  • Biogas potential from municipal and agricultural residual biomass for power generation in Hazaribagh, Bangladesh : A strategy to improve the energy system
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy Focus. - : Elsevier BV. - 1755-0084. ; 29:June 2019, s. 14-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy is considered as one of the significant benchmarks towards sustainable growth. Due to the recenteconomic growth, energy demand is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. The power generation mainlyrelies on fossil fuels though there are plans to increase the renewable energy share by the concernstakeholders. Considering the global warming, energy generation from renewable sources is consideredas a sustainable way to mitigate the anthropogenic emission. This study, therefore, addresses thepotentiality of biogas production from municipal waste and agricultural residues in a city territory ofDhaka namely Hazaribagh. The potential sources include wastes from two markets, six slaughterhouses, domestic wastes, one poultry farm and three croplands. The calculations made in this study to estimatethe amount of biogas and electricity from the described sources are done in a simple way, just to illustratethe potential. This study suggests that there is a good potentiality of biogas production and electricitygeneration from municipal wastes and agricultural residues of Hazaribagh. Moreover, this study alsomentions the significant actors like government, future owners, people and so on that are needed to beincorporated to implement biogas solution in a city territory.

  • Stretching of Twitchin Kinase
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Biophysical Journal. - St. Louis, MO, United States : Cell Press. - 0006-3495 .- 1542-0086. ; 102:3 Supplement 1, s. 361a-362a
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The giant proteins from the titin family, that form cytoskeletal filaments, have emerged as key mechanotransducers in the sarcomere. These proteins contain a conserved kinase region, which is auto-inhibited by a C-terminal tail domain. The inhibitory tail domain occludes the active sites of the kinases, thus preventing ATP from binding. It was proposed that through application of a force, such as that arising during muscle contraction, the inhibitory tail becomes detached, lifting inhibition. The force-sensing ability of titin kinase was demonstrated in AFM experiments and simulations [Puchner, et al., 2008, PNAS:105, 13385], which showed indeed that mechanical forces can remove the autoinhibitory tail of titin kinase. We report here steered molecular dynamics simulations (SMD) of the very recently resolved crystal structure of twitchin kinase, containing the kinase region and flanking fibronectin and immuniglobulin domains, that show a variant mechanism. Despite the significant structural and sequence similarity to titin kinase, the autoinhibitory tail of twitchin kinase remains in place upon stretching, while the N-terminal lobe of the kinase unfolds. The SMD simulations also show that the detachment and stretching of the linker between fibronectin and kinase regions, and the partial extension of the autoinhibitory tail, are the primary force-response. We postulate that this stretched state, where all structural elements are still intact, may represent the physiologically active state.

  • The dynamics of DNA methylation covariation patterns in carcinogenesis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLoS Computational Biology. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-734X .- 1553-7358. ; 10:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently it has been observed that cancer tissue is characterised by an increased variability in DNA methylation patterns. However, how the correlative patterns in genome-wide DNA methylation change during the carcinogenic progress has not yet been explored. Here we study genome-wide inter-CpG correlations in DNA methylation, in addition to single site variability, during cervical carcinogenesis. We demonstrate how the study of changes in DNA methylation covariation patterns across normal, intra-epithelial neoplasia and invasive cancer allows the identification of CpG sites that indicate the risk of neoplastic transformation in stages prior to neoplasia. Importantly, we show that the covariation in DNA methylation at these risk CpG loci is maximal immediately prior to the onset of cancer, supporting the view that high epigenetic diversity in normal cells increases the risk of cancer. Consistent with this, we observe that invasive cancers exhibit increased covariation in DNA methylation at the risk CpG sites relative to normal tissue, but lower levels relative to pre-cancerous lesions. We further show that the identified risk CpG sites undergo preferential DNA methylation changes in relation to human papilloma virus infection and age. Results are validated in independent data including prospectively collected samples prior to neoplastic transformation. Our data are consistent with a phase transition model of carcinogenesis, in which epigenetic diversity is maximal prior to the onset of cancer. The model and algorithm proposed here may allow, in future, network biomarkers predicting the risk of neoplastic transformation to be identified.

  • Adapting remote labs to learning scenarios : Case studies using VISIR and remotElectLab
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Revista Iberoamericana de Tecnologias del Aprendizaje. - : Education Society of IEEE (Spanish Chapter). - 1932-8540. ; 9:1, s. 33-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remote laboratories are an emergent technological and pedagogical tool at all education levels, and their widespread use is an important part of their own improvement and evolution. This paper describes several issues encountered on laboratorial classes, on higher education courses, when using remote laboratories based on PXI systems, either using the VISIR system or an alternate in-house solution. Three main issues are presented and explained, all reported by teachers, that gave support to students' use of remote laboratories. The first issue deals with the need to allow students to select the actual place where an ammeter is to be inserted on electric circuits, even incorrectly, therefore emulating real-world difficulties. The second one deals with problems with timing when several measurements are required at short intervals, as in the discharge cycle of a capacitor. In addition, the last issue deals with the use of a multimeter in dc mode when reading ac values, a use that collides with the lab settings. All scenarios are presented and discussed, including the solution found for each case. The conclusion derived from the described work is that the remote laboratories area is an expanding field, where practical use leads to improvement and evolution of the available solutions, requiring a strict cooperation and information-sharing between all actors, i.e., developers, teachers, and students.

  • A wide-band RF front-end for multiband multistandard high-linearity low-IF wireless receivers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. - 0018-9200 .- 1558-173X. ; 37:9, s. 1162-1168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wide-band radio-frequency (RF) front-end is designed with a balanced combined low-noise amplifier and a switching mixer (a low-noise converter) in RF Si-bipolar process with an f(T) of 25 GHz. The circuit achieves 20-dB conversion gain, higher than -4.5-dBm RF-to-IF IIP3 (+15.5-dBm OIP3) and less than 3.8-dB double-side-band noise figure in 900-MHz (e.g., GSM) and 1.9-GHz (e.g., WCDMA) frequency bands. The -1-dB compression point is -20 dBm at 13-mA dc current consumption from a single 5-V supply. The local-oscillator leakage to the input is less than -56 dBm in the 900-MHz band and less than -63 dBm in the 1.9-GHz band. The -3-dB bandwidth of the amplifier is larger than 3 GHz and a wide-band matching at the input with - 10 to -41-dB S-11 is achieved in the frequency bands of interest by applying a dual-loop wide-band active feedback. The die area is 0.69 x 0.9 mm(2). The circuit is suitable for area-efficient multiband multistandard low-IF receivers.

  • A wideband frequency selective surface reflector for 4G/X-Band/Ku-Band
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Progress In Electromagnetics Research C. - : Electromagnetics Academy. - 1937-8718. ; 81, s. 151-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) reflector with wideband response for 4G/X-band/Ku-band is proposed. The wideband FSS reflector consists of cascaded dual-layer patch FSS which is etched on separate layers of FR4 substrate. The targeted frequency range is 5–16 GHz. A wide stopband of 10.4 GHz (100% percent bandwidth) is obtained with two layers in cascade. The Equivalent Circuit (EC) method is used to approximate the simulated results. An extensive parametric study is also carried out to understand the effect of various combinations of FSS layers and their disposition. A panel of final FSS is fabricated where measured and simulated results agree well.
