  • Ombyggnad Torslanda
  • 1990
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report for the company in question (the Volvo Automobile Company and the Volvo Torslanda plant) which is financed by the company and partly also by a research foundation. It is a matter of a work that in this particular case were carried out during nine years in a number of experimental workshops located outside the Chalmers University of Technology. These workshops were financed by the Volvo Automobile and Truck companies. This achievement, as the final contribution to the Swedish automotive industry after having already treated this research field/problem area for more than two decades before this particular period if time (involving several junior and senior research competencies, as well as industrial and governmental foundings).

  • A methodology for evaluation of order picking systems as a base for system design and managerial decisions
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 14:3, s. 126-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents a methodology useful when analysing the efficiency of order picking systems. The main feature of the analysis is the ability to compare different system designs. The methodology has earlier been applied mainly to assembly production systems, and has in these cases proved to be an effective management tool in discussions concerning the choice of production system.

  • Naturligt grupperat arbete vid Volvo Lastvagnar – Slutrapport
  • 1990
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report for the company in question (the Volvo Truck Company) which is financed by the company and partly also by a research foundation. A comment: As was the praxis during this (early) period of time at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as probably at some other universities. This means that frequent and vast academic publication by means of e.g. conference papers and refereed contributions to scientific journals was almost unheard of. At least so for some of the applied science disciplines. However, today are the situation indeed very different (i.e. earlier was the publication in many respects focused on trying to satisfy the executive administrator the research foundation in question etc.). To be more precise, this early praxis was definitively the case for the research and development work carried out at the Department of Transportation (a broadly applied science discipline), which was characterized by more practical strives to e.g. engineer research results. Rather than relying on truer scientific efforts in a narrower sense. Functional satisfaction (i.e. something engineered work as planned instead verification/falsification of a hypothesis) was judged as being a primary aim of this research and development work.  Therefore are (in the context of the publications registered in Chalmers Public Library CPL) the author making distinctions between consumer reports, on one hand. And, one the other hand, reports and preprints (manuscripts), while instead the academically orientated publications are various sort of scientific contributions presented at conferences or published in scientific journals (actually it is somewhat more complex, but further explanations are omitted here). The consumer reports were aimed at a various external organization with who the authors cooperated, and these are in many cases not available in PDF format to be easily read by logging in at CPL.  This particular approach has judged as being fair/relevant fair in order to mirror of work conducted by the author or authors during the passing decades. Besides, the competencies at Chalmers Library, who actually have been very helpful, have not managed to provide appropriate answers to the various questions implied being at hand just above (this despite trying to get hold of such answers, hence this very comment).

  • Reflective Production in the Final Assembly of Motor Vehicles - An Emerging Swedish Challenge
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 12:7/8, s. 117-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents some theoretical principles and empirical evidence relating to the new Swedish production systems for final assembly of motor vehicles. Contends that in these production systems it is possible simultaneously to enhance efficiency and quality of working life. Briefly sketches three production forms as they apply to the final assembly of automobiles and discusses the societal environments in which these different forms of production have evolved. It focuses on Volvo Uddevalla plant as one of the main examples so far of a reflective production system for final assembly of automobiles. Amplifies the analysis of different production flow patterns for final assembly and in particular addresses the issue of semi‐parallel mechanistic production flow and parallel organic production flow as alternatives to serial flow on a conventional line assembly. A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. But also personal at our department/research group (Mats Johansson) well as our knowledgeable contact person (Bertil Johansson) within Volvo contributed (he has really helped us out for decades and was responsible for the continuous contacts with Volvo in most any matter).

  • Reflektiv produktion – Industriell verksamhet i förnyelse
  • 1992
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book, a sort of summarization of the authors' insights and experiences regarding group work as well as alternatives to assembly line work from their own scientific perspective, which was made available in 1992. That is, in the (very specific) period of time (or turbulence) while the assembly plants in Uddevalla and Kalmar were closed down (the former assembly plant was closed down first, while the other was shut down approximate a year later). This book has been published by Volvo (AB Volvo Media, ISBN-number: 91 9761 604). It has been published by Arbetslivsutveckling with the editors Lars Cambert and Glenn Carlsson at this department. Moreover, the content has been validated by a number of Volvo experts and discussed at a seminary (among other things, each of these experts had to provide written comments to the two editors etc.). A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. But also personal at our department/research group (Mats Johansson) well as our knowledgeable contact person (Bertil Johansson) within Volvo contributed. A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. But, as our knowledgeable contact person (Bertil Johansson) within Volvo has contributed (he was helping us out for decades).
