  • Mellan privilegium och sårbarhet: Fluktuerande känsloekonomier i Negar Nasehs ”De fördrivna”
  • 2020
  • In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - 1104-0556. ; 50:2-3, s. 12-25
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How does it feel to be a part of today’s Swedish post-welfare society, where many people’s situation is utterly privileged yet at the same time emotionally precarious, and how are these conflicting experiences treated in contemporary fiction? The questions are in this article processed through Negar Naseh’s novel ”De fördrivna” (2017), with particular focus on interrelations between gender, affect, and agency. The novel revolves around the upper middle-class couple Miriam and Filip, who together with their baby girl have left Stockholm for a villa in the Sicilian countryside – secluded, yet not far from the Mediterranean stream of refugees. The article pays special attention to Miriam’s “change” in the story, from an initial distancing, to a burning commitment to the problem of migration. Based on Sianne Ngai's concept ”ugly feelings” and Sven Anders Johansson’s thoughts on today’s ”cynical condition”, different possible interpretations of Miriam’s “transition” and the novel’s brutal ending is discussed.

  • ”The Miss Austen of Sweden”. Om Fredrika Bremer i 1840-talets USA och litteraturhistorisk omvärdering
  • 2018
  • In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - 1104-0556. ; :1-2, s. 18-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How did Fredrika Bremer’s (1801–1865) depictions of Scandinavian family life become so immensely popular in the United States in the 1840s, and what did this transatlantic success have to do with gender, translation, media history, and nation building? In an attempt to trace the prerequisites for the intense yet rather short lived American “Bremer-mania”, this article focuses on the period 1842 to 1844 – a task greatly facilitated by the last decades’ substantial digitizing of book collections and historical press material. The investigation shows that Bremer’s breakthrough occurred at very specific situation in American social-, cultural-, and media history, and that her novels filled certain needs in the ongoing postcolonial struggle to foil British cultural hegemony. In this process, Bremer’s depictions of young women fighting for freedom offered a transfer identity, a position that for obvious reasons was provisional and temporary. As publishers started to invest in local writers, the boom for Scandinavian fiction soon decreased, and has left few traces in the history of 19th century American novel. Fredrika Bremer’s American career is yet another example of how translated literature and international dissemination is inadequately reflected in national literary historiography. However, considering the last decades’ growing focus on transcultural dissemination, it is eligible that future research pays more attention to the diversity of literary flows and circulations.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ”My heart was with Malin”: Mediation and Transformation in Fredrika Bremer’s The Neighbours. This article focuses on a scene in Fredrika Bremer’s 1837 novel, Grannarne (Th e Neighbours), investigating the relationship between reading aloud and empathy established in this work. It discusses the characters’ varied responses to the shared reading experience, utilising reception theory. In a follow-up discussion, I examine the feasibility of using newer theories concerning narrative empathy. Fritz Breithaupt’s theory is of particular interest since he suggests that second-level observation (and thus placing oneself in another person’s perspective) is central to the experience of empathy. Finally, I consider the emotional responses of the characters in relation to melodrama in Bremer’s work.
