  • The relevance of intangible assets in German SMEs
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intellectual Capital. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1469-1930 .- 1758-7468. ; 9:3, s. 410-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study the perceptions of the advisors and valuers of German associations regarding the relevance of intangible assets in general, and for the purpose of company succession in particular. Design/methodology/approach - To perform this study German associations were examined, which play an essential role in company succession in Germany, from both sides of the process. Conducting a web-survey, 51 answers were received (response-rate = 42.5 per cent) which could be used for the analyses. Findings - Amongst others, the study showed that intangible assets are of a moderate relevance. However, a large proportion of respondents expect intangible assets to be of greater relevance in the future. The study highlighted that intangibles do have a great impact on the decision-making process of an investor. Research limitations/implications - The total population of German Association is 135. The author received answers from 51 associations, which did not fulfil the statistical size to conduct advanced statistical methods. The specific relationship of German associations with small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is rather unique compared to similar institutions around the world, therefore, the results may not be replicable in other countries. Practical implications - The results of this study will help practitioners as well as academics to better understand the relevance of intangible assets in SMEs. Originality/value - This paper is pioneeringin the analysis of the influence of intangible assets in German SMEs for the purpose of company succession.

  • Provision of External Data for DSS, BI, and DW by Syndicate Data Suppliers
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Collaborative Decision Making. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781586038816 - 9781607503460 ; , s. 245-256, s. 245-256
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to improve business performance and competitiveness it is important for firms to use data from their external environment. More and more attention is directed towards data originating external to the organization, i.e., external data. A firm can either collect this data or cooperate with an external data provider. We address the latter case and focus syndicate data suppliers (SDSs). They are the most common sources when incorporating external data into business intelligence, DSS, and DW solutions. SDSs are specialized in collecting, compiling, refining, and selling data. We provide a detailed description regarding the business idea of syndicate data suppliers and how they conduct their business, as well as a description of the industry of syndicate data suppliers. As such, the paper increases the understanding for external data incorporation and the possibility for firms to cooperate with syndicat data suppliers.

  • Personal growth and sensitivity training as fashions in management and management research
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Studies of Management and Organization. - : International Arts and Sciences Press. - 0020-8825 .- 1558-0911. ; 38:2, s. 71-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – to compare the introduction of, and associated contemporary research into, two management fashions. Design/methodology/approach – names the two fashions as “personal growth” and “sensitivity training”, states that sensitivity training was popular in the 1960s-1970s, and that personal growth, incorporating aspects of sensitivity training, was widely used in 1990s-2000s, focuses on the relationship between management fashions and management research fashions, suggests that fashions follow wave patterns, and discusses the role of consultants in the development, diffusion and translation of a fashion. Draws on the author’s own doctoral thesis to illustrate how individuals can be influenced by a fashion, identifies similarities between sensitivity training and personal development, sees the former as a first-wave fashion and the latter as a second-wave, and profiles the techniques, methods and goals of the two fashions, pinpointing self-knowledge, and the belief that in order to understand others one must understand one’s self, as key concepts in both fashions. Analyses two doctoral theses, the first published in 1979 studying sensitivity training, the second published by the author in 2005 studying personal development, reports the author’s interviews with the first paper’s author, likens managers’ identity work in managing to researchers’ identity work in a dissertation, and concludes that both managers and researchers surf on the same or parallel, fashion waves. Originality/value – highlights the cyclic pattern of fashions, and shows how both researchers and practitioners are subject to fashions

  • The politics behind aiding administrative reform : Swedish politicians’ views on the technical assistance to CEE countries during their transition process
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Leadership and Management in the Public Sector: Values, Standards and Competencies in Central and Eastern Europe. - Bratislava : NISPAcee Press. - 9788089013364 ; , s. 133-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research by the authors on the Western assistance to CEE countries during the transition process revealed that it was often ineffective and that priorities in and the nature of aid changed irrespective of negative side-effect on ongoing processes. Recipients blamed foreign advisors for giving inadequate advice; the Swedish foreign advisors pointed to the aid organizations, which did not provide adequate boundary conditions; and the latter told us that it was all politics, decided by consecutive ministers in the Swedish government (Sobis & De Vries, 2004, 2005, 2006, De Vries & Sobis, 2006). This paper is a follow-up on this previous research. In this paper we investigate the motives and reasons behind the assistance programs from the perspective of the Swedish government, which was responsible for this kind of aid. How did Swedish government arrive at decisions regarding the technical assistance to CEE countries and changes therein? The aim of this research is to gain further insight in the explaining factors of the (in)effectiveness of foreign assistance programs. The research question underlying this investigation reads: What were the characteristics of the position of Swedish government with regard to foreign assistance to CEE countries? How did these change during the last 15 years and what were the determining factors explaining these developments? In neo institutional theory two explaining factors are mentioned: the logic of consequentiality and the logic of appropriateness. (March & Olsen, 1989). The research presented in this paper will be framed within this theory. The description of this theory constitutes the first part of the paper. This theoretical part is followed by the presentation of our empirical research. This empirical research is based, firstly, on interviews with the Swedish officials: the Prime Ministers, the representative of Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the representative of Finance Ministry, who were politically active during the years of 1988-1997. Secondly it is based on an analysis of the diaries written by the Swedish officials who were political active during the years 1988-1997, and by some politicians who are still politically active today. Thirdly, it based on an analysis of the Swedish statute-books, government bills, resolutions and reports. The paper concludes on the question which logic (of consequentiality or of appropriateness) was dominant in explaining the decisions made by the Swedish government regarding assistance to CEE countries during the transition process.

  • Export based strategy or manufacturing establishment? : Speculating with Russian market
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1742-7967 .- 1742-7975. ; 4:2, s. 155-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among China and India, former Eastern European countries, and especially Russia has been identified as one of the most lucrative market, e.g. in retail sector. However, this market has experienced quite enormous changes during the last two decades, and manufacturing establishment is considered to contain numerous risks, especially functionality of supply chains (incoming flows and distribution) is one of the main reasons. Our longitudinal case study research confirms this, and shows how difficult it is to achieve comparable cost efficiency in Russia as compared to other factories inside of the same company, but operating in well-developed high-cost country. Due to this, and by the fact that foreign companies still favour export based strategies, we develop mathematical models to evaluate which foreign transit harbours would provide lowest distribution costs. Our research results show that only small number of seaports needs to be considered, if distribution costs are the only issue to be concerned.
