- The business model concept is becoming increasingly popular within IS, management and strategy literature. It is used within many fields of research, including both traditional strategy theory and in the emergent body of literature on e-business. However, the concept is often used independently from theory, meaning model components and their interrelations are relatively obscure. Nonetheless, we believe that the business model concept is useful in explaining the relation between IS and strategy. This paper offers an outline for a conceptual business model, and proposes that it should include customers and competitors, the offering, activities and organisation, resources and factor market interactions. The causal inter-relations and the longitudinal processes by which business models evolve should also be included. The model criticises yet draws on traditional strategy theory and on the literature that addresses business models directly. The business model is illustrated by an ERP implementation in a European multi-national company.

Det visar en studie utförd av forskargruppen Lusax vid Lunds universitet. Studien visar också att den svårtolkade lagstiftningen är ett hinder för bredare användning av videoövervakning.

- As an attitude characterized by frustration, hopelessness, betrayal and disillusionment (Andersson, 1996; Wanous et al. 1994) employee cynicism or organizational cynicism could be considered a specific attitude of interest to the research of information system (IS) implementations. Today a broad literature body has emerged within the IS research community investigating the organizational consequences of IS implementations breaking with the technical/rational tradition of the IS field. This article explores the relationship between employee cynicism and technological change and is based on a longitudinal case study of a Swedish customer service centre. The article reveals the challenges, criticism and cynicism among highly educated customer service centre employees going through a IS implementation process. We found two groups of users with distinct features: one group which had strong IS literacy yet expressed modest motivation and commitment towards work; another group which had strong work competence yet significant antipathy towards technological and organizational change. We conclude that cynicism represents an important but neglected aspect of IS implementation outcomes. More so, cynics may be important players in successfully implementing new IS.

- Understanding implications on firm performance from the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) is critical in order for firms to make rational decisions regarding business model configurations and investments in IoT. The transition between the current state and widespread adoption and diffusion of IoT is expected to be complex, and standardization is one of multiple barriers discussed in research regarding Internet of Things. In order to ensure interoperability between billions of heterogeneous devices, standardization may be a significant factor with potential impact on IoT investments. To expand our understanding of strategic implications of IoT investments, this paper analyzes the impact of IoT on business models and sources of value creation by applying a proposed framework to empirical illustrations. Further research is needed to support development of frameworks and to advance our understanding of how firms should act in order to meet challenges generated by the emergence of IoT.

- Information technology is a central phenomenon in modern society. It is widely used in a variety of settings and commercial firms use it for a variety of purposes. It could be an Internet application, a manufacturing system, office support software, electronic data interchange or something else, applied in order to create economic benefits through improvements of operative work tasks and business activities. But how do firms manage the IT investment? This thesis aims at increasing our understanding of how firms and managers act to create and employ strategic information technology resources, in order for the resources to become sources of competitive advantage. It is concerned in particular with so-called enterprise resource planning systems. Based on the resource-based view of strategic management, the thesis presents and analyses a particular IT project in a manufacturing company. The proposed framework offers an overview of the resource management process and its different phases, as well as a description of potential problems and solutions in conjunction with such processes. There are two overarching phases; the resource phase (including identification, development and protection of the resource) and the employment phase (including distribution and usage of the resource). Apart from a wide set of proposed problems and solutions associated with the different phases, three key properties of the process are addressed: Its cognitive component, the irreversibility of such projects in terms of finance, finance, cognition and culture, and the role of top management.

The Chinese Volvo : Sino-Foreign Joint Ventures and Perceived Performance

- This dissertation describes and analyzes the perceived performance of Sino-foreign joint ventures. The dissertation is based on an in-depth qualitative longitudinal real time case study of the joint venture known as Jinan Hua Wo Truck Corporation (Hua Wo), between Volvo Trucks and China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co. Ltd. in China. The purpose of the dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of Sino-foreign perceived performance by suggesting an elaborated model, which captures situated and dynamic features. Perceived performance is defined as the joint venture executives’ assessment of strategic goal achievement and overall satisfaction.Findings from the study of the Hua Wo joint venture indicate that what determines perceived performance is the outcome of activities initiated in order to achieve or to facilitate goals. The dissertation presents an analytical model of Sino-foreign joint venture perceived performance which comprises the four concepts: goals, stakeholder relations, political influence and control. The conclusion of the dissertation is that in order to understand what decides perceived performance, it is necessary to assess system size, in other words, the number of stakeholders able to influence goal achievement, and also the intended duration of the activities. It is proposed that the configuration of the suggested model of perceived performance will be dependent upon these two dimensions. For activities taking place in a restricted system over a restricted time period, perceived performance depends primarily on the goals of the activity. The perceived performance of activities of a restricted system carried out over an extended period of time is more influenced by control. On the other hand activities carried out in an extended system over a restricted period of time are mainly determined by stakeholder relations for perceived performance, whereas activities which take place in an extended system for an extended time period are vulnerable to political influence.
