  • Scarcity mindset among schoolteachers: how resource scarcity negatively impacts teachers' cognition and behaviors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: FRONTIERS IN PSYCHOLOGY. - 1664-1078. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recent line of research investigates the negative cognitive effects - known as the scarcity mindset - that arise when people face a lack of resources. We expand on this research and show that these cognitive effects are present among Swedish schoolteachers facing a scarcity of time and social resources at work. From an initial interview study we developed novel survey scales to measure teachers' subjective assessments of available resources and the extent of their scarcity mindset. We then related resource scarcity of time and social resources to the scarcity mindset using structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis in a survey study with a sample of Swedish schoolteachers. This research provides valuable insights for addressing resource constrained work environments in schools and contributes to the broader psychological research on cognitive effects resulting from resource scarcity.

  • Markers of imminent myocardial infarction
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Cardiovascular Research. - : Springer Nature. - 2731-0590.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Myocardial infarction is a leading cause of death globally but is notoriously difficult to predict. We aimed to identify biomarkers of an imminent first myocardial infarction and design relevant prediction models. Here, we constructed a new case–cohort consortium of 2,018 persons without prior cardiovascular disease from six European cohorts, among whom 420 developed a first myocardial infarction within 6 months after the baseline blood draw. We analyzed 817 proteins and 1,025 metabolites in biobanked blood and 16 clinical variables. Forty-eight proteins, 43 metabolites, age, sex and systolic blood pressure were associated with the risk of an imminent first myocardial infarction. Brain natriuretic peptide was most consistently associated with the risk of imminent myocardial infarction. Using clinically readily available variables, we devised a prediction model for an imminent first myocardial infarction for clinical use in the general population, with good discriminatory performance and potential for motivating primary prevention efforts.

  • The Electrochemical Commercial Vehicle (ECCV) Platform
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 17:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several technological challenges delay the adoption of electrified powertrains in the heavy-duty transport sector. For fuel-cell hybrid electric trucks, key issues include slow cold start, reduced cooling power during high ambient temperatures, and uncertainties regarding durability. In addition, the engineers must handle the complexity of the system. In this article, a Matlab/Simulink library is introduced, which has been developed to aid engineers in the design and optimization of energy management systems and strategies of this complex system that consider mechanical, electrochemical, and thermal energy flows. The library is introduced through five example vehicle models, and through case studies that highlight the various kinds of analysis that can be performed using the provided models. All library code is open source, open for commercial use, and runs in Matlab/Simulink without any need for external libraries.

  • Pro-environmental behaviour is undermined by disgust sensitivity: The case of excessive laundering
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - 1932-6203 .- 1932-6203. ; 19:6 June
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of laundry washed by European consumers has grown excessively for reasons that cannot be explained by demographics alone. Initiatives trying to curb this trend have repeatedly failed. Previous studies have largely overlooked the psychological dimensions of laundering behaviour. In three separate studies we investigate how disgust, shame, cleanliness norms and environmental identity, mediated through a set of preceding behaviours, affect washing frequency. Our results highlight how conflicting psychological goals between disgust sensitivity and pro-environmental identity can undermine willingness to change laundry behaviour. Policy recommendations are suggested, and future research challenges are discussed.

  • Impact of fine-needle aspiration cytology in thyroidectomy extent and associated surgical morbidity in thyroid cancer
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Langenbeck's archives of surgery (Print). - : Springer. - 1435-2443 .- 1435-2451. ; 409:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To assess the impact of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the extent of surgery in patients with thyroid cancer (TC) and the associated surgical morbidity in primary and completion setting.METHODS: A Swedish nationwide cohort of patients having surgery for TC (n = 2519) from the Scandinavian Quality Register for Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal surgery between 2004 and 2013 was obtained. Data was validated through scrutinizing FNAC and histology reports.RESULTS: Among the 2519 cases operated for TC, the diagnosis was substantiated and validated through the histology report in 2332 cases (92.6%). Among these, 1679 patients (72%) were female, and the median age at TC diagnosis was 52.3 years (range 18-94.6). Less than total thyroidectomy (LTT) was undertaken in 944 whereas total thyroidectomy (TT) in 1388 cases. The intermediate FNAC categories of atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/ FLUS), as well as suspicion for follicular neoplasm (SFN) lesions were more often encountered in LTT (n = 314, 33.3%) than TT (n = 63, 4.6%), whereas FNACs suspicion for malignancy and/or malignancy were overrepresented in TT (n = 963, 69.4%). Completion thyroidectomies were undertaken in 553 patients out of 944 that initially had LTT. In 201 cases with cancer lesions > 1 cm, other than FTC (Follicular TC)/ HTC (Hürthle cell TC) subjected to primary LTT, inadequate procedures were undertaken in 81 due to absent, Bethesda I or II FNAC categories, preoperatively. Complications at completion of surgery in this particular setting were 0.5% for RLN palsy (n = 1) and 1% (n = 2) for hypoparathyroidism 6 months postoperatively. The overall postoperative complication rate was higher in primary TT vs. LTT for RLN palsy (4.8% [n = 67] vs. 2.4% [n = 23]; p = 0.003) and permanent hypoparathyroidism (6.8% [n = 95] vs. 0.8% [n = 8]; p < 0.0001).CONCLUSIONS: FNAC results appear to affect surgical planning in TC as intermediate FNAC categories lead more often to LTT. Overall, inadequate procedures necessitating completion surgery are encountered in up to 15% of TC patients subjected to LTT due to absent, inconclusive, or misleading FNAC, preoperatively. However, completion of thyroidectomy in this setting did not yield significant surgical morbidity. Primary LTT is a safer primary approach compared to TT in respect of RLN palsy and permanent hypoparathyroidism complication rates; therefore, primary TT should probably be reserved for lesions > 1 cm or even larger with suspicion for malignancy or malignant FNAC.

  • Geometric control of diffusing elements on InAs semiconductor surfaces via metal contacts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local geometric control of basic synthesis parameters, such as elemental composition, is important for bottom-up synthesis and top-down device definition on-chip but remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose to use lithographically defined metal stacks for regulating the surface concentrations of freely diffusing synthesis elements on compound semiconductors. This is demonstrated by geometric control of Indium droplet formation on Indium Arsenide surfaces, an important consequence of incongruent evaporation. Lithographic defined Aluminium/Palladium metal patterns induce well-defined droplet-free zones during annealing up to 600 °C, while the metal patterns retain their lateral geometry. Compositional and structural analysis is performed, as well as theoretical modelling. The Pd acts as a sink for free In atoms, lowering their surface concentration locally and inhibiting droplet formation. Al acts as a diffusion barrier altering Pd’s efficiency. The behaviour depends only on a few basic assumptions and should be applicable to lithography-epitaxial manufacturing processes of compound semiconductors in general.

  • Association between attending cultural events and all-cause mortality : a longitudinal study with three measurements (1982-2017)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 13:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between cultural attendance and all-cause mortality.DESIGN: A longitudinal cohort study over 36 years (1982-2017) with three 8-year interval measurements of exposure (1982/1983, 1990/1991 and 1998/1999) to cultural attendance and a follow-up period to 31 December 2017.Sweden.PARTICIPANTS: The study included 3311 randomly selected individuals from the Swedish population with complete data for all three measurements.PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: All-cause mortality during the study period in relation to level of cultural attendance. Cox regression models with time-varying covariates were used to estimate HRs adjusted for potential confounders.RESULTS: The HRs of cultural attendance in the lowest and middle levels compared with the highest level (reference; HR=1) were 1.63 (95% CI 1.34 to 2.00) and 1.25 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.51), respectively.CONCLUSION: Attending cultural events has a suggested gradient, the lesser cultural exposure the higher all-cause mortality during the follow-up.

  • A longitudinal study of the association between attending cultural events and coronary heart disease
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications Medicine. - : Springer Nature. - 2730-664X. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The experiences of art and music are an essential part of human life and this study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between cultural participation and coronary heart disease. Methods: This was a longitudinal study on a randomly selected representative adult cohort (n = 3296) of the Swedish population. The study period was over 36 years (1982-2017) with three separate eight-year interval measurements of cultural exposure (for example, visiting theatres and museums) starting in 1982/83. The outcome was coronary heart disease during the study period. Marginal structural Cox models with inverse probability weighting were used to account for time-varying weights of the exposure and potential confounders during the follow-up. The associations were also examined through a time-varying Cox proportional hazard regression model. Results: Cultural participation shows a graded association, the higher the exposure the lower the risk of coronary heart disease; the hazard ratio was 0.66 (95% confidence interval, 0.50 to 0.86) for coronary heart disease in participants with the highest level of cultural exposure compared with the lowest level. Conclusion: Although causality cannot be determined due to the remaining risk of residual confounding and bias, the use of marginal structural Cox models with inverse probability weighting strengthens the evidence for a potentially causal association with cardiovascular health, which warrants further studies. Johansson et al. examine the association between exposure to culture events and coronary heart disease (CHD) in an adult cohort of the Swedish population over a 36-year period. Cultural participation showed a graded association, with higher exposure associated with lower risk of CHD. Plain language summaryThis study examined whether people taking part in cultural activities, such as going to museums or theatres, were less likely to get coronary heart disease. The study included 3296 adults in Sweden over a period of 36 years. Information on cultural participation was collected by questionnaires on three occasions, eight-years apart. National healthcare data was used to identify cases of coronary heart disease. The main finding was that people who took part in more cultural activities were less likely to have coronary heart disease. This study suggests that taking part in cultural activities may be an important way to keep your heart healthy.

  • Mind the (reporting) gap—a scoping study comparing measured laundry decisions with self-reported laundry behaviour
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. - 1614-7502 .- 0948-3349. ; 28:9, s. 1211-1222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Many environmental assessments of consumer products and household services rely on self-reported data. Life cycle assessments of domestic laundering are no exception. However, potential discrepancies between self-reported behaviour and actual everyday decisions are seldom investigated due to practical challenges in collecting relevant data. This means that environmental impacts relying on such self-reported data are much more uncertain than previously acknowledged. Method: Laundering data was collected at the Chalmers’ HSB Living lab (CHSBLL), a combined multi-family house and research facility in Gothenburg. The collection was both done passively (through the washing machines) as well as actively (through surveys to the tenants). RFID-readers were also installed in the machines and a number of clothing items tagged, allowing for identification. The site-specific data was later supplemented with a large statistical representative study for domestic laundering of Swedish households. This unique data quality allowed the comparison of passively collected data with survey data from tenants in a real-life setup, while validating the results from a national perspective. Result and conclusions: The results suggest that consumers have trouble remembering personal choices regarding domestic laundering, meaning that self-reported data are more uncertain than previously thought. In general, the participants overestimated the amount of laundry they washed and underestimated their frequency of washing. Additionally, many participants showed an interest in changing to alternative wash programs although this change failed to materialize when they were presented with this option in real-life. The findings have potential consequences for environmental assessments and implicate those previous estimations underestimate emissions per kg laundry washed.

  • Time without PSA recurrence after radical prostatectomy as a predictor of future biochemical recurrence, metastatic disease and prostate cancer death : a prospective Scandinavian cohort study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 12:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Although surveillance after radical prostatectomy routinely includes repeated prostate specific antigen (PSA)-testing for many years, biochemical recurrence often occurs without further clinical progression. We therefore hypothesised that follow-up can be shortened for many patients without increasing the risk of prostate cancer death. We investigated the long-term probabilities of PSA recurrence, metastases and prostate cancer death in patients without biochemical recurrence five and 10 years after radical prostatectomy.Design: Prospective cohort study. Stratification by Gleason score (<= 3+4=7or >= 4+3=7), pathological tumour stage (pT2 or >= pT3) and negative or positive surgical margins.Setting: Between 1989 and 1998, 14 urological centres in Scandinavia randomised patients to the Scandinavian Prostate Cancer Group study number 4 (SPCG-4) trial.ParticipationAll 306 patients from the SPCG-4 trial who underwent radical prostatectomy within 1year from inclusion were eligible. Four patients were excluded due to surgery-related death (n=1) or salvage radiotherapy or hormonal treatment within 6weeks from surgery (n=3).Primary outcome measures: Cumulative incidences and absolute differences in metastatic disease and prostate cancer death. Results: We analysed 302 patients with complete follow-up during a median of 24 years. Median preoperative PSA was 9.8ng/mL and median age was 65 years. For patients without biochemical recurrence 5 years after radical prostatectomy the 20-year probability of biochemical recurrence was 25% among men with Gleason score <= 3+4=7and 57% among men with Gleason score >= 4+3=7; the probabilities for metastases were 0.8% and 17%; and for prostate cancer death 0.8% and 12%, respectively. The long-term probabilities were higher for pT >= 3versus pT2 and for positive versus negative surgical margins. Limitations include small size of the cohort. Conclusion: Many patients with favourable histopathology without biochemical recurrence 5years after radical prostatectomy could stop follow-up earlier than 10 years after radical prostatectomy.
