and Romantic standards of poetic value that assert the superiority of ahistorical and non-didactic verse. Rather than being faced with an “anxiety of influence,” they confront the immense difficulties of finding a means of adequate poetic response in an age of mechanized mass death. Whitman and Owen similarly but independently propose the physical body as the basis for all shared reference and language. Although Whitman will employ the bodies of those wounded and killed in war as substantiation for his vision of the democratic ideal, the overwhelming reality that they represent eventually undermines his assertions and endangers his sanity. The unknown and anonymous dead in war also create a crisis of naming and language for Whitman, a crisis that results in an increasingly desperate use of metaphor and threatens his poetic voice with silence. Owen constantly emphasizes the effects of war on human embodiment and repudiates the trope of immortality. He argues that a poet must stress immanence over transcendence; the alternative is non-referential language that avoids the physical and human consequences of war. Both Whitman and Owen use the idea of song in verse to further their interpretations of war. For Whitman, sound and rhythm are a means of establishing structure and order on the anarchy of war, a chaos that destroys even the most basic metaphor of the proper name. Owen, by accentuating the poetic techniques of pararhyme, assonance, alliteration, and consonance, reflects the nightmare, unreality and madness of the modern battlefield through sounds that overwhelm and music that disorients. Through his technical practices Owen makes his words disconcertingly tangible, directing his readers towards a rediscovery of the roots of poetry and language. These poets not only mark a dramatic transformation in the nature of verse written about war, but they also anticipate the most significant developments and tropes of 20th-century poetry in general.

  • Web based activities and SLA: a conversation analysis approach
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Language Learning and Technology. - 1094-3501. ; 3:1, s. 75-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different Internet technologies foster the acquisition of different language skills. In the case of synchronous interaction tools, such as Webchat, the concern is to evaluate whether and how this communication context affects the process of acquiring a second langauge. A collection of Webchat interaction data among English non-native speakers (NNS) and native speakers (NS) is the basis for a microanalytic investigation conducted form a Conversation Analysis (CA) perspective. The main purpose is to discover patterns and conversational strategies used by participatns in this on-line context. A CA research approach was chosen since it investigates the machinery and the structure of social action in language, avoiding preformulated theoretic categories. This is important since CMC represents a new SLA context, forcing both NS and NNS to produce different structures and strategies. The study analyzes, in particular, whether Webchat implies a reduction of the range in interactional practices, actions performance, sense making, and meaning negotiation, thus affecting the SLA process. Finally, the researcher considers the reliability and validity of this type of qualitative research in this new technological area.Using some research methodologies taken from CA literature, an analysis of the data focuses first on the overall structure of interaction and sequence organization in connection with the on-line communicaiton setting features. It then passes to turn-taking organization, with attention to recurrent structures and patterns as in openings and closings; turn design (or packaging of actions); expression of paralinguistic features in this on-line context; and some (interlanguage) pragmatic variables. The conclusion resolves the findings and underlines NNS versus NS behaviour, offering hypotheses about SLA through Webchat and synchronous CMC in general, encouraging further investigation.
