    • The pathophysiology behind the abnormalities of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal cortex axis found in patients with major depressive disorder was studied by the use of the vasopressin test. The response of plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol to the injection of 10 IU lysine-vasopressin (LVP) was investigated in 18 patients meeting the DSM-III criteria for major depressive episode. The response was correlated to the outcome of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) with the use of two different cut-off points, 139 nmol/l and 200 nmol/l respectively. The results show that no significant difference was found in ACTH or cortisol response between patients having a normal or abnormal DST. The results do not seem to support the hypothesis that the abnormalities of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal cortex axis involve a hypersecretion of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and a subsequent desensitization of the corticotrophs to CRF-stimulated ACTH release.

    • Intramuscular ceruletide or placebo was given in a randomized double-blind crossover design to 12 non-obese and 12 obese individuals, 30 min before a palatable lunch meal. No significant effects were found on the amount of food intake or the hunger ratings in any group. Although rapid CCK or ceruletide infusions have been found in some studies to reduce food intake in man and animals, slow infusions have increased food intake. Under the present study conditions, the moderate rate of release of ceruletide from intramuscular depots did not affect the food intake.

    • Folsomia fimetaria (L.) were added (0, 5, 10, 20 animals) to 0.100 g barley straw which had been inoculated 10 days (244 h) earlier with a natural soil microflora. Respiration (CO2 evolution) was monitored continuously. Mass loss, fungal standing crop (total and FDA-active), bacterial and protozoan biomass were estimated 42 days (1,000 h) after microbial inoculation. The degree of surface cover by hyphae was surveyed at regular intervals. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found in respiration, mass loss or microbial biomass, but the density of surface hyphae were reduced by addition of Collembola. Fungal production was low, less than 5% of the estimated microbial production, and could not account for all collembolan growth during incubation. F. fimetaria appeared to consume mainly bacteria and protozoa, and had little impact on carbon mineralization.

    • Data are presented on exclusive ρ0 and φ{symbol} production in deep inelastic muon scattering from a target consisting mainly of nitrogen. The ratio of the total cross sections for ρ0 and φ{symbol} production is found to be 9:(1.6±0.4) at 〈Q2〉=7.5 GeV2, consistent with the SU(3) prediction of 9:2. The t dependence for exclusive ρ0 production is found to become shallover as Q2 increases and, for large Q2, the t dependence is typical of that for a hard scattering process. Furthermore, the ratio of the cross sections for coherent: incoherent production from nitrogen is found to decrease rapidly with Q2. Such behaviour indicates that even for exclusive vector meson production the virtual photon behaves predominantly as an electromagnetic probe.
