  • How do you spell development? : a study of a literacy campaign in Ethiopia

    • The problem of illiteracy has been the object of many studies during recent decades. In Ethiopia, a country which reports one of the lowest literacy rates in Africa, the Yemissrach Dimts Literacy Campaign (YDLC) was started in 1962. Its activities were concentrated to rural areas and directed primarly towards adults. This study is an evaluation of the Campaign. The investigation was conducted between 1974-1976 with the purpose of describing and analysing Campaign activities, focusing on student achievement, the teaching process, and benefits experienced by participants of the Campaign. Another important objective was to consider the role of the Campaign within a wider socio-economic and political context.

    • This study deals with some aspects of industrial development in Tanzania in the two last decades which the authors consider to be especially important. They adress mainly three groups of issues. First, choice and transfer of technology, technology policy, and the problems and implications of economies of scale. Second, the effects of foreign aid on industrial development in Tanzania. And third, the role of agriculture in industrial development. There is also a historical analysis of industrial development since independence and a critical assessment of the basic industry strategy (BIS) which was adopted as Tanzania's official industrialization strategy in 1975.

    • Small towns have often been considered as unimportant or even as anomalous phenomena and consequently have been largely ignored by policy makers and researchers. Instead, attention was focussed on the large city or on rural development and agricultural change without consideration being given to the positive contribution that small towns can make to rural transformation.But for the overwhelming majority of Africa's population which is rural, it is the small town with which they have the most frequent and intense contacts and which provides the foci for economic, social, political and cultural rural-urban interaction. The papers in this book address a wide range of issues relating to the small town in rural context from both the macro perspective, including the role of the state, to the micro perspective where attention is given to the vitality and adaptability of individual actors through their utilisation of rural and urban opportunities. Case studies are drawn from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  • Did colonialism capture the peasantry? : a case study of the Karega district, Tanzania

    • This research report argues that during the colonial period the socially acceptable standard living of the smallholder was fundamentally altered. The operation of the smallhold farm unit changed primarily in six areas. These are: 1) food security and consumer goods; 2) changed relations of production on the smallholder plot; 3) customary law and land tenure; 4) wage labour; 5) social differentiation; 6) the long term price elasticity of coffee production. Smallholders were not completely "captured" and proletarianized but neither did they correspond to Hyden's version of an "uncaptured peasantry". This is primarily because they now required certain goods and services from outside the peasant mode of production as a necessary link in their social reproduction.

    • Finland's special characteristics as a Nordic, non-aligned welfare state gave it the resources and motivation to support liberation movements - in spite of restrictions arising from trade interests and a reluctance to jeopardise the country's neutral image. The study shows that, although it is not an easy task, in a democracy ordinary, dedicated people can, over time, influence political decision making at its most closed and guarded area, foreign politics.
